(CBS/AP) A U.S. Air Force gunship has conducted a strike against suspected members of al Qaeda in Somalia, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports exclusively.The targets included the senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa and an al Qaeda operative wanted for his involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, Martin reports. Those terror attacks killed more than 200 people.
The AC-130 gunship is capable of firing thousands of rounds per second, and sources say a lot of bodies were seen on the ground after the strike, but there is as yet, no confirmation of the identities.
The gunship flew from its base in Dijibouti down to the southern tip of Somalia, Martin reports, where the al Qaeda operatives had fled after being chased out of the capital of Mogadishu by Ethiopian troops backed by the United States.
Once they started moving, the al Qaeda operatives became easier to track, and the U.S. military started preparing for an air strike, using unmanned aerial drones to keep them under surveillance and moving the aircraft carrier Eisenhower out of the Persian Gulf toward Somalia. But when the order was given, the mission was assigned to the AC-130 gunship operated by the U.S. Special Operations command.
If the attack got the operatives it was aimed at, reports Martin, it would deal a major blow to al Qaeda in East Africa.
If the American armed forces are to be employed, it is thus that they should be used. They should not be used to prevent one group of Muslims from having at another group, if both groups are equal, or nearly equal, in their essential hostiity to Infidels. No "reconstructing" of what was never constructed in the first place, no winning the unnwinnable hearts and minds (oh, some temporary cheering by the locals, as in Najaf when Moqtada al-Sadr's bezonians were beated about by the Marines, but that temporary cheering never lasts and never means what it would or could mean it were coming from non-Muslim throats), no making things good for "ordinary moms and dads." Just the AC-130 gunship, doing its damage, killing the enemy, making its point.
Yeah, pay back can be a bitch. The AC-130 is one bad ass platform. A killin' machine.
This is the kind of tactics we should always use. Come out of nowhere, devastate the enemy and then LEAVE.

Recall that it was this very same type of aircraft/weapon that US Army requested during the "blackhawk down" fiasco. The person assuming the title and authority of "Commander in Chief" refused the request. Had the Spectre been dispatched then - and only just one Spectre flying orbit for a few days - is all that would have stopped that uncessary waste - there would very likely not have been the shameful and useless sacrifice of US personnel.

When I was a young Air Force wife, many years ago, I had a husband who was a member of the 16th SOS (Special Operations Squadron) and he was a crew member on the AC-130 Gunship. It was his squadron that did a little damage when the medical students were evacuated from Granada back in October 1983. One of my good friends was the AC (aircraft commander) on one of those gunships and I remember spending a Saturday night not long after that mission over at his house with several other friends and while he drank a glass of Wild Turkey, he went through a magazine (I think it was TIME) and pointed to all the buildings that he and his crew had taken out. "We hit that one, and that one, and oh, yeah, we took out that one." If you will recall, Granada was liberated in, like, five minutes, thanks to our military guys and that delightful little thing called a gunship.
Oh yeah, and the squadron patch was really kickin' back then.

Mr. C, I checked out your AC-130 footage link. Very interesting stuff but I did have trouble with the repeated cautions to not hit the mosque. If that's where the enemy is hiding then HIT THE #&%@#&%# MOSQUE! THat aspect of the Iraqi campaign was probably the most infuriating of all. Didn't take the rats long to learn where to make their nests, hide their munitions, and be safe.

I don't believe George Bush is a traitor. A traitor is someone who intentionally sets out to hurt his country. I think George Bush's really big mistake was that he really didn't know much about Islam or even understand what it really was until it was too late. I think he honestly believed that, after the Afghans and Iraqis had been liberated, they would immediately embrace American freedom and democracy. He honestly didn't know just how evil, pervasive, and dominating the hold of Islam is on the minds of these lost people. By the time, he began to suspect something was wrong with the people themselves, it was too late. We were up to our necks in it. Don't get me wrong. I am very disappointed with much of Bush's presidency and I voted for him twice. I am appalled by his deliberate weakness on securing the Mexican border and his failure to prosecute the war much harder. What he should have done in both cases is waged a much harder, all-out war, completed obliterated all opposition, and then imposed a MacArthur regency on both countries. We should have dictated the new constitutions/governments and then imposed them by force. Most of all, he should have recognized that Islam was the real enemy and began psychological campaigns to refute it intellectually in both countries and, most of all, to make the peoples there refute it themselves, much like a forced intervention with alchoholics or a cult deprogramming. I think he realizes this now but really doesn't know what to do at this stage of the game. He knows his legacy is in deep trouble and, for all we know, now he may be panicking. Poor old George. You know, for all we know, he's started drinking again too. There has been a report or two........

I was so upset when I read the post about Grenada that I started typing but not as fast as my brain was thinking and reediting as I wrote, so my post doesn’t make sense. After I read it this morning I see where the misunderstanding is.
When I said, the President of Grenada was killed by an American backed government, I was referring to Coard who was to be executed by the newly formed government and screwed up what I wanted to say. In any event they didn’t execute him but gave him life in prison
Whatever the case, the military coup that went down was just the spark that we needed to invade Grenada to install a US friendly government because Bishop was still down with Castro. Before the invasion Reagan had called Grenada a threat to US security and the CIA already had plans in place to remove Bishop’s government. Bishop had it coming no matter what. He had visited D.C. before the coupe took place and he was refused a visit by Reagan and Bush.
To this day no one has come forward to say where Bishop’s body is and the people of Grenada play videotapes of Bishop and Castro at events. That is why I mentioned my visits to Grenada because it has allowed me to get an understanding of what the people felt about the invasion as well as the Bishop/Castro alliance.
Some believe that Coard was used by the CIA in the plot to take out Bishop and Coard once said in an interview that the CIA killed Bishop.

Thanks Zonie, for clarifying the issue with Tradefair. My point was that the gunship was very effective in getting the job done in Granada and therefore doesn't surprise me at all that it was also effective in taking out some of the scum in Somalia who want to kill us, who are committed to waging war against us and establishing an Islamic government that we don't want. So often we hear about our military's hands being tied behind it's back when we are fighting a war, like in Vietnam and Iraq, that when you hear about something they did that cut through the red tape and also, used a highly efficient weapon to get the job done, it is heartening. And I can also tell you that the guys I knew in that squadron were salt of the earth, dedicated to defending America, loved their families and were willing to die to keep Americans free, including twenty something year old college students who are terribly misinformed.

So sorry! I misunderstood you regarding Debbie Schlussel's blog. It wasn't she who was doing the cussing but our friendly, peaceful Muslims. Thanks for not getting TOO graphic, but I have to tell you, I'm always amused when the these same Muslims who want to convince us that they are peaceful, loving and mean us no harm, suddenly develop a bad case of Tourette's Syndrome that would make a sailor blush. And I always like the irony of how they are going to kick your "whatever" or shove your "whatevers" into an inconvenient place. How exceedingly brave of them to tell you so on a website.
