I am old enough to remember the last days of the Shah, where only days prior to his downfall and exile, the "masses" turned out in the streets waving pictures of him in apparent support, so forgive me if I don't find the above compelling evidence of the average Iranian's support for Khameini and nukes. What I'm reasonably sure of them, is that there isn't broad public support for being nuked in retribution for Iran nuking Israel.
When the demonstrations in Iran started, I happened to be a lone non-Iranian on a bus full of Iranian soldiers, at that point students studying at a military academcy in this country. I naturally asked them what they thought the chances for those wishing to overthrow the Shah would be.
"None," they insisted firmly, as one man. "We Die for the Shah. Everybody fight and die for the Shah."
They said this with an air of such absolute certainty, that of course I was much relieved.
I wonder what happened to them. I wonder how many of them did fight and "die" for the Shah, and how many refused to, or even took the other side.
And naturally I wonder what their equivalents today are saying, and what they are actually going to, when put to the test, do.

The Shah was the best thing that could've happened to the Iranian people, Yes, he was a dictator, but he was also and enlightened leader that tried to drag his people out of the dark ages into the modern world.
He understood perfectly the corrupting influence that the Ahatollahs, Imans and Mullahs had on the people and culture of Iran, and he tried to curtail their influence, and that's why they hated him so much.
Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for a people that refused to see this, and so gave their support to a bunch of clerics who promised to take them back to the 16th century.
The Iranian people -- and especially the females -- deserve what they got.
They live in darkness because they preferred darkness -- as with so much of the Islamic world.

Why not take this seriously? The US Government needs to take action to begin cutting off commerce with any company that does any business of any kind with Iran; whether they are in Russia, China, Europe or the US. These are real sanctions that would work. Would China like to sell products in the US or Iran? Does Air France want to keep its US routes or those to Teheran?
Unless and until Iran changes, this could cause a recession, possibly major. We need to decide which is worse; the risk of a recession now or a nuclear war in a couple years.

This is exactly the kind of bluster-reflex I just watched in a documentary on Dr. Joseph Goebbels and the Nazi propaganda machine.
Hitler and the audience basically said these same things during a speech Hitler gave to an assembly of the True Believers immediately after Berlin was first bombed by the British. Change the names of the leaders and nations and change Allahua Ackbahr to 'Sieg Heil' or 'Heil Hitler' and you have the same content.

While we still have the upper hand the plan should be:
1: Withdraw from the U.N. and give them a 30 day eviction notice (and in the interim move our troops that are currently in Iraw to israel).
2: Cut off all foreign aid to every moslem country and any country that doesn't openly support the U.S.
3: Level Qom (and simultaneously Damascus).
4: Level the capitol of any country that complains (including Paris).

The US will never strike Iran first, even if every Pentagon analysis and scenario indicated this would be the most sensible and least costly move. Just as in WWII we will end up taking some egregious hit and then responding. This is really how it must be, as much as I hate to think of it. Otherwise it's like taking a baseball bat to the creep you just KNOW is set to attack you, so you save yourself the trouble. This only creates more trouble.
It is- theoretically- possible that some non-military solution will emerge in Iran. Extremely unlikely at this point, yes. But not impossible. Iran is similar to 1930s Japan and Germany in that the general population is smart and industrious, familiar with "real" civilization and subject to onerous and totalitarian "leadership". In these aspects and others they are radically different from any other Islamic state and they will be the leaders in the region when the dust finally settles. Think of the development and leadership role of Germany and Japan post-WWII, both of which suffered enormous damage by the Allies. One wonders what allies we can count on this time.
The fact that women and other Iranians are protesting in Iran at all right now says a lot about their culture. Just try that in Egypt (we send them what, 2 billion/year?) or in Saudi Arabia. We should never "count on" citizens inside Iran rising up and overthrowing the govt, but neither should we dismiss the whole country because of their carcinogenic leadership.
Alek- your idea is brilliant. I think AirFrance alone would have a huge impact. Why don't sanctions characteristically take this approach? Because they are window dressing.
The Iran-Iraq war lasted 8 years, nobody won, and the mighty armies battled up to a UN cease-fire resolution in 1988.
We recently saw the Iraqi army handily defeated the second time, and now Iran's leaders are voicing their fears along with their hatred.
Because of Iran's complicity in killing Americans and their other stated intentions, it's only a matter of time before Bush orders military action.
