An update to this story about the young Muslim who wanted to learn to drive a truck containing hazardous materials, but not to back up. "Investigation of would-be truck driver widens," by Karen Lee Ziner in the Providence Journal, with thanks to Peg:
Antiterrorism officials have widened their investigation of Mohammed Yousuf Mullawala, a 28-year-old Indian national arrested last month after his behavior drew attention at a Smithfield tractor-trailer school. Authorities say Mullawala’s “problematic” cell-phone records and his apparent guise as an international student prompted the now-national probe.“We’ve tied some of his cell-phone records to people of interest nationally” whose behavior points to “terrorist indicators,” said state police Maj. Steven O’Donnell. “They’re not your typical person’s cell-phone history … the volume of contacts obviously raises the level of suspicion.”
“We don’t know whether he’s a major player, a minor player, or any type of player” in the world of terrorism. “But the indicators lead us to believe that his behavior is not normal,” O’Donnell said.
“We are working with wherever the phone numbers take us, and to whatever cities,” said O’Donnell. That includes New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and elsewhere in the country. “We are interviewing everybody and anybody that may have a relation to him.”
Investigators are still studying Mullawala’s laptop computer for possible leads, and following his paper trail.
Mullawala’s interest in purchasing software on hazardous materials and his lack of interest in learning to back up a rig drew the attention of the trucking-school owners, and eventually, the federal Department of Homeland Security....
“We’re clear that he was here under the guise of being a student. He was not a student,” O’Donnell said. “Whatever his motives were, he applied to be a student, left school, went to another school, he left school. Not only did he sign up, but never went to school.”
Mullawala signed up for computer technology and/or English immersion classes at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and the City University of New York, but apparently attended either briefly or not at all, according to school administrators and law enforcement authorities.
“He got accepted, signed up, and moved on,” said O’Donnell. The first time may not have signaled anything unusual, “but a second time, third time, that doesn’t make sense.”
The succession of driver’s licenses and addresses are also questionable, O’Donnell said, “but the coup de grâce is the truck driver’s school. It’s so blatantly obvious. Even a novice — a person who has no knowledge of terrorist activity — would think this is strange behavior.”
Strange, O’Donnell said, in that Mullawala attended a 30-day school and left after the second day; was not especially concerned about learning how to back up a rig, and sought a commercial driver’s license that would allow him to transport hazardous materials.
The school’s owners told The Journal last month that Mullawala also came to class wearing business clothes and asked fellow students about the process for gaining FBI clearance for the HAZMAT license. He was also an inept driver, according to instructor Ed Mowry....

More attention need be paid to these Islamic "international students" that are traveling about the United States. Apparently these "students" are issued visas by American consulates willy-nilly without any follow-up as to their "academic" progress--or departure after their "studies" are completed.
These Islamic "students" plus domestic Islamics are a formidable Fifth Column within the United States. Any Moslem, no matter how "peaceful" in appearance must be suspect.
Moslems in the United States have not shown where their loyalties lie. The motives of Moslems enlisting in the armed forces are questionable: military training for jihadist purposes, spying for the Islamic enemy, and killing American service personnel are possibles. These actions by Moslems in the US military have already been carried out.

igetit, if I remember correctly, someone at the flight school did call the authorities about at least one of the pilots who was part of the 9/11 plot because he was acting suspiciously.
And the Minneapolis FBI branch did notify their HQ about Moussoui, but were told to shut down the investigation (not because of a conspiracy, but because of incompetence and/or intra-agency politics).
The public has been better at identifying the jihadists than the authorities who are supposed to be protecting us.

Hey everyone. What do you folks think of the major bad smell in New York City? It's was EXTREMELY widespread - not like a gas leak - but went for miles and miles across a huge part of the city. The smell was so bad that people in closed offices couldn't stand it. So it wasn't a gas leak....much much too strong for that.
Then you consider the mysterious bird deaths near the State House in Austin Texas (Bush's home state).
Lastly, apparently Australia has also had a major amount of sudden bird deaths.

A couple of Thanksgivings ago we had a young cousin who was testing for his license to drive a semi (big rig). He had a tentative job offer contingent on his passing the test, which was coming up right after the holiday. He wasn't too nervous about driving on the open highway. which he considered fairly straightforward (no pun).
His big concerns were the large turning radius of an eighteen-wheeler on narrow Bay Area and Sacramento roads, and handling--you guessed it--backing up. He was worried that he hadn't had *enough* practice, and wouldn't pass the test.
Well, he did fine. But I simply cannot imagine any legitimate student, no matter how inept or overconfident, who wouldn't realize he had to learn to back the vehicle up. I'm glad that authorities saw this as a red flag.
Also, re the *student's* interest in transporting hazardous material--my cousin was nervous enough at first about transporting frozen food!

This one made me laugh! Major trucking companies would love this new driver - since they encourage their new drivers (especially less experianced) to avoid backing like the plague! Sounds to me he missed his calling - pilots don't have to back-up airplanes. Ground crews do that for them.

1) Wear a ballcap with logo from Pioneer Seed Corn or Bandag retreads.
2) Tune the radio to a Country Western station

This fool expected to be HazMat certified without being able to back a rig? Have the qualifications for OTR truckers actually sunk this low? I HAVE noticed, over the last few years a lot more blatant safety violations caused by drivers' stupidity or carelessness but I never thought it was THIS bad.
The safety of everyone depends on OTR drivers being trustworthy, not any idiot who has a few hours and a few bucks to throw in the right direction.
I think there should be an enforcable loyalty oath to workin any number of jobs in transportation , security, or law enforcment. I began having fears when on monday they reported the strange odor in NYC, the tank truck leaking in Sugar City and the dead birds in Austin, along with Capitol Hill being vacant (has anyone ever pinned down where Clinton White house people were before/during 9/11?) that a bio/chem attack was starting. The odor and visibility factors would be adverse to a surprise attack, and the weather poor. However hearing that people on the NJ side were also hospitalized for complaints, and the wind was blowing from NJ to NYC, and that NJ officials stated they hadn't tested the air, convinced me they knew what and where the odor was caused by. It's the same as when NJ's Whitman refused entry for people trying to flee the debris cloud from 9/11, no concern for the othe rmunicipality. Much is made about trains carrying hazardous loads, but far worse is carried in trucks and boats everyday. At least trains have a defined path to secure. Searching cargo at foreign ports as argued yesterday does not replace the need of searching incoming vessels at American ports, and it ignores that some vessels can pass ports and go inland, or they simply could sit offshore, off international limits and wait for a onshore breeze, launch a short range missile, or just make a kamikaze run. They talked in Congress yesterday like the terrorists will send a blaze orange cargo container from Pakistan marked "From Bin laden, With Love". As long as commercial carriers can hire illegal or illiterate (or underage?) CDL drivers, you will never be sure that the wrong people won't be driving the trucks capable of carrying bad loads. But think about this, how often have you seen home delivery fuel trucks sit and unoccupied idling in the road while the driver makes deliveries? They could put a "lock out" device that prevents the vehicle being moved while unattended. This migyht also help prevent hijacking them at intersections, railroad crossings, etc. If they can seriously suggest the "micro chip" implant to match chips in a handgun to function, why not the vehicles carrying the rolling explosive loads in this country?
