Pelosi: Bush Lacks Power to Invade Iran

Playing politics with national security, and ignoring Iran's genocidal bellicosity. By David Espo for AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that President Bush lacks the authority to invade Iran without specific approval from Congress, a fresh challenge to the commander in chief on the eve of a symbolic vote critical of his troop buildup in Iraq.

Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Bush consistently said he supports a diplomatic resolution to differences with Iran "and I take him at his word."

As if a diplomatic resolution were possible.

At the same time, she said, "I do believe that Congress should assert itself, though, and make it very clear that there is no previous authority for the president, any president, to go into Iran."

This is just silly in light of how Presidents, Democratic and Republican, have waged war since World War II.

Hilary has been saying this too even after publicly defending her husband for his military actions.

Inconsistent people are traitors. They mask it by such verbiage. Oh ZAP them. Absolutely of no consequence.
Empty noise. Not to worry will have no effect at all.

Faltering and fumbling with howeverr, youknow...but with knotted brows such ought not to be able to impede Road to Justice.

reading too much into it?
if Bush would use his intelligence wisely and show a clear reason of Irans' threat then the US wouldn't be subjected to the criticism it has experienced with saddam Plamegat yellowcake WMD fiasco. we really can't afford another f*#kup like that.

so should we encourage the prez to speak up like the speaker is demanding?
if that would be a breach of national security we should know the details, no?
if the responsibility is put on the American people then does that make us bigger targets personally?

"Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that Bush consistently said he supports a diplomatic resolution to differences with Iran "and I take him at his word."

....ODD, she doen't take his word on other topics...Pelosi is but one of many wishy-washy politicians...not a true leader...

Pelosi is even ignoring the War Powers Act of 1973. It specifically says the Pres can do whatever he wants; Congress has to approve it within 30 days or the military has to be out in 90 days. Seems to me an Ohio class sub would be in action less than one hour to totally eliminate Iran...for about 10,000 years.

And his INaction vis-a-vis Rwanda for example.. and failing to take action on Bin Laden.

The only country the Clintons attacked was Serbia!

This MUST be brought to focus during the campaign!!!

Maybe she'll lose at least ONE state due to her husbands war on the freedom-seeking Serbs in Europe.

What a disaster that was!

Shame!!!!

you must understand that the press uses contextual objectivity.
this is mearly a challenge to make sure the prez crosses his t's and dots his i's. and maybe to make it seem that America is all in chaos.
do you believe America is in chaos? that we are so against one another? is that how we should act?

Okay - then let's put this whole thing to a vote.

A formal declaration on this matter could be the best thing to happen. Therein we as a nation could formally declare our goal of severely damaging jihadi networks & abilities to launch attacks against the free world.

Nothing says that a declaration of war has to name specific pieces of Real Estate. ( correct me if I'm wrong )

Let's have the President make a speech and ask for a formal declaration of war against worldwide Islamofacism and/or jihadism.

Then we can mobilize this nation and can ask the people to do more than 'continue shopping as usual'. The US military forces have been asked to sacrifice a great deal in the last 4-5 years, but the American public has not been asked to do anything. Let's formally declare our goals and intentions and then step up and crank up the juggernaut. Really.

It's time for people like Pelosi and the President to Stand and Deliver. Both of them. All the rest too.

Iraq is one thing. It is a mess, and a mess from which an American victory, rightly defined, can be plucked only by a prompt American withdrawal. In such a case, the sectarian and ethnic fissures which are the inevitable result of the removal of Saddam Hussein (but would anyone wish the Kurds and Shi'a in Iraq, who make up 80% of the population, to have to permanently endure their treatment at the hands of a murderous Ba'athis regime that was simply a disguised despotism run of, by, and for the Sunnis, or some of them, in Iraq?) will not only grow but, it is devoutly to be wished, will cause such both Iran and Saudi Arabia, the two most maleovlent and powerful state supporters of the world-wide Jihad against Infidels (obviously, Saudi Arabia does not support the local "Jihad" against the corrupt, and therefore "un-Islamic" Al-Saud family itself), to be preoccupied, and to have to spend their own money, send their own volunteers (or possibly, in Iran's canse, those from the Hezbollah in Lebanon, or in Saudi Arabia's case, Sunni Arabs from Jordan, Syria, and Egypt), and their own war materiel, and anything approaching a steady, endless Iran-Iraq War that would divide and demoralize the Camp of Islam, and serve as a Demonstration Project for Infidels who could observe, take note, and begin to learn, very quickly, about the nature of Islam and the menace of Muslims allowed to settle within their own lands, bearing in their undeclared mental luggage a belief-system that clearly rests on the division of the world between Believer and Infidel, and requires a state of permanent war between the two.

But Iran is another matter. The evident failure of the Bush Administration to deal adequately with it, and the horrific prospect of the Administration, stuck to Tarbaby Iraq, permitting the Islamic Republic of Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, that is the very weapons, or kinds of weapons, whose posited existence furnished the only rational justification for the American invasion of Iraq (Iraq the Light Unto the Muslim Nations was always nonsense, based on a misunderstanding of what "democracy" is and what Islam is). NOthing must be done to inhibit or discourage, not an "invasion" of Iran -- that is out of the question -- but rather something quite different, an "attack" on Iran from the sky, from distant missiles, and planes, with not a single American soldier entering on the ground, not only is far more justifiable, given the evidence, than the land invasion of Iraq ever was, but more necessary. For Iran must not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons. It must not be allowed to acquire the weaponry, that is, with which it can threaten Infidel states -- not only Israel, but other Infidel states. And not only because of what might be done by this or that Iranian regime, but by those within Iran, groups, akin to Pakistan's I.S.I., that might have their own even more extreme views, or simply nameless groups or groupuscules, capable of laying their hands, with collaborators high up, on such weaponry, and sending it to all manner of terrorist groups or, indeed, other states.

Iran was and is more important than Tarbaby Iraq. But it is the continued American presence in Tarbaby Iraq that prevents what should be done in Iran from being done, or at least sensibly planned for.

If the Bush Administration leaves office with American troops still in Iraq, and without any attack on Iran's nuclear project, it will have been, in toto, the greatest fiasco in American history. And we will all pay. We are already paying.

This just shows what happens when people vote for "bread and circuses" instead of what is good for America.

Slimy gets like Pelosi and Murtha should have never been voted into office in the first place.

Politics has become nothing more than a popularity contest. The politicians seem to be more against America than her enemies.

Is there no un-American screed that the DhimmcRATs won't mouth? If they hate our country so much why are they here?

D*amned bunch of traitors!

The War Powers Act gives the President the power to do anything he wants?

Pelosi was silly? Um... whatever's happened since World War II, the Constitution should relevant, don't you think? It would be best, formally and for political reasons, for the country's representives to determine whether an attack is appropriate.

I think back a few years. It might have been best had India had destroyed chunks of Pakistan after the first Islamic nuclear test. Instead, the Clinton administration calmed the two sides.

Now, Rush Limbaugh says that "no one" among decisionmakes he's spoken to is seriously talking about military action on Iranian nuclear sites. Perhaps we'll have to factor this new horror into the equation, along with the growing Islamic population, not just in nuclear France, but in meganuclear Russia.

Rowane... bread and circuses...

I have a feeling of what it must have been like to be a Roman during the fall of the Western 1/2 of the empire.

willful ignorance

whose posited existence furnished the only rational justification for the American invasion of Iraq
No, terrorism was another perfectly legitimate and rational justification for the invasion of Iraq - not al-Qaeda, which the Left pretends is the only Islamic terror conglomerate that there is in the world, but the presence of Abu Nidal (killed a few weeks before the invasion), Abu Abbas (captured after the invasion), as well as Saddam's financial support to al Aqsa suicide bombers. Had that been trumpeted loudly, alongside the WMD argument, the withdrawal of support would have been more difficult even after the WMD's weren't found.

Ms. Pelosi is showing that George Soro's Shadow Goverment is working. Ms. Pelosi is walking to the drum of the One Worlders agenda. She has no intention to do the will of the American people.

Not all Democrats are doing this. The Left complains about the Rights ties to the Christian groups that are trying to preserve the country. No one is pointing out that the Left has ties to Soro's and his intentional of bringing down of America.

Is there anyone in the world that can show Ms. Pelosi's participation with Soros?

Is there anyone that can show further information of Soros' participation in the Nazi Party during WWII and ties to the Grand Mufi?

Now that more information is being freed up by Jewish organizations regarding WWII has anyone started doing research to incriminate Soros?

Is there anyone within the Shadow Goverment of Soros that has had a relapse of ethics and morality that will start leaking information or come clean?

Information on Soros should be researched as diligently as the search for Osama.

Just leave it to such silly broads from the Peanut Gallery as Nancy Pelosi and Hillary to conveniently forget that Iran has declared war on America and could strike at any time anywhere on US soil with potentially devastating consequences.

When --and, I mean WHEN-- this occurs, these royal dames of ditziness will JUMP into Bush's arms screaming for him to INVADE IRAN!!!!!!

I CAN SEE IT ALREADY!

"... the horrific prospect of the Administration, stuck to Tarbaby Iraq, permitting the Islamic Republic of Iran to acquire nuclear weapons ..."

That is some truly fine writing, Hugh. I'm really beginning to look forward to your posts. Also, I could not agree with you more. Iran's acquisition of nuclear weapons would go down as the single greatest strategic blunder of this entire new century. The complications of a nuclear North Korea pale in comparison.

The notion of martyrdom-fixated genocidal Islamists that believe in an apocalyptic 12th imam who can only be summoned through the advent of total war somehow obtaining nuclear bombs should be enough to make anyone's blood run cold.

We need not place a single boot on the ground in Iran. No nation-building, no police action, no installation of democracy. We need only break the bad boys' toys. Irreversible damage to Iran's nuclear apparatus must be our highest priority. Decapitation of their entire governmental elite should be a close second, followed by the crippling of Iran's economy. Merely destroying their precious few gasoline refineries might tip the scales. If needed, cut all pipeline connections to Kharg Island with the threat of crippling the pumping complex itself on our next visit.

These few measures alone would take Iran off of the radar screen. Little money would be available for outside funding of terrorism. With their clerical madmen dead or in hiding, a huge reduction of their meddling in Iraq would follow. I'm willing to endure $3.00 per gallon gasoline at the pump if that is a result. Further, I will reiterate a commitment that I have made elsewhere on the Internet:

Should the democrats attempt to impeach George Bush for showing the courage and determination to protect America's security through military intervention in Iran, I will publically demonstrate against all such efforts and do my best to sway the opinion of everyone I know against any such impeachment procedings.

I am far from fond of Bush, but our president needs wholehearted support regarding this vital mission. No more likely source of an atomic device for terrrorist use against America exists than Iran itself.

Those who are able to dismiss such ominous possibilities are rapidly becoming members of the enemy's camp.

As evidenced over the airplane debate and demands, Representative Pelosi thinks she is President. Remember that, "Representative Pelosi", that is all. Naggy Nancy and her fellow Communists are washed up leftovers from the sixties that are now in a dangerous position, a position of power. They hated the establishment then and they still do. The only thing is, they are the establishment.
The American people forgot why they voted the dems out of control of congress in '94. It hasn't taken long for the dems to refresh our memory.
Mr. Bush has all the authority he needs to take action against Iran.
A call for a declaration of war is folly. With a democrat controlled congress, this will never happen. They don't commit to that much for fear of being wrong some time in the future.
Iranian nuclear facilities need to be taken out and soon. The Russians will no doubt stick their nose in somehow, do some saber rattling and they could do some big time posturing, but I don't think Putin would actually take the opportunity to strike American forces.
The battle described in Ezekiel 38 & 39 has not yet taken place. This whole brush up with Iran and their daddy Russia could be a precursor to more.
