My skepticism remains. It was and is based primarily on the inability of the Europeans to project military force in a meaninigful way. This limitation is one of attitude as well as one of capacity.
The Europeans do not want to put troops in anywhere between Hamas-Fatah and Israel. I find it hard to believe that they would ever be willing to do so. I wouldn't put it past them to otherwise screw things up further, but the idea that they are affirmatively looking to put in troops is inconsistent with everything that has happened over the past 50 years.
I think Abbas and others have a confidence based on history, not a confidence based on some specific agreement of backing.
It is no secret that Fatah has more international support than Israel. Apparently, even Hamas now has more support than Israel.
It is the general international consensus that emboldens Abbas. He is after all the "good cop" who must "be supported at all costs."

I can't understand the stupidity of this administration. Why is it in the US interest that Hamas and Fatah stop fighting each other? There is no hope of peace with Israel as long as the Palestinians are Muslim. Study Islam and this should be clear. Since Israel is our ally and the motto of most Palestinian Muslims is "Death to America" with dancing in the streets if there is another 9/11, I think we should have a totally different strategy wrt the Palestinian-Israel conflict, one that is far less friendly to the Palestinians who hate us. Why is this not obvious? Maybe it's all pretense to humor the oil rich Arab states.

I think that Wisdom from above helped John as he functioned at the UN. I also believe certain members of the Senate were always enraged at John as they were at other Christians put forth for nomination by Pres. Bush and they didnt even know why they felt that way.
