Michael Chertoff has been breathing in the same PC fog as has Frank Pastore. But in Chertoff's case, he is in a position to have immense influence over policy.
From WorldNetDaily.com, with thanks to all who sent this in:
Citing recent internal memos, Department of Homeland Security employees complain their boss Michael Chertoff is hamstringing counter-terror operations with pro-Islamic political correctness. They say headquarters has cautioned officials not to describe Islamic terrorism as Islamic and to respect Islam as a "religion of peace."
"It's constantly drilled into us that Islam is not the enemy, and that the terrorists are merely a minority of 'extremists' distorting Islam," said one official who wished to go unnamed.
DHS Secretary Chertoff set the tone in a staffwide memo last year, when he described as "extremists" the two dozen Muslim terrorists who plotted to blow up 10 airliners over the Atlantic. Unlike British authorities, Chertoff did not mention the religious motivation of the terrorists. Nowhere in the one-page memo were the terms "Muslim" or "Islamic" used.
In this he cuts off for his staff the chance to learn a tremendous amount of information about why the jihadists are acting, what they regard as acceptable and unacceptable behavior, what they might do and not do, and much more -- because it is all tied up with Islamic law.
WND has obtained a copy of the internal alert from Chertoff, which was distributed to staff at 7:57 a.m. Aug. 10 – within hours, it says, of the arrests of "a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States.""It's ridiculous. 'Extremists' could mean anyone. Who are we talking about here? Neo-Nazi extremists? Environmental extremists?" another DHS official said. "It's so politically correct. If the head of Homeland Security can't say it, who can?"
We can. And we must. Comfortable fictions get us nowhere. Abandoning truths because of fear and political correctness gets us nowhere.
He noted that as a Jew, Chertoff is especially sensitive to charges of bigotry leveled by Muslim-rights groups. In a press conference on the sky-terror plot, President Bush called the British terrorists and their ilk "Islamic fascists" but quickly backed off the remark after the Council on American-Islamic Relations and other Muslim groups complained.
Longtime Bush confidante Karen Hughes warned the blunt phrase was hurting her efforts at the State Department to improve the U.S. image in the Muslim world. The president has not used the term again, opting instead for the generic "extremists."
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also has toned down her war rhetoric.
Last month she referred to the terrorist group Hamas as a "resistance movement," even though the group has been on her department's official terror blacklist for a dozen years.
A former senior CIA analyst says America is losing the war on Islamic terror because of such political correctness.
"We are losing in Iraq and Afghanistan because the political leaders in both parties – and their politically correct acolytes in the media, the academy and the general officer corps – refuse to square with the American people about the enemy's motivation," said Michael F. Scheuer, who headed the CIA's bin Laden unit.
He says the enemy is motivated by faith in Islam and is carrying out a jihad, or holy war, against the West.
Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes says it's strategically important for the U.S. and its war allies to accurately identify the enemy.
"You cannot diagnose and treat a disease without first identifying and naming it," he said. "So, a strategist cannot defeat an enemy without first identifying it and naming it."
Still, in a report issued last month, the Homeland Security's Advisory Council recommended DHS continue to soften its language when referring to the enemy.
"The Department should work with subject matter experts to ensure that the lexicon used within public statements is clear, precise and does not play into the hands of the extremists," the advisory report said.
The report, released by the DHS Advisory Council's Task Force on Future Terrorism, also recommended implementing more "Muslim outreach programs."
"Broader avenues of dialogue with the Muslim community should be identified and pursued by the department to foster mutual respect and understanding, and ultimately trust," the report urged.
[...]
DHS stresses to field agents that the majority of Muslims don't believe in violence and to avoid profiling them as terrorists. CBP agents are told in daily musters that "violence is against the teachings of the Quran," according to official briefing documents obtained by WND that train inspectors in proper techniques for interviewing potential foreign terrorists entering the U.S.
It would be interesting to see them try to make their case by actually referring to the Qur'an as it is used within Islamic tradition. But I'm sure they don't, because they can't.
"Key points: Not all violent true believers are Muslim. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols are considered to be violent true believers," emphasizes a January 2004 briefing document marked "For Official Use Only.""The majority of Muslims are not terrorists," it adds, "and believe violence is against the teachings of the Quran."
So once again the hapless McVeigh is trotted out to stand alone against hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Islamic jihadists. And I'll wager that no one involved in preparing this briefing document noted how absurd their own argument was based on numbers alone. Nor is there any Christian Church or sect that teaches McVeighism, while jihad and Islamic supremacy are mainstream, and are taught by all orthodox Islamic sects.
Holy Cow!!! (no offense to Hindus)... This type of political correctness just goes too far!!! I have to wonder, if Muslims find the term "Islamic fascist" so offensive, why do Hezballah, Islamic Jihad, Al Aqsa Martyrs (Fatah) and Hamas's military wing ALL use the fascist/Nazi salute? One would assume that ANYONE who commits violence in the pursuit of some real or imagined end could be classified a "true believer" in what ever that end may be... However, they (our government)have certainly missed the boat... I guess it's all in how one defines "true believer"...
"The majority of Muslims are not terrorists, and believe violence is against the teachings of the Quran." ... I guess it's all in how one defines terrorist... the fact that they are Muslims who believe in what the Qu'ran teaches sure fits MY definition.
Sounds like Chertoff couldn't touch an immigration questionnaire about Muslim beliefs to save our lives. This is why Robert Spencer's idea of a questionnaire is so brilliant. It exposes that our leaders are not protecting us even under current law.
A questionnaire is something that even a few, a very few, MSMers can support. They can ask Chertoff, where is his head?
He, and all those who think this is a good policy, should be asked to explain themselves. They should be asked to explain why it is, those who "take a leadership role" (there are no leaders, apparently, any more) in government, and who therefore have the duty of both instructing and protecting us, will not instruct, but rather manipulate, distort, and even hide the truth, because that truth is so disturbing, and implies so much by way of past folly, and by way of current responsibility to change things, that they just are at their wits' end -- they know not what to do.
We can't have people ruling over us, in our names, presuming to protect us, taking their goddam "leadership roles," if they are at their wits' end. They should be replaced by those who have much more wit, so large a store, so ample their reserves of intelligence and knowedldge, that they will never be --- at their wit's end.
Ignorance resulted in the annihilation of entire civilizations unwilling to face the enemy in clear honest concise terms.
As Bill Warner of CSPI (Center for the Study of Political Islam) explains - from the very beginning of islams existence, political correctness borne of fear prevented the identity of the threat.

Michael Chertoff, take off the blinders and remove the PC shackles from DHS. Our lives depend on it.
justamomof4 great post, but Chertoff would probably ask what are the dots for? And what are they connecting?
I am surprised Chertoff doesn't have DHS say that 9-11 was a plot to discredit Islam and interrupt Muslim immigration. To show trust, Chertoff should arrange for all Muslim crews of US B2 bombers over the US. He could ask for CAIR to help him pick the crews. Call them The Trust Islam Flights.
Meanwhile, non-Muslim Arabic speakers can't get jobs to translate documents that desperately need translating. Brigitte Gabriel, for example, applied for a translator job but would not get a reply until after she turned 36, saying translators need to be between 25-35. This is flipping crazy!

Hugh, even though a little late, am delighted you are connecting the political dots. Just follow the 'leadership' trail and it will lead you to you-know-who.. yes, dubya! Spend a few moments on dubya and you'll be horrified at the 'leader of free world' who dances to the Riyadh's long-distance tunes. Spend some more time on dubya and his sell-out dad will emerge selling out trusting, hard-working, tax-paying Americans to oil-rich wahhabis for decades. Think the oil-riches are missed out on the spoilt, AWOL son raised by illegal nannies on corrupt petro-dollars? Any wonder a call from Riyadh makes the 'leader of free world', piss in his pants? With all the power in the world, what do you think this spoilt, corrupt son will do? Answers are Condi, Karen Hughes, Iftaar dinners and extra student visas for Saudi Students (AFTER 9/11). Yes... follow the 'leadership' stench to the proverbial stinking head of the fish.
But you make a critical and a vital point. Leadership, it's collaborators, it's party and the political supporters.. of the hypocritical, self-defeating 'war on terror', should pay for treason. Sooner or later they will....
He noted that as a Jew, Chertoff is especially sensitive to charges of bigotry leveled by Muslim-rights groups.
Jesus, when did "sensitivity" become the be all, end all of life? I understand "live and let live" as a philosophy of being sensitive to the fact that not everyone has the same preferences in life, but "live and let plot to kill" is just a form of slow-motion suicide.
Look, it is obvious that Muslims are going to claim bigotry regardless of what we do. There are far and away enough examples of crying wolf amongst these groups that it should be a simple matter to make the assumption that they are using the charge of bigotry strategically to get us to back off. See the "flying imam" story as a particularly instructive example of this.
Chertoff is "objectively" (boy, I never thought this old Marxist terminology would make a comeback, but it is analytically useful) facilitating Muslim terror and if anyone had a clue, they would remove him from office forthwith.
Longtime Bush confidante Karen Hughes warned the blunt phrase was hurting her efforts at the State Department to improve the U.S. image in the Muslim world.
21st Century in a nutshell: government-entitlement class-Islam complex gains power; rising wealth gap; draconian taxes for those at the top; flight of high net worth individuals to low-tax countries; collapse of the social safety net; emergence of a Western society that won’t have the luxury to play these stupid games.
I always thought GWB was the lesser evil, but his often repeated nonsense about I'slam is a RoP' makes one despair.
Yes it is unbearable. But when you look at the opposition, isn't that much worse, 'too horrible to contemplate...?'
(Jack Straw's phrase.. in another context)
There's nothing remarkable or extraordinary about Chertoff's attitude. It is unremarkable and ordinary. And mainstream.
And when Spencer aptly writes "Michael Chertoff has been breathing in the same PC fog as has Frank Pastore", it should be noted that this fog is, in fact, the dominant oxygen of our atmosphere.
Speaking of two-faced weasels like Ibrahim Hooper and his ilk at CAIR , below is a "Victory" dinner hosted by CAIR-Canada for the alleged terrorist Maher Arar .
If ever their was proof for the FBI and the Democrats to keep Mr.Arar and his wife on the Watch-List for their links to Jihadist and the 9/11 hijackers, it's this new admission by CAIR that they backed the Sunni Muslim and his Palestinian wife who is pro Sharia-law .
CAIR's own Dr.Sheema Khan was at the Inquiry into islamophobia and gave evidence to re-enforce CAIR's assertions that Mr.Arar is innocent and a victim of Racism and Islamophobia , but now we see that CAIR stands to gain from Arar's law Suit because the RCMP has been smeared by Arar and won't dare monitor his financial donations to Saudi friendly Org.'s like CAIR.
* Note how CAIR allerted the Jihadists that they will be checked at the door by Security forces , either they are telling Al-Qaeda to back off for now or warning them to hide the C4 belt by dressing in a Burka or wearing a full Nijab to cover their face to get into a Government building.
The USA should increase border Security because CAIR has made it clear they want Canada as a Jihadists base to launch attacks into the USA and then use the dual-citizenship to Sue Canada for any harm that's self inflicted.

Plus, a Muslim MP now wants to weaken Canada's
anti-Terrorism Laws by voting this week to stop the "Preventative" arrests build into the provisions to stop Al-Qaeda before they slaughter canadian civilians.
It is ridiculous, when you fly to the US and you fill out your visa waiver card you are being asked whether you are or have been a member of the Nazi-party, or if you are involved in spying for the Soviet Union.
But 6 years after 9/11 still nobody ask's any questions about the 'ROP'- is this entirely due to Bush's naiveté, stupidiy or his deliberate self-interest in keeping his oil-deals with the Saudi's on track?
Why not take the PC all the way?. Replace all of Bush's secret service as well as the flight crew on Air Force One with Muslims just to show good will and absolute trust. Since Nancy Pelosi wishes to stop profiling on commercial flights, I think she should be forced to fly on commercial planes but if she insists on her own plane, she could demonstrate her lack of bigotry by having a Muslim pilot. I don’t know if Chertoff travels with a security detail but if he does, I think he should similarly demonstrate his goodwill towards the Muslim community with a similar gesture – a Muslim security detail. Since we all recognize that its just a tiny minority of extremists and has nothing to do with Islam and that Muslim Americans in particular are our best and most patriotic citizens and just need a chance to prove it, this would be the kind of terrific gesture on the part of our leaders who confidently assert the tiny minority of extremist line, that they are willing to put their very lives in the hands of Muslims. It would send a really positive signal to the Muslim community and could potentially win a whole lot of hearts and minds. Furthermore, I think Muslims should be the ones put in charge of choosing these Muslim pilots and security personnel for our elected government officials. CAIR, for example, could vet them. And CAIR could also ensure that that there would be no profiling of these hirees in terms of anything to do with Islam since Islam obviously has nothing to do with this and so to profile these pilots and security personnel on any grounds related to Islam would be completely discriminatory.
When I heard the "Caliphate Speech", I thought GWB was finally getting real about what is going on, but I guess someone told him to start sugar-coating it again.
It is now clear that he has at least a basic understanding of the nature of Islamic aggression, but he has decided that the public can't handle the truth.
There is no excuse for this.
Caroline, good practical suggestions. We need more ways for them to display trust at their risk and not ours.
Perhaps a stopover on the trips to Iraq?
Also Chertoff should explain why we didn't have immigration from North Vietnam during and after the Vietnam war but do from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
He should compare the Jane Fonda in Hanoi photo to the Jill Carroll captive photo and explain why Fonda is goofing off on an AA gun and laughing and Carroll is frightened. Comparing those two photos could be part of the questionnaire for immigration to the US. They could explain why Carroll is wearing the right headdress under Islam but Fonda is not, so why does Fonda look happy?

Last fall, DATELINE obtained information about this man, Magdy el Amir. He's a prominent doctor, a neurologist with a practice in Jersey City. Born and educated in Egypt, he moved to this country about 20 years ago and since then has built a fortune. He lives in this mansion, is generous to local charities and is an active supporter of both political parties. Should counterterrorism investigators take an interest in Dr. el Amir? Well, take a look at this document obtained by DATELINE last fall. A foreign intelligence report that makes a startling allegation about the doctor, that he has had financial ties with Osama bin Laden for years. The report was given to a senior member of Congress, Ben Gilman@, back in 1998 when he was chairman of the House International Relations Committee.
And who was El-Amir's lawyer?

The Record (Bergen County, NJ)
January 24, 1999; SUNDAY; ALL EDITIONS
Elamir ran afoul of the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1997 after applying for a license to perform radioactive imaging in
another of his offices. The NRC found that he had listed a Long Island doctor as his office's radiation safety officer and the sole authorized
user of the material without the doctor's knowledge, NRC disciplinary records show. The physician was not licensed in New Jersey, according to the state Board of Medical Examiners.
As a result, the NRC has prohibited Elamir from any involvement with nuclear medicine until 2002.
Last year, Elamir decided to take his managed-care company into two new arenas, Washington, D.C., and Michigan. The state complaint accuses American Preferred Provider of making improper loans to these sister companies, using $ 4.4 million from funds intended for the care of New Jersey Medicaid clients.
In addition, the state says American Preferred Provider improperly diverted $ 4.2 million to other companies that Elamir owns, and made
$ 800,000 in questionable payments directly to Elamir and $ 360,000 to his brother for"medical consultations."
Though Elamir faces no criminal charges, he hired Michael Chertoff, the former U.S. attorney in New Jersey, as his attorney last month.
"He has put an awful lot of his effort and money into this HMO over the last couple of years, building it into something that would serve
the underserved population,"Chertoff said. Elamir agreed to the state takeover, his attorney said, and hoped it would"end with a healthy
ongoing HMO."
He noted that as a Jew, Chertoff is especially sensitive to charges of bigotry leveled by Muslim-rights groups.
It's a crazy mixed-up world.
Key points: Not all violent true believers are Muslim. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols are considered to be violent true believers.
Hmmm. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two men of Middle Eastern appearance racing away from the Murrah federal building just after the blast. McVeigh spent the weeks leading up to the bombing haging out with Dr. Anwar Abdul, an immigrant from Palestine. It turns out that McVeigh's new freind, Dr. Abdul was on an FBI terror watch list for his connections with the PLO.
Chertoff needs to come to grips with reality.
My only question is: Why is Chertoff still employed by the government? We all witnessed his incompetence handling the Katrina problem. So does anyone have confidence he can handle a terror attack. I anyone suprised by this story?
At LGF there is a link saying THIS is Obama's church. Wow, if it is!

Chertoff, you're doing a heckuva job.
justamomof4/
Actually, there are about one million words in modern English which are currently in use and round about three to four million words in English across the ages since 1066AD which could be deployed as necessary and at need.
The number of words, however, is irrelevant. What is important, linguistically speaking, are the number of variant, or shaded, meanings which are possible in English as it stands today.
The total number of shaded meanings possible in current English has been estimated at some thirteen trillion possibles - and at some seven hundred trillion possibles if one includes the use of the approximately three to four million English words not currently in use to which I referred in the first paragraph of this post.
Add to this that it seems that current English vocabulary is growing at about nine thousand new words each month and that it is estimated that each new word added to the language expands the possible number of shaded meanings by an ever growing number which is always greater than ten thousand and we are the proud speakers of one of the most nuanced and useful languages on Earth - bar none.
No other language on Earth has a vocabulary as large as that possessed by English but, and much more importantly, no other language on Earth possesses the ability to shade meaning in the way that English does and to the extent which English does. Now, I'll grant you, that I am talking about what we refer to as Global English (GE) but, because of methods of modern communication, a significant number of us are capable of understanding most of GE - and those who post at this site demonstrate that rather well since many different people from many different strands of GE post here and we generally have only a very little difficulty in understanding one another. This makes English the most powerful language on Earth and, obviously, the most important base language for the future development of interpersonal communications.
It has been posited that learning English, at any point in one's life, does things to the brain's language centres. I don't have any references or links to hand but I remember from my University days one of my lecturers saying one could always tell from a brain scan the people who had learnt English because certain areas of the brain were better developed amongst them than amongst other people. He advocated, as I remember it, that English speakers had to cope with far more abstract complexity (shaded meanings) than any other speaking peoples and that this had an effect upon the brain development.
Interestingly, this lecturer also had a long list of the occassions on which an English speaker could answer a question in the affirmative whilst quite clearly conveying a negative to other English speakers. Apparently English is alone amongst all languages, with the sole exception of Gaelic, in being able to use the affirmative as the negative and, equally as importantly, vice versa which Gaelic cannot do.
Mr. Spencer has often railed, mildly, on this site about those barbarian moslems who attempt to tell us that because we don't understand Arabic then we don't understand the full meaning of their so-called holy texts. Well, despite code-switching and the use of various forms of colloquial Arabic, the total number of words available to an Arabic speaker is fewer than eighty thousand (about thirty thousand fewer than modern French and about nine-hundred-and-eighty-thousand fewer than modern English). The koran deploys a vocabulary of a mere two thousand words (yes, that's correct, just two thousand words). If one looks at the speech patterns and meaning insertions of Arabic speech, even taking into account dialect and code-switching, then the total number of shaded meanings available to an Arabic speaker today, or at any time in the past, is around about eight-hundred million possibles as opposed to the thirteen trillion possibles for English as I stated in the third paragraph of this post.
Frankly, the idea that Arabic - at any stage of its development - cannot, or could not, be translated absolutely (and I use that word advisedly) correctly into English is just risible. And stupid!
Incidentally, brain scans of people who only speak Arabic show a significant lack of development in many important areas over and above the language and speech centres - as, to be fair, do such scans show a similar result for all other shaded meaning and vocabulary sparse language speakers. It is obvious that the development of complex language skills amongst Western - and also Chinese - people have greatly aided societal development and the ability to handle change and diversity (but that's just an opinion, although one supported by many academics).
Dominic.
necessitasnonhabetlegem, very interesting factoids; thank you!
I don't get why liberal apologists for islam always bring up McVeigh, who was not even a religious person, as some sort of moral equivilancy for millions of islamic terrorists.
Chertoff should never have taken this job. It's too sensitive for a Jew to take. It's bad for a Jew to be see as head of US Homeland Security because any major screw ups will redound on the Jewish community. I say this as a Jew
Aside from that he's been awful. He's a Bush stooge. His actions are those of a man making his bones to be considered for higher office. Maybe Supreme Court
Borg; yup, thats it and actually the MSM has mentioned this Church. But nobody was listening.

I think Jeb Bush who is out of a job, should be the head of Homeland Security.
At least he gets it about disasters. We are in so much danger if the What-cha-ma-callits are successful in attacking one of our popualtion centers.

I don't think that he's been awful, I think he's a disaster! This guy has done nothing meaningful towards making me feel safer or better about my country. This is another "Busch Apointee" that needs to be turned out a soon as possible. This job does not call for anyone that is PC. This along with Karen Hughes modification of Bush's words as to not offending the Arab world is another PC effort that needs to stop.
Chertoff is a politically-appointed, spineless PC schmuck. But then again, so are the people who appointed him.
I'm not suprised. He's just following orders. Nothing will change. Wouldn't want to offend, you know. Wouldn't be prudent.
