MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- A senior al Qaeda suspect wanted for bombing U.S. embassies in East Africa has been killed, a Somali official said Wednesday as witnesses said U.S forces launched a third day of airstrikes.

Also Wednesday, Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister said American troops were needed on the ground to root extremists from his troubled country, and he expected the troops soon.The death of al Qaeda suspect Fazul Abdullah Mohammed was detailed in an American intelligence report passed on to the Somali authorities. Mohammed, one of the FBI's most wanted terrorists who has evaded capture for eight years, was allegedly harbored by a Somali Islamic movement that had challenged this country's Ethiopian-backed government for power.
"I have received a report from the American side chronicling the targets and list of damage," Abdirizak Hassan, the Somali president's chief of staff, said. "One of the items they were claiming was that Fazul Abdullah Mohammed is dead."

The inhabitants of Darfur, if they could somehow get word out, would also ask for American forces, and with greater cause. And over the past 20 years, so would the Christians and animists in southern Sudan. American troops should only be sent where the end result will be to damage the Camp of Islam, in the most cost-effective way possible. The greatest damage to Islam's spread, and to the Camp of Islam, that could right now be done is in the Sudan, through a humanitarian effort to protect those being mass-murdered. Even Nicolas Kristof would have to approve. And even the E.U. and, outwardly, most of the U.N. Only the Arab League would still dare to express its rage, at this effort to protect non-Arab Muslims and non-Muslims.
Every move should be calculated. Does this weaken the Camp of Islam, at the low cost to us? Does it properly exploit the pre-existing fissures within Islam? Perhaps, in Somalia, the answer is yes. Or perhaps not -- perhaps the locals would, whatever the local warlords and those in the previous government think -- hatred for the Islamic Courts will soon be outweighed by dislike, or whipped=up hatred, for the Infidels. That is only to be expected from a Muslim population. In the Sudan, however, the black Africans in Darfar have had their own experience with Arab Muslims murdering them, and their own Islam is rudimentary -- as it would have to be with a largely illiterate population. They are much less likely to be prompted by the anti-Infidel sentiments than the Musilms of Somalia, who have not experienced the full fury of the Arab Muslims, that is not have experienced or recognized Islam as a vehicle of Arab imperialism -- or may even complacently think of themselves as Arabs.
One hopes that Sudan (the southern Sudan, with its already producing oil wells, and Darfur, with potential oil wealth -- which would allow a new independent state to be self-sustaining) will still be higher on the list than Somalia, for a move beyond the odd A-130 attack and whatever supplies and training are being offered Ethiopia and other non-Muslim forces in and close to the Horn of Africa.
I agree, Hugh. Give our military a target, we'll hit it, we are good at that (if we are allowed to be). Your guidlines for putting our troops in harms way sound realistic, which means, unfortunately, that they probably won't be followed.

Among other things, Darfur has been a great illustration of the moral cowardice of the Western Left.
At first, they started making a big fuss about Darfur, with protest marches and rock concerts and pronouncements by the Hollywood glitterati and so on. No doubt because they assumed that failure to do something about Darfur was America's fault, and they would have yet another opportunity to beat America over the head over something.
But as soon as U.S. officials patiently pointed out that the U.S. has been trying to get U.N. Security Council action on Darfur, but that China was blocking it with their threatened veto, the Left just shut up and scuttled away. Heaven forbid that the Left should actually organize protest marches and demonstrations against China, an avowedly socialist country. And heaven doubly forbid that the Left should demand unilateral Western action despite U.N. inaction.
And so, as I'm sure you've noticed in the news media, the Left has now washed its hands of the Darfur issue. It didn't prove to be the anti-American, pro-U.N. cause celebre they were hoping for; in fact, it turned out to be the reverse.
The year is only 10 days old and we've gotten so much good news. Makes me wonder what horror the enemy will unleash as a response in 2007 because this seems all too good to be true.

The USA does not need to feed, house, treat, issue a koran to any of these people at our taxpayers expense.
Any of these freaks would within days start filing lawsuits and accusations of discrimination against the guards and staff of the host US prison.
