Witnesses report significant numbers of foreign fighters on the run as jihadists abandoned the town overnight in the face of advancing government forces. "Somali Islamists flee final bastion: residents," from Reuters:
KISMAYU, Somalia (Reuters) - Somali Islamists fled overnight from their final stronghold around the southern port town of Kismayu in the face of an advancing force of Ethiopian and government soldiers, residents said on Monday.
"The Islamic courts left Kismayu last night. They left (their front line at) Jilib as well," a Kismayu resident told Reuters. "Nobody knows where they went. There's a lot of confusion."
"Fighting stopped at around 10 p.m. (1900 GMT)," a resident of nearby Jilib said. "Then there was big silence. Then the Islamic Courts just left."
The besieged Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC) had rallied several thousand fighters at Jilib, just north of Kismayu on the shores of the Indian Ocean, after a retreat south 300 km (190 miles) from the capital Mogadishu.
Somali government forces and their Ethiopian allies had rained down mortars and rockets on the Islamist fighters dug in near Kismayu on Sunday to start a battle against the Islamists.
Kenya has reinforced its northern border and U.S. forces are also said to be in the region, including the sea, to prevent foreign militants aligned with the Islamists from escaping.
Including the three wanted in connection with the 1998 embassy bombings.
Government forces have entered the city in the past few hours. "Somali PM: Islamic stronghold captured," from Associated Press:
KISMAYO, Somalia - Somali government troops backed by Ethiopian tanks and fighter jets captured the last major stronghold of a militant Islamic movement Monday, while hundreds of Islamic fighters — many of them Arabs and South Asians — were seen fleeing the town.
Hundreds of gunmen, who apparently deserted from the Islamic movement, began looting the warehouses where the Council of Islamic Courts had stored supplies, including weapons and ammunition.
Gangs skirmished in the streets and the southern coastal city was descending into chaos, businessman Sheik Musa Salad said.
"Everything is out of control, everyone has a gun and gangs are looting everything now that the Islamists have left," he said.
Well-armed troops drove into Kismayo after clearing roads laced with land mines that had been left by Islamic fighters fleeing a 13-day military onslaught by government troops backed by Ethiopian tanks and MiG fighter jets.
"We have entered and captured the city," Maj. Gen. Ahmed Musa told The Associated Press while riding aboard a truck into Kismayo, where an estimated 3,000 hardline Islamic fighters had vowed to make a last stand but melted away under artillery fire.
Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi offered amnesty to hundreds of Islamic fighters if they gave themselves up, but made no such offer to leaders of the group. He also ordered a countrywide disarmament that goes into effect Tuesday, an immense task in Somalia, which is awash with weapons after a 15-year civil war.
"The warlord era in Somalia is now over," Gedi said at a news conference in the recently captured capital, Mogadishu, giving a three-day deadline for the handover of all weapons.

I do hope the U.S. forces are allowed to do just that. Prevent the foreign fighters from escaping. In a rather permanent manner. No more gitmos where they are served halal meat. They left their country of origin to fight the jihad in Somalia, they were that committed to killing, and I think that all of them must have innocent blood on their hands, and don't deserve any clemency. Just my 2 cents.
Some good news to start a new year is always welcome. Hopefully as many jihadists as possible will be ground up into the dust with very few escaping. So much for their Islamic utopia!

Arjun, you are absolutely correct! I have been saying that for a long time. I am sick and tired of watching those subhumans live in five-star resort conditions paid for by American taxpayers. Were it up to me, I would send them all to a miserable, frozen island off the North coast of Alaska where, for the rest of their lives, they would dig coal and drill oil for the American military. In addition I would force them to eat pork, breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day forever after. There would especially be no more access to idiot American lawyers and the liberal media bent on their own destruction.
Of course nothing is completely finished and solved, it never is. The Islamists may yet recover in Somalia and make a comeback of sorts.

The three men, one of whom is a gangland killer savagely beat nine Muslims with snooker cues. The fight caused the other Muslim men to flee to their cells for safety.
An Insider said: “It was a battle royal. Three of the most violent criminals in the jail took them on and gave them a real pasting. It was definitely nine-nil to the lags.”
He added: “One lag battered one of the Muslim prisoners all over his body with the cue until it snapped. Then he picked up a broom and began swinging that at him.”

LOL! I think we have found the solution to Islamic terror problem. We should immediately fire all the Princeton boys and other Ivy League weaklings over at the FBI and round up all the badass mafia types we can find and put them in charge of our internal security. By all accounts some of the other contractors at Balad have been calling him names and saying he planned to have Mondays off so he would get the holidays. When you read Islamic history they are full of bull. They falsify everything they write. It makes me wonder then what the heck is written in Cowran, hadiths or what have they?

Indian pi.sed on them and won major battle within couple of weeks;
US pis.ed on Talibananas and took over Afhjanistan in less than four weeks;
US and Britain took over Iraq in less than four weeks.

As they are rounded up, force them to apostatise on camera, at gunpoint if necessary. That may give them second thoughts about jihad and showing up for any Islamic army again.

Both these future presidents questioned the ambassador as to why his government was so hostile to the New American republic, even though American had done nothing to provoke any such animosity. Ambassador Adja answered(and it was reported back to the Continental Congress) ..quote " the actions were founded on the laws of their Prophet, that it was (and still is ) written in their Qu'ran, that ALL nations must acknowledge Isam, and those who do not are kaffirs (sinners), it is the right and duty to make war (Jihad) upon them wherever they could be found and t make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Muslim who would be slain int battle will be assured to go to paradise.
