U.S., Britain slam Italy hostage deal with Taliban

Aethelred the Unready lives, but the United States and Britain aren't happy about it. By Phil Stewart for Reuters, :

ROME (Reuters) - The United States and Britain criticized Italy's hostage deal with the Taliban on Wednesday, saying the release of five guerrillas in exchange for an Italian reporter put NATO troops in danger and encouraged kidnappings.

A senior U.S. administration official said Washington had formally complained to Rome through diplomatic channels for putting pressure on Kabul to release the Taliban, adding the deal "caught the U.S. by surprise."

A spokeswoman at the British Foreign Office said the deal sent "the wrong signal to prospective hostage-takers."

of course.

Releasing terrorists for kidnap victims just encourages more kidnappings.

From the article:

"The U.S. official said the freed Taliban were believed to include Ustad Yaser, the head of the Taliban's cultural wing, and former spokesman Mofti Latifollah Hakimi.

Also freed were the brother of Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah and two other commanders, Hambdullah and Abdol Ghaffar.

The international backlash is the latest headache for Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, who has fought hard to keep troops in Afghanistan despite resistance from pacifists within his centre-left coalition."

---------------

Sounds like these were some pretty important dudes that got released.

Although, you can hardly blame them for making such a deal...after all, their primary duty is to their citizenry!

Why is NATO complaining? They refused to bomb Taliban funerals.

That old saying about crime not paying is out the window. Five jihadist killers are freed for one reporter who, if he's like most reporters, probably sympathizes with the eneny. Disgusting, because next time it'll be some soldiers or innocent civilians being taken for another trade.
Congratulations, dhimmi government of Italy-you've just contributed to making things worse in dealing with the Stone Agers of Afghanistan.

Here in Italian, is the incredible letter that Francesco Cossiga, former president of Italy, wrote to the Afghans (the Taliban, the tribes, whatever Afghans he could think of), with the reasons why they should, in his view, free Mastrogiacomo:

I'll put the English version below.

By the way they killed one hostage in front of that reporter also.
They should have at released a Maximum just 1 and done it by fair numbers. Maybe they could have put tracking devises on them some how to see what they are up too. Italy always gets it wrong they always have done in politics when they think they are right they wrong and when they are in the wrong they do another to seem right very Roman by nature but they seem to pay the last price.

Written again from above sentence and added new thoughts.

They should have at released at LEAST A Maximum OF just 1 and done it by fair numbers IN A TRADE deal. They could have said the prisoners converted to Christianity that would have have been off putting deal.

Francesco Cossiga, Life Senator (the kind of thing that is a great honor, and should be reserved for such people as Eugenio Montale and Rita Levi-Montalcini, both of whom received that honor, but by being given as well to the likes of Cossiga becomes tarnished and disreputable, like a Princeton University Professorship that is given to Cornel West as well as to a serious teacher and scholar) and former President of Italy (another great honor), wrote the following letter of craven appeasement, and tellingly revealing of both of those two pre-existing sentiments within Europe -- antisemitism (disguised, not very well, as anti-Israel sentiment) and anti-Americanism (disguised, not very well, as only opposition to certain policies of the current administration):

Rome, 12 March (AKI) - Italian life senator and former president, Francesco Cossiga has issued an impassioned appeal for the release of the Italian daily La Repubblica's kidnapped correspondent in Afghanistan, Daniele Mastrogiacomo, who disappeared one week ago in southern Helmand province together with two Afghans. Adnkronos International (AKI) has published the text of Cossiga's appeal for Mastrogiacomo, who is believed to be held by the Taliban in Helmand. The appeal argues that it is in the Taliban's political interest to free Mastrogiacomo.

Tribesmen, Taliban, members of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and all those resisting the invasion and occupation of their country by NATO!

This is an old man of Italian politics writing to you - a former defence and interior minister, prime minister, president of the Italian Senate, of the Italian Republic, and currently life senator.

I appeal to you concerning the seizure of journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo from La Repubblica daily. I will not engage with your accusations that Mastrogiacomo might be a spy for the British military services. I recognise your right to take prisoners and sentence them to death in accordance with Islamic law if they are found guilty of espionage against you. But this is only permissible after a fair trial as under the international military penal law of war recognised by all powers including non-Muslim ones.

Nor will I appeal to you on humanitarian grounds, when NATO forces have frequently violated human rights, killing civilians, among them women, old people and children.

I am instead sending you a political appeal.

By not restoring the journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo's freedom, you are not acting in your political interest, because you are acting against a government - the Italian government - which is your friend! It is not this centre-left government, which is pro-Muslim, anti-Israeli and anti-Zionist, that wanted NATO's intervention and the despatch of Italian troops to Afghanistan. It was the preceding rightwing government of Silvio Berlusconi!

The current administration cannot immediately withdraw the Italian military units because it would risk a mutiny back home by its military command that is bound to NATO and the US. But it will do so soon.

This government is your friend, just as it is the friend of the Iraqi resistence, of Hezbollah in Lebanon and of Hamas' Palestinian forces. This government is hostile to Israel and an antagonist of the USA.

This government has in recent days also refused to increase the deployment of Italian military units in Afghanistan or to boost their troops numbers in the south, where you are engaged in the armed reconquest of your territory from NATO and the puppet government in Kabul!

This government is backed by Catholic and secular anti-Imperialist and anti-Zionist forces, who have refused to view as an act of terrorism al-Qaeda's military action of 11 September [2001].

This government is your friend and will you will deal it a mortal blow if you do not free the journalist Daniele Mastrogiacomo. To kill him would cause the current government to fall and it would be succeeded by a rightwing government that is a friend of the United States and of Israel, fully obedient to NATO and is your enemy!

Not to save Daniele Mastrogiacomo's life and restore his liberty would be a grave error. He is a prominent journalist for the influential leftwing La Repubblica daily, which has always opposed "anti-Muslim Crusades," and the war in Iraq and in Afghanistan. What would progressive public opinion say if you were to kill a correspondent who has always written articles in your favour!

I am not a part of the government, or of the ruling majority, but am an Italian working for the safety of an Italian.

Tribesmen! Taliban! Members of al-Qaeda! Release Daniele Mastrogiacomo without impossible conditions or at least spare his life! It would an immense victory for the Afghan resistance and the triumph of Islam not just in Afghanistan, but in Iraq, in Lebanon and in Palestine.

Yours respectfully,

Francesco Cossiga
Former president of Italy

Moral of this tale:

It is absurd for these cases of journalists, almost always from left-wing newspapers or radio stations -- Alan Johnston, the pro-"Palestinian" correspondent in Gaza (just see what Wilson, the head of the BBC Middle East coverage on the spot, admitted about its "viewpoint" just last week), or that Giovanna whateverhername, the reporter for the fanatically anti-American anti-Israel far-left "Il Manifesto" (the one for whose liberation the Italian government paid so much, and also, in the mess surrounding it all, an Italian secret service agent was killed by Americans who were wary of a car, in the night, all its lights out, hurtling toward them on the highway to the airport.

There should not be an outcry, there should not be a payment of ransom, there should be no hoo-ha whatsoever if Western journalists, in situations of extreme danger, choose to ignore the offer of Western security because, then, you see, they would be "embedded" and therefore "compromised." Nicola Calipari, Italian secret service agent may have bee killed by an American soldier's bullet, but that was only the proximate cause - the real killer was Giuliana Sgregna, the Italian woman journalist who insisted on remaining in Iraq, unprotected, because she thought her left-wing views and sympathy for the local devils would protect her. And similarly, Mastrogiacomo, who almost proudly kept on his turban when he was released -- instead of ripping the symbol of his going native right off, and reasserting himself as a member of the advanced, unprimitive, unhostage-taking, non-Muslim Western world (god save us not only from the psychically marginal Spiritual Searchers in our own lands, but from those journalists who have no sense of what they owe their own countries, or how they are getting in the way, and causing such problems, by offering themselves up as sitting-ducks for ransom - which ransom, by the Italians, of course was paid).

And then there are the Francesco Cossigas of this world. For these people, one feels like saying what Karl Kraus said when asked what he had to say about Adolf Hitler.

He replied: "About Hitler, I have nothing to say."

But in the case of Cossiga, cat's-got-your-tongue isn't quite right. He's not, after all, quite in the Hitler league.

So what should we say about Cossiga? What does his letter entitle us to say about him, a Life Senator and former President of Italy?

Here's what. Here's the mot juste: He's a shit.

Wow! Hugh used a swear word and I don't blame him one bit. Cossiga sounds like Ted Kennedy (Senator for Life in the US) and Jimmy Carter all rolled up in one body. And what a waste of a body it is!

Dear Friends

I'm Italian, and I want to clear up what Francesco Cossiga has written.

Francesco Cossiga is no left wing communist or muslim lover at all, he never has been. I have read quite a few of his articles in the last few months and there is not one which he has written which is supportive of this left wing dhimmi govt. we have. What he has done here, with this "plea" is very shrewd. He has shown up the current government of Italy for the double dealing, immoral, anti Italian and anti Western entity which it is. He has forced them out into the open and showed their hand for them. He has used sarcasm and heavy irony.
He is just as disgusted as I am about the situation of duplicity which this government has displayed. He has written many articles before asking the leaders of Italy to be clear about where they want the country to stand: either with America or with the muslim terrorists. Not a sitting on the fence position which pleases no one, least of all many Italians like myself - ultimately because I know from past experience that islam just can't be befriended, it will always bite the hand that feeds it.
So with this article he has achieved the double stroke of ebarrassing this left wing government we have, and showing what sh*ts the western world has for journalists.
He is brilliant!
But alas, my country is not the only one with double standards:
Britain has no right to complain, when it suited them they gave shelter (and they still do) to all the worst islamic terrorists from Chechnya and elsewhere.
The U.S.? The Capitol and Congress are still lying to themselves (just like the rest of the Europeans and westerners) about the existence of a "moderate" islam that we can somehow deal with. And it has taken Bush 6 yes SIX years to put the words islam and fascism together.

But I won't give up hope that future generations of politicians will be less afraid of giving muslims their due. And I hope too that they will make those irresponsible journalists and broadcasting "services" pay for the needless deaths that they caused throught their deliberate ideological disinformation.

Sorry about this long rant.

You mean the entire letter was merely written in a tone of great sarcasm, meant not as a real appeal but to mock those who would say such things, to show up Prodi-D'Alema and so on? Is that what you maintain? Non c'e dubbio?

If you are right -- I'll keep checking the press and the RAI (perhaps "Porta a Porta" will have something on it, but last night on the show everyone, all the various journalists, one from Il Messaggero who was mea-culping about the Tortora case, another Cucuzza, another a good looking blonde who came in late, and even, for god's sake, the tartish Alessandra Mussolini, all of them talking about the case of the compromising photographs (car, prostitute -- possibly a transvestie -- exiting car) published of Sircana, government spokesman and therefore a VIP, who declared "Non mi dimetto. Voglio le foto pubblicate" just before checking into a hospital for the usual face-saving reasons, and the whole question of who and when and where privacy should respected (for the ordinary cittadini, and for those in public life), so only on the telegiornale did I see anything about Mastrogiacomo.

I'd love to believe you are right. I'd love to believe that I was wrong about Cossiga.

But right now I remain unconvinced.

If you have other evidence I should know about, please email it to Robert, and I'll be glad to learn of it, and rewrite what I have written. And I am fully prepared not merely for a mea-culpa, in the spirit of the editor from Il Messaggero on "Porta a Porta," but mea maxima culpa.

Until then, the final epithet stands.

ye hugh

What the F*** gives one rule for the jefes and another for us minions - do I take it that the rule that Robert stated yesterday about swearing has been relaxed if so - can i now state that the Itals always were a bunch of fuckin cowards - or have I just broke some other rules as well -
Maybe you should post the rules with a list of all the "bad" words that we cant use.

well if the whole thing is sarcasm it is brilliant. After reading that all I could think is thank God Oriana Fallaci is at peace and unable to see this. After re-reading it I can see that it's very possibly sarcasm just because its so absurd and just so far out there. Please post some links or evidence though to ease our minds!

“Maybe they could have put tracking devises on them some how to see what they are up too.”

Exactly what I was thinking. GPS chips like those inserted into pets or children for tracking purposes can be later honed in on with surface to surface missiles (SSM). Talk about ROI. Under no other condition should they have been released. That is unless Rosie-O says so.

Either way you wish to understand the letter. What Hugh threw into the Fan is splattering people who we can hardly call a Friend.

Who cares whether the letter from the near powerless "life-senator" Cossiga was capitulative or sarcastic?

The only fact that matters is that the Italians exchanged five Taleban operatives for one Italian journalist. Examples like this only weaken the position of the West in general, and emboldens those in the "camp of Islam".

It sets a bad precendent. Like Spain did, by their response to the Islamist attack, by voting out their current government.

Cossiga is a publicity hound who cannot settle into the role of elder statesman and seems to have spent the last fifteen years regressing not to childhood but to adolescence. And one has to wonder what kind of compensation one could offer him, if having been President and being Life Senator (Hugh, every former President is automatically Life Senator - alas) cannot satisfy his hunger for publicity and scandal. At his age, he is still out to shock the adults. The last I heard, he was demeaning the Partisan war against the Nazis, which he was old enough to remember; now he puts himself against the government of his country and talks complete nonsense about the army leadership threatening Prodi. He himself was once the CIA's man in Italy and involved in the "secret army" Gladio, which was supposed to overthrow the democratic government and impose a military dictatorship if the Communists ever came too close to the government; but considering that the six known attempts at a coup in the sixties and seventies were abject failures, I have to wonder whether the Americans had not - as usual - trusted the wrong guys. Now he of all people warns against possible American-backed coups in Italy - when that is not even an issue any more, if it ever was. I have no words for how contemptible is this man; the very thought that he was once my Head of State, in succession to the great Sandro Pertini, makes my stomach churn.

As for Prodi, I am no longer so sure he was not a Soviet agent. The best I can say is that if the whole purpose of his career were to place the Communists in government and keep them there, he could not have done it better. Now his government is presenting a bill to allow immigrants without citizenship the vote, which strongly suggests the classic pattern "we let you in and let you do what you want, you vote for us". It is certain that if an election were held now, the Left would be crushed - even though Berlusconi is still leading the opposition. Me, I have lost any hope I ever had in any part whatsoever of the rancid and purulent soup called the Italian political class. This treachery is the least to be expected of them.

once again we have the switching sides Italian style. NATO should not allow any more Italians, ie reporters, government officials into Afganistan,Iraq, that way Italy can possibly be embarrassed (if they can) and no more concessions to the Taliban. As long as US and other NATO allies lives are at risk, there cannot ever be any more compromises!

ZenaWarriorCreepstress, before you write any more racist filth, I would thank you to read this: http://fpb.livejournal.com/22050.html. Not that I imagine you think anyone but yourself has a right to be a patriot - if you did, you would not be the racist filth you are.

Paolo, racists filth? are not Italians European? where am l racists?. l was making a statement about governments who turn on their people. my appologies, l should of said "Italian government", the leftist swine ruling Italy should be turned over to the taliban. the "Italian government" is causing more trouble and grief with the US and its NATO forces by making deals with the Taliban. Where is this racist statement? l am predominately European, and to boot l even put down the French crappy government, l have not seen you call me a racists then. so you only call me a racist when l remark on the "Italian governent, your bravdo is misplaced.

and Paolo name calling only asserts you are pointless in your logic. you cannot attack my statement so then you attack me. l think that is what islamist like CAIR do quite well, you taking lessons?

So, Zannah or whatever, name-calling is OK for you but not for me? Suddenly you come over all civilized because I flung you a little of the hatred you flung at me and my fellow-countrymen? As the immortal Private used to say, they don't like it up them.

At the end of the day though I agree with Awake's post. No matter what Cossiga said or didn't say, the bottom line is that known terrorists have been freed and islam has once again been appeased in order to ransom one lousy politically correct western yankee hating journalist.

This trend has to stop.

And yet I can't help thinking what will happen in a few years' time when the muslims in my country and elsewhere in Europe will finally begin practicing true jihad like they have always wanted to, but didn't have the numbers to do until now. Europe is a pendulum, always has been - today politically correct, tomorrow the next dictator will bring blood on the streets.

I give it 5 years, after all, in France they have already had the first run at establishing little independent sharia-run caliphates, around Paris, have they not?

I love Italy and Italians. The problem is that the Italian Government have, at least twice, made deals with terrorists to free Italian journalists. The only ones who benefit from this are the two journalists and the terrorists. Civilization loses. All other Italian journalists are at increased risk as are Italian citizens since the terrorists know for sure that ransoming an Italian may result in freedom for their compatriots.

I sometimes wonder what would happen if the terrorists provided a verifiable, creditable threat to use a nuclear weapon or some other weapon of mass destruction on a US city unless some terrorist like KSM or Ramsi Yousef were not set free.

While I oppose capital punishment, keeping these terrorists in custody presents significant risks. Taking these people prisoner seems like a bad idea. Releasing them like the Italians have is even worse.

Me, I have lost any hope I ever had in any part whatsoever of the rancid and purulent soup called the Italian political class. This treachery is the least to be expected of them.

hey Paola, guess you got to go muslim now? just sit around and do nothing, ok . Italy is lost, and most of Western Europe.

"the Itals always were a bunch of fuckin cowards"

Every single one of them, of course, like the British, the Germans, the French,... (yawn). And we get this sort of thing after Robert's recent plea to avoid racism on this site!

Zena: your brain death and bigotry make you a prime candidate for conversion to Islam. We will meet when I am carrying a gun for my country again - however old I am by then - and you are following the perverted lights of your bigotry into Allah's hell.

"the Itals always were a bunch of fuckin cowards"
hey Paola, you nothing to say about this guy above who posted this thread? your actions are typical of a Euroweinnie, pick up a gun, where did you find it
in a toy store?
your enemy are the islamist muslims in your backyard
Paola. your fight is with them, but then your actions are like a leftist, you cannot fight the real enemy and you pick on someone who is saying the truth about the "Italian government" and your elites like all elites are selling out. The actions of the "Italian government are traitorous, and therefore they should be kicked out of Afganistan and Iraq, and any other place NATO is fighting. You cannot agree their actions make the lives of our soldiers at risk? or are you thinned skin, so stick that gun where the sun dont shine.

Looks like the Italian government is reading from the French government's tactic manual.
