No return for Sudan's forgotten slaves

Islamic slavery is still alive and well in the Sudan. By Joseph Winter for BBC News, with thanks to all who sent this in:

Akech Arol Deng has not seen his wife and son since they were seized by Arab militias from their home in south Sudan 19 years ago.

His son, Deng, was just three years old at the time but Mr Arol is sure they are still alive, being used as slaves in the north.

"I miss them so much. I really hope that one day they come back," Mr Arol told the BBC News website mournfully in his home of Malualbai, just a few hours' on horseback from the Bahr el-Arab river which divides Muslim northern Sudan from the Christian and Animist south.

But rows about money mean no-one is doing anything to free them.

In the same year that Mr Arol's family was kidnapped, Arek Anyiel Deng, aged about 10, was seized from her home, not far from Malualbai.

Arab militias rode in to her village on horseback, firing their guns. When the adults fled, the children and cattle were rounded up and made to walk north for five days before they were divided between members of the raiding party.

Forced conversions

Ms Anyiel returned home under a government scheme last year.

"My abductor told me that I was his slave and I had to do all the work he told me to - fetching water and firewood, looking after animals and farming," she said.

"When I was 12, he said he wanted to sleep with me. I could not refuse because I was a slave, I had to do everything he wanted, or he could have killed me."

Such raids were a common feature of Sudan's 21-year north-south war, which ended in 2005.

The northern government is widely believed to have armed the Arab militias in order to terrorise the southern population and distract rebel forces from attacking government targets.

According to a study by the Kenya-based Rift Valley Institute, some 11,000 young boys and girls were seized and taken across the internal border - many to the states of South Darfur and West Kordofan.

The boys generally looked after cattle, while the girls mostly did domestic chores before being "married", often as young as 12.

Most were forcibly converted to Islam, given Muslim names and told not to speak their mother tongue.

It's stories like this, about real victims of slavery that make American race-baiters like Al Sharpton disgust me even more than they already do.

When will American "civil rights" activists who are demanding apologies for American slavery actually do something for people who are still suffering in bondage?

"ARAB militias" ??? (ARAB? o.m.g. did they really just say that?)

"forced conversions" ???

from the BBC ???

*falls off her chair in shock*

but seriously, along with senatortombstone and, I'm sure, everyone else who will comment on this thread, we all sit here and wonder why we never hear about this modern-day and very real slavery of blacks by islamists. Where are Al and Jesse?

I think the problem is, black leaders here in America don't want to touch this slavery issue because they believe that the people selling them into slavery are also black. Same reason we never see marches in the streets calling for an end on the rampant black-on-black crime going on here in the US, but they're all over the airwaves when a white man kills a black man. It's almost an unwritten rule - Blacks do not condemn other blacks, period.

Someone needs to let Al and Jesse know that even though the slave-sellers may look black, they are actually arab followers of islam. And they should also be informed that the islamists do this because of their holy book and the writings and life of their pedophile satanic prophet.

In fact, now that I think about it, I seem to recall Osama bin Laden, right after 9/11, speaking about something (I forget what) and he broke down the population of the world as, "the evil Zionists, the Americans, the Europeans, the Chinese, and the slaves" - where 'slaves' referred to everyone on the African continent.

Anyone else remember something like this ?

Here we go...

At one point, according to translators for the Bush administration and the Washington Post, bin Laden praises the two young Saudi brothers involved in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks like this:

"Killing oneself for the sake of God was better than the books and pamphlets. They [the brothers] made the whole world listen to them whether Arab or non-Arab or slaves [using a derogatory term for blacks] or Chinese. Better than millions of books, tapes or booklets."

Yeah, so the entire world is broken down into:
Arabs
Non-Arabs
The Chinese
and slaves (all the black ppl of the world)

Didn't hear Al or Jesse talkin' bout that, either.

Wasn't it in Sudan where Clinton 'apologized' for American slavery?

They only enslave people because Bush wants oil and white people are racists. Now, what steps can we take to reduce Islamophobia and therefore abolish slavery?

What slave trade began earlier, ended (where it ended at all) later, and claimed the greatest number of victims of black Africans? For that matter, what slave trade also carried off millions from both Western Europe, and from the Slavic domains, as well as, especially from the Caucasus, Georgian and Circassian girls for the harems of Muslim masters?

Why, the Muslim slavers-- above all, the Arab slavers. They have never apologized, they have never discussed, they have never been asked to make amends.

Only in Zanzibar, when the black Africans revolted in the 1960s, were a few Arabs killed in revenge -- that is how, by the way, Tanganyika became Tanzania.

Now the Arabs have the greatest unearned wealth in human history. Since 1973, little more than a third of a century, they have received, because of an accident of geology, more than ten trillion dollars (in 2007 dollars) from oil (and gas) revenues. There is all that money slosthing about. There is that long history of enslavement of black Africans.

One word comes to mind, and the very raising of that word ought, if it is repeated long and loud enough, end in at least some money being pried from the greedy hands of, say, the Al-Saud:

Reparations.

That the arab moslems get or have no blame for the slave trade is the first of the canards.

Another is that the West went into islamic lands to "colonize" them not, well let's see, first to recover the lands and assist the Christian inhabitants who had lived there for centuries (the Crusades) and who were under threat from the moslems and second because of the treaties after WWI and WWII in which the islamic nations were among the aggressor nations that LOST.

The Arabic word for 'black' and 'slave' is used interchangeably, so I have been told. Yet, in the US, the Arab Muslims have long sought to convert black Americans by stirring up the 'victim' pot, ie, both groups being abused by the larger American society. American black leaders and curriculum designers of history books are among those responsible for this dangerous ignorance of history. Softball statements like, "Islam arrived in African..Islam spread throughout Africa," denies completely the bloody conquest by the Arabs to the black Africans and the brutal suppression of African Christianity and Judaism and the huge, centuries old Arab slave trade that continues today in Sudan and Mauratania against black Africans.

No doubt slavery is still a point of pride in Islam, along with polygamy, killing apostates and other ancient forms of barbarism. Where are the "moderates" to condemn this atrocity?

Arabic for "black person" and for "slave", is Abd. Same word

"...or slaves [using a derogatory term for blacks]"

Well that clarifies the infatuation with Whitney Houston. Quality slaves are hard to come by, I guess.

sing: "I'm enslaving all my love...for you"

To be fair, they're not doing anything that mohammed didn't do.

When will American "civil rights" activists who are demanding apologies for American slavery actually do something for people who are still suffering in bondage?

When the perpetrators are white Americans or Europeans.
Simple as that.

JenBee - I remember that exactly like you said!

The Chinese

Nor hhave we heard a peep from Keith I mean Hakim Ellison or Barack Hussein Obama. Actually we haven't heard a word from ANYONE. Including Dhimya.

One word comes to mind, and the very raising of that word ought, if it is repeated long and loud enough, end in at least some money being pried from the greedy hands of, say, the Al-Saud:

And if they don't pay up we go in full force. No Rules of Engagement. What President would we have to get into office to make that happen?

I am afraid the SOWdis have been "investing" in our political infrastructure for so long that a D.C. Tea Party might be in order!

An interesting article about the changing relationship and closer ties between black and immigrant muslims:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/03/11/news/muslims.php

------------------------------------------
a snippet from the middle:

Some foreign-born Muslims say they are put off by the racial politics of many black converts. They struggle to understand why African-American Muslims have been reluctant to meet with law enforcement officials in the wake of Sept. 11. For their part, black Muslim leaders complain that immigrants have failed to learn their history, which includes a pattern of FBI surveillance dating back to the roots of the Nation of Islam.

At the heart of the conflict is a question of leadership. Much to the anger of African-Americans, many immigrants see themselves as the rightful leaders of the faith in America by virtue of their Islamic schooling and fluency in Arabic, the original language of the Koran.

But after Sept. 11, Muslim immigrants found themselves under intense scrutiny. They began complaining about "profiling" and "flying while brown," appropriating language that had been largely the domain of African-Americans.

It was around this time that Khan became, as he put it, enlightened. A few weeks before the terrorist attacks, he read the book "Black Rage," by William Grier and Price Cobbs. The book, published in 1968, explores the psychological woes of African-Americans, and how the impact of racism is carried through generations.

"It helped me understand that even before you're born, things that happened a hundred years ago can affect you," Khan said. "That was a big change in my thinking."

--------------------------

This can not be good.

interesting, chinese are listed after blacks. could it be that the arabs look down more on the chinese because they are so unislamic? I ,mean they eat a lot of pork, are practically animats or buddhists, and can't grow the mandatory long beards? I wish china knew about this as they go around the middle east acquiring business deals.

a very sad story, but encouraging to see another outbreak of truth at the BBC.
we all seem to be a bit OT, but ref desidude's comment above: historically the Chinese have tended to buy Muslims off rather than in engage in conflict. that was how they dealt with the first Muslim Arabs they encountered.
unfortunately, they seem to think that the present Sudanese government offers the stability necessary to maintain the flow of oil and so, like the current US administration, they will keep 'their' men in power for as long as that stability continues.
and if the Chinese want to eat pork in Khartoum, it will be available, i am sure.

"It's almost an unwritten rule - Blacks do not condemn other blacks, period. "

It's depressing that people can be so damned racist: judging people by their melanin-content instead of their behaviour. So much simpler, I suppose. And so dangerously simplistic.

WHAT, the BBC told this story... nah someone is mistaken.. they dont tell the truth..

This story is typical of what Muslims have done for 1400 years..
Which makes me wonder as to why the darker races are becoming Muslims as it is because of the Muslims that they even ended up in America in the first place and the Americans were almost as bad because they brought them perpetuating the trade, and thousands upon thousands died in the boats...

Well if we want the real story Ann Curry of NBC is interviewing the President of Sudan on the Today Show this morning. (BTW I only watch NBC for the local weather).

I am sure he will straighten out any confusion about slavery and how great Islam is for his country. LOL
