Sarkozy letter surprises French cartoons hearing

PARIS (Reuters) - A French paper accused of insulting Muslims by printing cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad surprised a court hearing on Wednesday with a letter of support from presidential candidate Nicolas Sarkozy.

"I prefer an excess of caricatures to an absence of caricatures," Sarkozy, the conservative interior minister who helped launch the French Muslim Council, wrote in a letter read out by a lawyer for the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The letter from the presidential frontrunner, whose ministry is also responsible for religious affairs, drew an angry response from one of three Muslim groups suing the weekly.

"He should remain neutral," Abdullah Zekri of the Paris Grand Mosque said at the court hearing the case on Wednesday and Thursday and due to deliver its decision at a later date.

The French Muslim Council held an emergency meeting later on Wednesday and some members urged resignations in protest, but its leader Dalil Boubakeur said no decision would be made now.

Go get them, Sarkozy! Nice to see a Frenchman taking on those losers for a change.

He may have to take up residence with that Redeker fellow after this.

This is just, and it will also help him win. Perhaps the political class, so very disappointing, in our own benighted country, will begin, dimly, to understand that it is being surpassed in understanding of important matters by a great many citizens, in whose name that class presumes to rule, with its glandhanding and backslapping fundraisers, its Projects For a New Tomorrow, its endorsements and its trolling for votes and its bloviating speeches and its failure to slow down long enough to study, and understand, and assimilate, what needs to be assimilated, all those jostling possessors of o'erweening ambition, taking their "leadreship roles," and somewhere in the dismal mix are a few oddities, honest and sensible people, who likely will not though they should prevail, and the rest the same old mediocrities, not up to it, each one full of his own particular kind of ideological or non-ideological but grasping, eye-on-the-main-chance kind of crap or -- as the French high-falutin'ly put it, avec tout son saint-crepin.

if they hadnt the balls to convert in a christian country then there would be no hope for them

but the french gov must back them up w. swift punishment for killing the murtads

shari'a - we don't like it
rock the casbah
rock the casbah

It is time for all politicians and every individual to refuse all Muslim demands for everything under the sun...

....And tell the truth...Muslims hate the truth...

Let me remind you that Sarkozy is the next President of France and that it is good news. Sarkozy is not anti American, not anti Jewish, not pro Arab, he is for economic reforms and for the "value of work" which is, in France, a courageous thing to say. He is a patriot. He is a real right wing politician, unlike Chirac. He will brightly be elected because his opponent (Ségolène Royal) is really bad, and also because he is very good. (last pools: 53 % against 47 % for her, some other pools said 54 vs 46 % !).

Sarkozy is good news for France... and we need good news at the moment !

And there is no way "Charlie Hebdo" can lose the trial.

By the way... Sarkozy is not "conservative" as claimed in the article. He is in fact revolutionary !

Sarkozy's letter is not a big surprise. There are common-sense people all over the world, but not enough of them.

There are, however, the sleeping, eating, bread-and-circus masses who accept everything and believe everything. And they are the ones that the islamic world loves to snooker.

I think if I just hear one more reference to Islam being a religion of peace, I will just puke.

Muslims have caused nothing but hatred and misery over the last 100 years and I am sick of it. Iran wants to lead the charge against Israel? Let it. And then nuke it into the ground.

Don't try to argue with beasts, it will only annoy you and confuse the beast.

I have never agreed with the "Europe is finished" crowd, and I see this as justification for that hope/belief. I expect Sarkozy will become the next President and then things may start changing quite quickly.

It's like kicking a lazy teenager out of the house.

I almost choked over my dinner while watching TF1 last night to hear Francois Hollande of all people coming out in support of freedom of expression.

Sarkozy did one of those take questions from the floor the other day and he stuck to his French Islam line which is perhaps the best strategic approach to hunt for the imaginary moderate Muslim, perhaps that is the transformation, but as we all know Islam is not moderate so good luck on that but he did insist that if you did not accept the laws and culture of France then you should not be in France. And you would have loved him insisting to some woman who called herself Algerian that she was French.

By his definition all of the participants in this legal action should be upping sticks as soon as they lose this case and hot tailing it back to their Islamic cesspits, we can always hope.

Other things I heard from Sarkozy was enabling people to work longer than 35 hours, a law to stop secondary strikes and pressure to reform the system.

I am now in the second year running of paying more out in social security then what I received in as turnover, but in 2008 I might actually see some money in my pocket from my work, if I have not given up by then, tip to people starting a small business, do not go mad in the first year, develop slowly, if you get a super duper contract for a bried period in your first year reject it unless you can spread the funds over a number of years, it kills you in the French system as the social security system works 18 months in arears and you start paying for it two years later. Yes I put moeny aside for it, but due to the arcane nature of these taxes even my accountant can't tell me what I am going to pay, so I was out by €18k, perhaps more, I still don't know?

joiesauvage, elect Sarkozy and I'll get a Fleur-de-lis tatoo to celebrate my French herritage! Vive La France!

Thank you Armalite, we will elect him. Prepare your fleur de lys tatoo lol.

If I remember correctly, sarkozy was the one who called the french rioters 'scum'.

Hes definitely not with the PC crowd.

yet scapegoats within the police are gonna be charged with the deaths of those 2 muslims whom hid from the police and electrocuted themselves by accident. why does the msm never report on the reasons why those criminals ran from the cops in the first place?

Crying over cartoons. What's next? Reruns of 24? Changing over,I'm hopefull for a Frenchman with nards. I'm French American, I can't vote, but if I could...Sarkozy.
