Indonesian jihadists get slap-on-the-wrist jail terms for schoolgirl beheadings

Islamic law mandates a lesser penalty for the killing of a non-Muslim than for the killing of a Muslim. It looks as if this notion has a lingering influence in modern, moderate Indonesia, where a court just handed out strongly for penalty and repentance, giving the Islamic jihadists who beheaded three Christian schoolgirls appallingly light sentences.

"Indonesian militants get jail terms for beheadings," from Reuters, with thanks to all who sent this in:

JAKARTA, March 21 (Reuters) - An Indonesian court jailed three Muslim militants on Wednesday for the beheadings of three Christian schoolgirls from religiously divided Central Sulawesi province.

Judges found the main defendant, Hasanuddin, guilty of masterminding the beheadings of the Christian girls in 2005 in Central Sulawesi's Poso region and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

A separate bench sentenced Hasanuddin's accomplices, Lilik Purnomo and Irwanto Irano, to 14 years in prison.

Chief judge Binsar Siregar said Hasanuddin asked his accomplices to put the severed heads in plastic bags and place them outside Christian houses.

Hasanuddin scrawled a warning on a piece of paper saying: "A life for a life. A head for a head", and put it in one of the bags, the judge said.

The attacks were aimed at avenging the killings of Muslims during the 1998-2001 inter-religious violence in Poso.

"just handed out strongly for penalty and repentance..."

If you are not among the crisrixians or others of that ilk who who need no guidance on this score, or for these lyrics, then see "The Lonely Death of Hattie Carroll" by Bob Dylan.

And for more on the syntax, with no enclosing quotation marks because of the problems that would ensue with quotations within the text, from the founder of the crisrixians:

Ricks focused on one line to demonstrate how Dylan carefully uses tempo and structure to convey the song’s principal themes of difference and inequality. “The judge ‘handed out strongly for penalty and repentance William Zanzinger with a six-month sentence,’” he said. “Syntactically, it won’t work. There’s an immense number of things wrong with it. If you believe that he’s uneducated and unimaginative, you will think something just goes wrong with his syntax and he should report to the writing program. If you think, as I do, that he’s extraordinarily innovative, then the terrible turmoil in those lines is to the point.”

Not a day goes by that you don't see evidence of Islam's brutality and warped sense of justice and morality. These animals will be out in a few months. They should have been executed to show the population what revenge leads to; had they been n0n-muslims they would have been. Come to think of it, had they been non-muslims, they wouldn't have done it.

They were girls after all. And we all know what Islam thinks of girls. Baby factories.
Less Christian babies. I'm suprised they didn't give them medals.

Sorry, but I can't agree that 14- and 20-year sentences are slaps on the wrist. Inadequate, maybe, but you might find similar sentences for similar crimes in some parts of the United States. Does Indonesia even have the death penalty? We've got to remember that a lot of countries don't, and regard us as barbarians for keeping it on the books.

(Personally, I'd find the death penalty inadequate for this. At a minimum I'd go for drawing and quartering.)

Indonesia is a Muslim country and does have a death penalty. The article says the sentence was reduced because they showed "remorse" and the family forgave them.

They sure as heck have the death penalty. And apply it to convicted drug traffickers. Run a few kilos of marijuana (a drug they regard as equivalent to e.g. heroin) and you could end up in front of a firing squad. Murder schoolgirls in the most horrific way possible and you get a decade or two in prison, and will likely walk in much less time than that.

Absurd. Firstly, these aren't light sentences. Secondly, Indonesian jails aren't exactly a walk in the park.

As an Expat who has both lived and worked in Indonesia the sentence, or should I say the lack of a sentence for these Muslim minded killers is very typical. In fact, if the supreme court or any of the district court/Judges handed out a firm sentence to a Muslim killer of a Christian they themselves would be considered a traitor to Islam and their lives would be short lived. It's common knowledge that to get anything done or find real work, you have to be a Muslim; it's simple as that!!!!

Does anyone recall what happened to the 3 Christian girls that took starving prostitutes off the streets and feed them during Easter Weekend? Gee, as I recall (I was only miles away when this happened) their was over 500 hundred people massed in the streets during their trial calling for these teenaged women to be hung by the heck. Gee, the death penalty for Christian women who feed starving Muslims and a slap on the wrist for Muslim's that behead Christian Teenagers; nothing new here!!!

Look for them to be granted pardons next year. The indonesians have a tradition of doing so on one of the many holier-than-thou days they celebrate.

@ loler

Not light? You serious?

When somebody beheads three school girls -- CHILDREN! -- 14 and 20 years ARE light sentences when the sentence should be death, which a common drug trafficker gets.

Also, Ioler and Karl Pov, I'd really like to know what you think the sentence should have been. And why you think what you do.

For reference: Poso and nearby regions in 2000 and 2001 were wracked by communal clashes between Moslem and Christian communities, leaving more than 1,000 dead. Religious-related violence eased after Moslem and Christian leaders signed an agreement.

Now we have a vengeance killings, the sheer gruesomeness of which threatens to renew the violence between the roughly equal Christian and Muslim in the Poso/Sulawesi district.

BESIDES, HERE'S THE RUB ...

They'll be out in two years. It's what happens. By avoiding the death penalty, judges can free them anytime they like, whatever the prison sentence given at the end of the trial.

Some of those who engineered and carried out the Bali bombings of 2002, which "burned at the stake" 202 people for the "crime" of drinking booze in a nightclub, are already out, despite the riots of the families of Indonesia victims, who stormed the prison to kill these guys on the bombing's anniversary last year.

In addition to the fact that the death penalty is called for in these killings with prejudice, the failure to impose them means these people who have expressed "regret" over the killings and been "forgiven by the families of the victimes" -- who could do little else if they wish to be alive next week themselves -- is a total travesty of justice.

I remember being on Harry's Place debating and one poster told me that Indonesia was moderate as his way to explain that Islam was not really bad, well after releasing a certain Imam very early for his involvement in Bali, followed by the execution not jailing of Christians for attacks on Muslims, we have this case where these men carried out a horrible crime against teenaged girls and they get 20 years and 14 years. With the example of the Christians to go on, why wasn't it death.

Anyway Indonesia is a moderate Muslim country, well its like the moderate Muslim, a mythical fabled beast that exists only in the imagination of peoples who moral compass points up their arse.

@ Daffersd

Indonesia is moderate. I define moderate as being true to the faith. A moderate Christian follows the teachings of Jesus. A moderate Muslim follows the teachings of Mo.

LOL anyone following the teachings of Mo is hardly moderate.

Morgan Sinclair, if you will go back and read my post, you will see that I've answered your question.

In judging the sentences, in any case, we would really need to know parole and/or probation practices in Indonesia. If it's certain that these guys are going to serve out the sentences as given, 14 or 20 years is still not exactly a slap on the wrist. Inadequate, yes, and I agree that the expressed (possibly under intimidation) feelings of the victims' families should not have softened the sentences.

Did the victim’s family forgive? Very Christian of them, lucky they did not turn into Muslims mid way and started beheading people back for revenge.

Don't forget of Muslim rights across the Western countries the demands, the victim hood they face, the right to cover-up as a social prisoner and demand prayer rooms another social prison of separation but obviously they forget their own Middle Eastern countries don't give a damn about the infidel in the same way they demand rights across the West. They need a long holiday back to the East and the second generation Muslims born in the West experience life there and that might teach some double standards, actually it might be worse they may end up thinking treating infidels as second class is acceptable so maybe not.

As Muhammad said:
Two goats wouldn't bother to butt their heads over this

Muhammad said this in response to an assassination he requested

I wish I knew what Mohammads body count was under his name and how many orders he has in his diary of the Koran of executions and his own actual killings face to face against a person or group. Does anyone know is there a fact sheet?

Daffersd

LOL anyone following the teachings of Mo is hardly moderate.

I am talking about being a moderate in the context of Islam, not by our values as being a moderate.

Never forget when you read of such atrocities these are RELIGIOUS acts. And the quote -religion- unquote is Islam. Evil in all its distinct repulsiveness there in the broad light of day. A young girl's severed head next to her body. Who can ARGUE with that. It IS for all human beings who are still human beings to see.

Light? You bet its light!

Wasn't it in Indonesia where some Christian parents were threatened with the *DEATH PENALTY* for the high crime of inviting some muslim schoolchildren to a christian party? As I recall it was a birthday party or perhaps a easter party. Nothing sinister about it the kids just wanted to invite their [muslim] friends.

From Barnabas Fund: (12 Sep 2006)
In the past few weeks there has been an upsurge in the persecution of Christians. In a village near Banda Aceh seven houses built by a Christian organisation for Christian victims of the 2004 tsunami cannot be occupied by the Christian families they were intended for. Local Muslims organised public demonstrations outside the houses, protesting at the imminent arrival of the Christian families, who dared not then move in. Signs were erected outside the houses to say that Christians were not allowed. The same Christian organisation had built over 200 houses for Muslim victims, but only Christians were prevented from occupying their houses.

Are these Muslim post birth aborticide procedures which are emulating western infidels?

CAIR can you please check into this as is this now Islamic policy.

I think what was done in the name of Islam here was disgusting. What is so 'Jihad' about beheading innocent school girls? I would love to see others like war criminals getting beheaded. Fellow Jihadi friends let us not waste our blades on the throats of women...we have a bigger Job. InshaAllah

Definition of innocent anyone?

The article says the sentence was reduced because they showed "remorse" and the family forgave them.
I have little doubt that if the family didn't "forgive" them that their lives would be forfeit.

And Amrozi is still smiling

OH well!
thats indonesia

Man gets 30 years for ripping out wife's eyes
March 21, 2007 - 7:42AM

A man who ripped out his wife's eyes in a fit of rage was sentenced by a French court to 30 years behind bars on Tuesday.
Mohamed Hadfi, 31, tore out his 23-year-old wife Samira Bari's eyes following a heated argument in their apartment in the southern French city of Nimes in July 2003 after she refused to have sex with him.

I find it interesting that muslims in indonesia really hate christians. They need to remember it was the infidel christians who were the first to help them when they suffered during the tsunami. Where were all their fellow muslim helpers??

In Islam, Christians don't give charity to Muslims. Christians have a duty to give aid to Muslims, plus mandatory jizya (tax). Thus Christians cannot receive any credit or kudos for helping Muslims, since they are merely doing their duty, and Allah prohibits a Muslim from feeling friendship in his heart towards unbelievers.

Is the poster at 1.16pm the jihadwatch version of the comedy relief provided by Naseem at dhimmiwatch? The poster, if genuine, knows of course that his personal struggle is a very public pathology. His own private jihad is precisely what fuelled these abominable murders.

How about the three Christians executed a few month back? double standard? heck no
