Karachi: A man found guilty of committing blasphemy by desecrating the Quran has been sentenced to life imprisonment, a court official said yesterday.Mohammad Yousuf, 44, was sentenced to 25 years rigorous imprisonment by the sessions court in the central city of Multan, public prosecutor Mohammad Siddique said yesterday.
"The court verdict was based on witnesses' accounts and evidence against the accused, which was very strong," Siddique said.
"He tore up the Quran and than threw its pages into a nullah [sewage] in his home village of Qutabpur," he said.
Desecrating the Quran is against the law in Pakistan and is punishable by death under Islamic law....
Cases of blasphemy are relatively common in Pakistan but death sentences have never been carried out because convictions have always been turned down by high courts citing lack of evidence. However, there are occasionally instances of enraged mobs attacking and killing people accused of blasphemy, including desecration of the Quran.
Rights groups say people often make accusations of blasphemy against people they hold a grudge against or if they belong to a different faith or religious sect....

It's a control system over the people even if it's a book about worms and they put a law that says you can not throw it away you will still go to prison for this long as this is how controling it is, for some people the koran is not that special when are they going to realise people are individuals not brainwashed machines.

All I can suggest is that someone hands these politicians a Koran and show all the intolerance anti-human and religious and racist claims the writers of this book have contributed. Then ask them how and why today and history shows such a pattern that it is infedelfobic, sexist, anti-Jewish and pro killing to bring Mohammad message across. I feel that our own government (or maybe it's the ACLU) is in some sense complicit in this outrage just by the fact that they insist on treating the Koran as sacred, by going so far as having our Military at Gitmo handle the Koran (the enemy's war manual for Pete's sake!) with gloves. Moreover, every stupid bookseller in the U.S. who bows to Muslim pressure to put the Koran on the top shelf, is complicit in this man's incarceration. SFSU officials, who are disciplining students who stomped on Hamas/Hezbollah flags with "Allah" written on them - are also complicit in this crime. Because shariah has gone global now. What this Pakistani man is facing is precisely what Muslims are pushing for in our own countries and anyone enabling that creeping shariah is basically on the same side as this Pakistani court who convicted this man to 25 years. If one enables the de facto enforcement of Sharia law here, then one is also complicit in enabling it there as well. Maybe those SFSU students can get hold of a photo of this guy and afix it to a placard they can hold when they have to go in front of the SFSU administration for the next disciplinary hearing.

It is interesting that much of the sympath this man gets is from the infedel...most muslims feel the sentence is just ....they are showing their love for Allah....again it is a matter of context.
Ofcourse there is no sentence for not reading it with reverence, or missing the odd sura out. You simply need a lifetime's practice...and violla ...Allah SWT is your saviour.
Now if they can do this to their own...just image the REAL sense of outrage they felt on the outrageous cartoon saga.
I agree that this sentence is very harsh...he must have realised the folly of his mistake as soon as he did it...it was probably an argument with his wife ...and he took it out on Allah SWT...sometimes these things happen....I hope his sentence is severely reduced.
Peoples know that simply having a koran in the house...in a neat and tidy place (high up) can keep you out of trouble.
My advice...get ahead, buy a hardback Koran (preferably one with a gold plated gilt edge), build yourself a high up shelf ...and put it there...giving it a clean every day... and if you pray every day to Allah SWT for success in whetever line you choose (e.g. business, schooling) AND you do it with reverence...just simply watch your success results grow.

The Koran musn't be kept in with the novels...the koran isn't just some fiction collection of stories ....it is the word of Allah SWT via the Angel Gibreel onto Muhd SAW who has kindly revealed this vital works of reverence for all our salvations.
My advice...take time off work...go home & please rectify immediately...today...now ... go..and then pray for forgiveness for the oversight.

Naseem, I have read many opinions from learned Muftis that say a translation of the Quran is not a "real" Quran. According to them, an English Quran is just an "interpretation." I'll put the book anywhere I please.
I would not allow an Arabic Quran in my home anyway.
