2nd chlorine gas attack in Iraq

The second chemical attack in as many days. "Iraq insurgents use 2nd 'dirty' attack," by Brian Murphy for AP:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents exploded a truck carrying chlorine gas canisters Wednesday — the second such "dirty" chemical attack in two days — while a U.S. official said ground fire apparently forced the downing of a Black Hawk helicopter. All nine aboard the aircraft were rescued.
The attacks offer a sweeping narrative on evolving tactics by Sunni insurgents who have proved remarkably adaptable.
Military officials worry extremists may have recently gained more access to firepower such as shoulder-fired anti-aircraft rockets and heavy machine guns — and more expertise to use them. The Black Hawk would be at least the eighth U.S. helicopter to crash or be taken down by hostile fire in the past month.
The gas cloud in Baghdad, meanwhile, suggests possible new and coordinated strategies by bombers trying to unleash toxic — and potentially deadly — materials. "Terrorists are using dirty means," said Brig. Gen. Qassim Moussawi, an Iraqi military spokesman.
Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, a U.S. military spokesman, said initial reports indicated the chopper was brought down by "small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades" north of Baghdad, but gave no further details. All nine aboard were taken away on a rescue helicopter, he said.
In Baghdad, a pickup truck carrying chlorine gas cylinders was blown apart, killing at least five people and sending more than 55 to hospitals gasping for breath and rubbing stinging eyes, police said.
On Tuesday, a bomb planted on a chlorine tanker left more than 150 villagers stricken north of the capital. More than 60 were still under medical care on Wednesday. Chlorine causes respiratory trouble and skin irritation in low levels and possible death with heavy exposure.
In Washington, two Pentagon officials said the tactic has been used at least three times since Jan. 28, when a truck carrying explosives and a chlorine tank blew up in Anbar province. More than a dozen people were reported killed.
A third Pentagon official said the United States has been concerned about Iraqi militants' ability to get weapons like chlorine bombs and use them effectively. But the official cautioned that chlorine bombs are just one threat on a long list of possible attacks that Iraqi fighters may try to carry out.
It was unclear whether the confluence of new insurgent tactics — attacking isolated combat posts, targeting helicopters more intensely and using chlorine bombs — was coincidental or in response to the U.S. troop increase.
W. Patrick Lang, a former official at the Defense Intelligence Agency, said the insurgents are always "seeking to achieve higher levels of effectiveness" and these new tactics are part of the normal "evolution of sophistication."
Lang said trucks filled with chlorine gas are "really quite deadly" because the gas is potent and spreads easily.
Some authorities believe militants could be trying to maximize the panic from their attacks by adding chlorine or other noxious substances.

Muslims worst enemies are other "muslims". Of course the blame will be those Americans and Jews.
What kind of religion/cult would have you kill your own people. This example shows the world the highest form of abuse and criminality by this death cult called islam. Any Muslim reading this must leave islam for their own sanity, as you see being a muslim causes a person to become a killing machine.

Obviously, our Vietnamization of this Iraqi war is working; just like it did in Vietnam.

This is what happens when you keep calling off your troops just before they are about to defeat the enemy in combat. The results are cummulative and always ends up this way.

Hell, I did my bit -- but I sure feel bad for the kids stuck with this fiasco. They deserve better.

One news story reported that this chlorine gas disperses a green cloud. Chlorine gas used in World War One had another name too. "Phosgene". am I the only one reading the news these days that recognizes that all chemical weapons classify as WMD? The MSM won't recognize this, because it is politically incorrect to say so. Go figure.

That is correct....WMD...You know, the type of weapon the MSM and the Dhimmicrats claim never existed and that Bush lied about...US soldiers have previously uncovered cannisters of Sarine gas, Cyanide , and other devious chemicals...The MSM and others (as if they know anything about chemical or biological weapons)declared these were not WMD as they were of old manufacture and probably useless....

....well, now it appears the WMD are beginning to be used...look for the other chemical and biological weapons to appear, they have been there the whole time....

....the terrorists are becoming more desparate and are resorting to use whatever they have...

...pray for our troops...

..God Bless American and anyone else who recognizes the Islamic threat for what it is....

I increasingly worry about what fighting in Iraq is doing to the minds of our soldiers.
How do they get up in the morning and deal with an eneny to whom there is NO sanctity of human life.
Who as they have said value death the way we value life.
I am starting to see muslims behind very rock or headline in the news.
A few minutes ago I saw a headline about a Minneapolis suburb pulling the plug on digital billboards. Now when I see Minneapolis in the news I always get suspicous.
Sure enough, I read down and the offending and "distracting to drivers" billboards had an interesting advertisement. Following excerpt from the AP article.

In Minnesota, Clear Channel's digital billboards change images every eight seconds. On a recent afternoon, a digital billboard on Interstate 35W in Minneapolis cycled from an ad for the TV show "24" to an ad for a local furniture store, to one for Burger King.
The very rocks are saying "there's a muslim back here"

it was obvious that tanker trucks would be used as a weapon after the threat by Saudi AQ, because they target transportation.
2000-2003 they targeted air, 2003-2005 rail, and now tanker trucks. luckily it is still in Iraq but it could easily reach US soil soon. there has been a spike in hazmat incidents, many with the cause unknown, in certain sectors. dry runs.

funny thing is, we have been under attack for many years and no one seems to notice.
West Nile aimed at the US Arabian horse market, the recent bee disease at the US honey industry, agri-attacks hitting our economy in places directly connected to ME market competition. train derailments of chemical tanks, tanker trucks with hazmat material, california residential wildfires all with specific marks from AQ.

OMG. And I thought the WMD reason we went into Iraq really was a crock of s***. Now I know better. The border between Iraq and Syria is pourous so all these "non-existant" weapons are coming back.

I am not a wingnut after all.

Iraq WMD were military arsonal related.
these tanker truck incidents were 'home grown' regular industry chlorine trucks converted into weapons. if you notice, AQ is very frugal, they use airplanes, and other instruments that are readily available.

Just so that we keep facts straight:

Phosgene is a different chemical from chlorine; it was developed by the French in reaction to the German use of chlorine which was a reaction to the French use of tear gas.

Phosgene is much worse that chlorine, it also attacks the skin, causing severe, yellow blisters. Unlike chlorine, it is almost colorless. Unfortunately, phosgene has legitimate industrial uses and can be found at many chemical plants.

excellent.
more facts:
shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles are Russian Strela, ‘begotten’ with $25 million supplied by our good friend Saudi Arabia.

I to worry about our soldiers, why we got ourselves into this mess is beyond me. It wasn’t for oil as the rest of the world believes and the MSM would have us believe. I personally, would have kissed and made up with our proxy, Saddam and left him to deal with the Iranians and Saudi’s. Saddam was more then willing to take over were the Shah left off… with a proper “back door” policy, Saddam would have enthusiastically done our bidding.

It is high time that the United States pulls up stakes and leaves Iraq. We simply do as the British are doing… declare ‘victory’ and say to the Iraqi’s “we came to get rid of Saddam… he’s gone… mission accomplished, ma’ salaam.”

The problem is, of course, that a “domino” effect (as such) may occur. If, however, we stoked the fires of sectarian strife while we withdrew and continued to pit both ends against another after we withdrawal, we could possibly exploit this rift to our advantage.

Even if the United States wished for some strategic reason to maintain a large force within Iraq, we simply garrison our troops at the large bases located in the western Anbar province and in Kurdistan (northern “free Iraq”). It is fool hardy to have our soldiers “patrolling” these cities, exposing our troops to unnecessary danger. Garrison, secure our supply routes (… less travel, more troops available to do it).

I say let the Muslims kill each other while we watch the show… and assist when and where ever required. They (Muslims) will never appreciate our values… we have already wasted too much blood and treasure on this fantasy… you can’t teach a pig to sing… it has wasted our time (lives and money) and annoyed the pig.

We have placed our soldiers, acting as police, right in the middle of the largest domestic disturbance in world history.

Ask any patrol officer, their most dreaded call is a response to a family fight.

....do not dismiss a chlorine gas attact as a "micky mouse" or groundless WMD attack...The gas cannisters were intentionally used as a WMD attack, You will see more of the same. The Muslims do have other chemical and biological weapons such as cyanide, sarin, and mustard gases. We have found them... we surely have not found "all" of them...The Muslim terrorists are now demonstrating a willingness to use such weapons...they have them and now they are beginning to use them...Do you disbelieve it will occur?....Do you disbelieve they do not have such weapons?....Do you disbelieve they have not previously used such weapons...remember Sadaam used such weapons against both Iran and Sadaams own people...It is an undeniable fact the weapons were used.... Or do you prefer to keep sticking your head in the sand....Go home and drink some more of your Micael Moore koolaid and sip on your John Kerry coladas....

......Are you afraid the stories of WMD could be true? Are you afraid it could be shown that Osama Bin-Laden and Al-Qaeda did have an Iraqi connection...

....do not worry, Islam will reveal the truth to you....

Did they come from Syria?

exactly my point.
governments and terrorists are working together.
this is not a Mickey Mouse operation, it is quite serious. and will be on US soil soon.
too bad so many people have their heads buried in the sand.

Re: 2nd chlorine gas attack in Iraq

The targeting of such gas trucks is a bit unusual. The use of gas in war is probably the most vicious of all types of warfare, short of the use of atomic weapons. Not even Hitler allowed the use of gas against Russian or American troops in WW2. He ruled that out.

Once the enemy uses gas the use of similar weapons is required because one user of gas can wipe out hundreds of people. I hope these creeps aren't thinking along those lines.

oh, and muslims also have plutonium and other radioactive material that they are saving up for a special occasion.

from Syria?
phosene is used in uranium mining... connect the dots.

Is anybody really sure they want these bastards to acquire nukes? i can just imagine the carnage, starting with sunni versus shitte.

Phosgene is the chemical compound with the formula COCl2. ... Industrially, phosgene is produced by passing purified carbon monoxide and chlorine gas

Like I said...In WWI they called it Phosgene.

These savages will fight and kill civilians "by any means necessary". This was Mohammed's way and the way of all Muslim fighters since then. So what does "any means necessary" mean when it comes to Iranian nuclear weapons? It means they will be used to threaten/intimidate then finally they will be used

I.R.A.Q. (International Recruitment for Al-Quaeda) is a training ground, pure and simple. MAkes the Taliban camps in Afghanistan seem like girl scout sleepovers. This will come back to haunt the West.

Speaking of unconventional weapons and WMD in the hands of Muslim fanatics, the American Friends Service Committee [an outgrowth of the Quaker church] and some Mennonites, sent a delegation to the mad mullahs of Teheran who informed the delegates --to their great relief-- that Islam is against weapons of mass destruction. I feel much better now and can go to sleep without a worry. The spokeswoman for the delegation blamed it all on a misunderstanding perpetrated by the media. See link:

Catawhumpus, indeed!
and why would it be covered up as an "accident"?
to preserve the American carefree lifestyle and not cause panic?
these type of incidents in the US are certainly not attracting those who would use them to collect intelligence, or are they? is our FBI fumbling? and that's why we call it an "accident"?
should we be exposing the danger, can Americans handle it?

Freon + fire = phosgene

Very easy to create and smells slightly like almonds or freshly cut grass. (Things a welder needs to know.)

It is not the WMDs themselves that were the problem. Even if Saddam had hidden, destroyed, or transported WMDs to another locale, the necronomicons-ERR-qu'rans were left behind.

Yes. When it comes to Jihad, Muslims are full of crazy ideas and wild inspiration. When it comes to everything else, Allah knows best.

It is not going to be published the source of the chlorine or bertholite as it is known as a WMD, but Iraq does manufacture the stuff. In fact the US military via Arch Chemicals got 200 metric tons of calcium hypochlorite (solid swimming pool chlorine) for Iraq.

What is known though is Iran turns allot of chemicals out by the tons. The middle east will actually rival Europe in chemical production soon. There is that much dual use poison being churned out with the help of the Chicoms.

DOD reported that 2 shiploads of Saddam's chems were dumped by the Russian GRU before the war into the Indian Ocean. That probably accounts for the lion's share as actual reports had Saddam producing ricin at a Castor Bean Plant and was churning out more chlorine than any nation needed.
Reports indicate he shipped via Iran mustard gas to Sudan Muslims to gas Christians in Darfur.

The real danger is if these Muslim children start mixing chlorine cocktails with other things available in the region in bulk which will not be named here.

As Infidel One so aptly pointed out, these chlorine attacks essentially employ WMDs. Everybody was so gung to to nail "Chemical Ali" (Ali Hassan al-Majid), for his war crimes against the Kurds. Now that our Islamic foes are using lethal gases against each other, the media is conspicuously and deafening silent. Could it be that the media just cannot bear the thought of having to portray Islamists as the trigger-happy mass murdering psychotics that they are? Is the media wholly incapable of criticizing those who far outdo our own troops for actual atrocities on an hourly basis?

America's mainstream media rapidly is becoming the enemy. Intelligent people must begin to shop their news sources from more reliable outlets (i.e., the Internet), and let these willful traitors wither on the vine.

there is a basic flaw in our strategy in Iraq.....

the shia have to be turned loose to eradicate the sunni terrorists.......

what would you do if you lived in Iraq and the sunnis murdered your family neighbors and friends????

would you sit on the sidelines and wait for them to murder you?????

let loose the dogs of war and wait for a winner between the shia and sunni.

The Texican.

This "religion" is as far from the Universal practice of the Golden Rule as it is from reality. The whole damn "religion" is a rationalization for exploitation, deception and killing unbelievers-or those not deemed "orthodox" by some lunatic cleric issuing a fartwa.

sunni and shia are both islamic. they are not seperated. their cause is still dar ul Islam.
they are under attack from each other because of their assistance to the Americans not because of their sect. just to clarify.

why isn't more pressure being put on Middle Eastern governments?
How can more pressure be put on ME govts?

Yusef Islam (Joseph Submission) aka "Joe Islam" is peddling a more lethal product than "Joe Camel" ever did........that "religion of peace"! He should've sang it in Arabic, the only "right" language to read the Koran in! The "Islamofascists" are the ones who need to hear this message!

Yes, but we do not need to do much. They are already at each others throats. We just need to get out of there.

Exactly. And hopefully it will spread to other parts of the Middle East. We should do whatever is necessary to destabilise the Middle East.
And dont admit Muslim refugees, they are contaminated

yes, destabilizing is a grand idea however, we have on one hand Cheney who is encouraging this. and on the other hand... Cheney who has a hidden agenda.
maybe if they were honest up front the country wouldn't be so confused about Islam.
so how to fix this situation?

XRDC, do you trust the authorities (govt) to stop a tanker truck attack here? explain.

is America too dependent on the government?
why?

It was not the government that brought down United Airlines Flight 93 but the passengers themselves.

Our future depends on much more than the local authorities who are often discouraged from harassing muslims and illegal aliens. We ALL have to be vigilant. If we wait until a plot is in motion it will be too late. Everyone, therefore has a responsibility to be nosey, take notes, and report suspicious activity and in some cases physically take action.

In 1988 I was living in Kansas City and was awakened on nite by a huge explosion and bright flash. What happened was that over 9 miles from where I was there was a construction site for the interstate highway. On this site was a tractor trailer filled with amonium nitrate and due to some kind of organized crime dispute it was set on fire. Three fire trucks arrived and almost immediatly it exploded.
All that was left of seven firefighters was one hand in a glove.
Now I wonder about the story about organized crime?

I don't want to scare anyone, but an attack with a stolen tanker truck containing any kind of noxious, lethal, or explosive chemical is quite easy.

Also, do y'all remember a few years ago a passenger train in the southwest was derailed by sabotaging the tracks. Enough said.

The escalating cost of vigilance continues unabated.

2003-2005 saw many trains derailed. mostly train tanks. some originating in Canada, derailing in US. 2006-present saw an increase in tanker truck explosions on US highways. there was one report near Charleston SC where a group in a car make a tanker swerve off the road. DOT records have many (over 100) as unknown cause, many have chared drivers who can't explain the event.

Just a tip for Iraqi civilians: the Germans first used chlorine at the 2nd Battle of Ypres in 1915. All the entente front line troops in its path ran for it except for a Canadian battalion: one of their officers was a chemistry teacher in civilian life and, recognising the smell, he told the men to urinate in their handkerchiefs and breathe through them. Apparently the alkali neutralises the hydrochloric acid. The Canadians held the subsequent infantry attack.
The Brits were throwing gas back at the Germans within 6 months but when Saddam Hussein used gas against the Iranians, Khomeini refused to use it in retaliation, calling it an un-Islamic weapon.I'm not superstitious but I think there is a bit of a curse attached to to using the stuff. Haber, the German Jewish chemist who dreamt up the use of chlorine in warfare, first of all had his wife commit suicide on him, because she felt he had perverted science and then everyone knows to what use the Zyklon B he went on to develop as a pesticide, was put to.

3rd chlorine attack according to the BBC
