BANGKOK (AFP) - Islamic separatists could stage more "terrorist" attacks, Thailand has warned, after nine people were killed in overnight strikes as many Thais began celebrating the Lunar New Year.
Thailand's army chief of staff said the insurgents, who have battled the government for three years in Muslim-majority provinces of southern Thailand, could try to stage new attacks during upcoming Buddhist holidays.
"The violence may increase, and it will be the same kind of terrorist tactics," General Montri Sangkasap told reporters Monday after an emergency security meeting in Bangkok.
Thailand's junta chief, General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, and Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont had summoned military and security chiefs over the attacks that killed nine and wounded 44.
Surayud insisted that no more troops were needed in the region, and said that instead he would pursue his "hearts and minds" campaign to win over the area's residents to the government side.
"Our work now needs to focus on building cooperation between government officials and the people, to get rid of their apprehension of authorities," Surayud said.
The insurgents staged some 49 bombings, shootings and arson attacks late Sunday and early Monday, targeting mainly homes and businesses owned by Buddhists or ethnic Chinese, army officials said.
Three people were killed in shootings and six others in bombings in the 12 hours of violence, the officials told AFP. A total of 44 people were injured, they added.
On Monday evening, four more people were injured when militants staged two more shootings and a bombing in Yala province, police said.
"They want to frighten Buddhists and ethnic Chinese living there so that they will leave the region," army spokesman Colonel Acar Tiproch said.
Montri said officials believed the attacks were timed to coincide with the Lunar New Year holiday observed by many ethnic Chinese in Thailand.
Of course, this year's Lunar New Year also marks the start of the Year of the Pig.
"The violence happened because it was a holiday period when there were many people celebrating. We have to be careful during the next religious festivals," especially during important Buddhist celebrations in March and April," Montri said.

I thought it was quite lame how the king of Thailand gave up to the military in charge without so much as a squeak.Guess he knew what they would do to him.
One of the reasons given for the coup was that the ex Prime Minister was corrupt and hideously wealthy. (probably poor compared to the saudis!).
It is awful to see what is happening to this country. I have always wanted to go there as like Bali it is a favourite tourist spot for many Aussies.

Agreed that Islam is the probelem. Hugh, however is correct in calling for the immediate withdrawal from Iraq. We cannot stay indefinately, and every day puts a further strain on our infantry and military resources as a whole, that could best be spent elsewhere.
The folly of "winning the hearts and minds" of the Iraqis, a utopian dream without the requisite understanding of Islam itself, the failure on the part of the current administration, with Bush on the top of that list, is and was just that...folly.
It is true that Islam is the problem and won't go away if we leave. Unfortunately Islam is also the problem that won't go away, even if we stay.

The excert from the article is just another similar example of this flawed thinking. Failure to understand the basic aggressive tone of the "religion of war", Islam, lends itself to all sorts of concessions and capitulations where, to the rational mind, compels one to actually seek compromise, but in contrast to Islamic thinking, it is just another example of weakness to be exploited and an open invitation to continue with the jihad as planned.

Where's the UN? When it was Christian Serbs going at
Muslim Kosovars they cried for immediate action all over the place.
Yet the same UN remains dead silent whenever Muslims are not on the receiving but giving end of ethnic/religious cleansing - like in Iraq (with all the Sunni/Shia rivalry the fact that Iraq will soon be free of Christians, which presented under Hussein still 10% of Iraq's population is virtually omitted).

Speaking of "The Year of the Pig", my family watched the national new year show this weekend on CCTV4, and it wasn't just the commercials that banned pigs. Usually the new year's shows have little kid dancers dressed up as the animal of the year, and other actors dressed as the animal, pictures of the animal and skits and comedy routines about the animal. This year there was the Chinese character for pig in the background, and that was it. No one dressed as pigs, no mention of pigs, not even a "Happy Pig Year". This has never happened before. The next day my family watched a local show from Beijing, and they did have a typical show with dancing pigs and so on.
