"Victory for Free Expression at San Francisco State University: No Punishment for Stepping on Hamas, Hezbollah Flags," a FIRE Press Release updating this story:
SAN FRANCISCO, March 20, 2007—In a crucial victory for free expression, San Francisco State University (SFSU) announced yesterday that its College Republicans will face no punishment for hosting an anti-terrorism rally at which participants stepped on makeshift Hezbollah and Hamas flags. SFSU’s decision comes after months of pressure from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), national and local media, and the public—all of which called on the school to uphold the students’ constitutionally guaranteed right to free expression.“We are relieved that SFSU has come to its senses and recognized that it cannot punish students for constitutionally protected expression,” FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. “But the fact remains that the university should never have investigated or tried them in the first place. This was a protected act of political protest and it is impossible to believe the university did not know that from the start.”
SFSU’s shameful attack on free expression began after an October 17, 2006 anti-terrorism rally at which several members of the College Republicans stepped on pieces of paper they had painted to resemble Hamas and Hezbollah flags. Unbeknownst to the protestors, the flags they had copied contained the word “Allah” written in Arabic script. On October 26, a student filed a formal complaint with the university against the College Republicans, alleging “attempts to incite violence and create a hostile environment” and “actions of incivility.” Although university administrators could have settled the matter informally or dismissed the charges outright, the university instead chose to press forward with a hearing on the charges.
FIRE wrote to SFSU President Robert A. Corrigan on January 23, 2007, to stress that no American public institution can lawfully prosecute students for engaging in political protest or for desecrating religious symbols. SFSU replied to FIRE’s letter on January 29 by saying that the university would continue to investigate the complaint. When SFSU scheduled a hearing for March 9, FIRE immediately wrote to President Corrigan again to urge him to call off the hearing. Undeterred by clearly established constitutional jurisprudence, SFSU went forward with the hearing as scheduled. President Corrigan then responded to FIRE on March 13, once again standing by the university’s disciplinary process.
Yesterday afternoon, President Corrigan wrote to FIRE with the welcome news that “the Student Organization Hearing Panel (SOHP) unanimously concluded that the College Republicans organization had not violated the Student Code of Conduct and that there were no grounds to support the student complaint lodged against them.”
... a student filed a formal complaint with the university against the College Republicans, alleging “attempts to incite violence and create a hostile environment”
In other words, do something that might less than totally please the hostile and violence prone Moslems in the Bay Area --- which is to say all Moslems there.
Good.
What kind of 'university' is STFU? i.e. where does their money come from?
Maybe there is something to be said for allowing the process to go forward in were the students(Student Organization Hearing Panel (SOHP)) are given an opportunity to end up upholding the constitutional protected free speech of the College republicans'.
The important issue here is that if there is a complaint issued by Conservative students or the College Republicans on a similar matter containing the same concerns such as, alleging “attempts to incite violence and create a hostile environment” and “actions of incivility.” Then will the administrations officials, and President Corrigan allow for the same process that was perpetrated towards the College Republicans?
Major universities tend to tolerate liberal, and leftwing ideologists all the time; never mind the leftist professors that are holding tenure at universities such as Ward Churchill and that UCLA educated Muslim convert professor at Kent state to name 2 out of hundreds in the university system.--- Follow the Saudi money trail in many cases-----

Gaah, if only my printer got hooked up before I left home (We moved recently). Because I would love to tape the Hamas and Hizballah flags to my shoes and also wear that John Doe Sue Me badge. Oh well.
Now if only something could be done about the courses, and the faculty, and the general level of literacy.
From the article: "SFSU’s shameful attack on free expression began after an October 17, 2006 anti-terrorism rally at which several members of the College Republicans stepped on pieces of paper they had painted to resemble Hamas and Hezbollah flags. Unbeknownst to the protestors, the flags they had copied contained the word “Allah” written in Arabic script."
So the College Republicans claimed ignorance of Allah being written on the 'flags'. So what? Even if they did know 'Allah' was written on the flags, their desecration is still protected speech in the US, although the University would most likely see it different in deference to the violence-prone muslim student community. This decision is a Pyrrhic Victory at best.
Finally some sanity. If these universities uphold the "right" to burn an American flag, then they better give equal rights to those who want to burn a Hamas flag as well.
word to the moslems: S.T.F.U.!!
It took months to decide this???
S.T.F.U. and Muslims ought to be blaming Hamas and Hezbollah for “desecrating” their “Allah” — associating their deity to terrorism — in the first place,
Dane asks: "What kind of 'university' is STFU?"
These days, with all the speech codes and "sensitivity" constraints, virtually all liberal arts universities are STFU. :-)
But seriously, Dane, it's SFSU, not STFU. They only act like it's STFU. :-)
Here's some free expression for y'all. I've got a new piece of software that can take a source text and produce random texts based on it, reflecting its basic content and structure. I wondered what it would make of the Qur'an. So I fed it Pickthal's translation of Sura 9, and asked for a 200 word composition. Here's what I got:
Now, as our apologist friends will tell you this is not desecration because the Qur'an cannot be translated, so you can do what you like with the English text. I can't read Arabic, but I'm told that it has a highly alliterative poetic style, and I've heard Arab speakers reciting, and I thought perhaps we can give it a bit of rap-music feel. So I fed the resulting text through a "Jive-talk" filter and then through a "Valley-Girl" filter for good measure. What I got, I think, must be pretty close to the original...
Just thought I'd share it with all you connoisseurs. Hope nobody's offended
:-)
(I shared this text in an earlier site, but it got eaten by the DhimmiWatch gremlins...)
These College Republicans should now take a leaf out of the Flying Imams' book an issue a counter-complaint against the student who filed the original complaint.
They won't, I imagine, because that would be tantamount to victimisation of the student in question; it would also be vindictive and futile.
But it would be a good publicity stunt and a fine way to score a political point at the expense of those disgusting imams.
You people pride yourselves in freedom of speech? Where is it now that some maniac is on the rampage deleting my comments? Maybe afterall you need to see a psychologist to tell you that its indeed YOU who is opposed to freedom of expression rather than the MUSLIM.
Maybe you are tempted to delete this one too??? Feel free, oppressed westerners. Caged in self-denial and self-worship
Speech in the USA is not free.
It was paid for with the blood of men
who resisted to the death an evil tyranny.
Are you refering to the British? You think the Brits whom you owe your existance to are tyranical? oh gosh
Absolutely wonderful. Must be very satisfying to burn a HAMAS or Hizbollah flag after all the times we've watched the American flag being stomped and burned.
As a first time poster to this site, I find myself a little confused at the shock that a lib school would have a "dhimmi mentality". What, all of a sudden they are going to have the scales fall from their eyes, and not have a "progressive", the enemy of the right is my friend, world view? These people have been indoctrinated into this "Hate America"/"Blame America" way of life the same as the people of the ME/MSA.
The student organizations now know that if they are not muslim they are subject to disciplinary review by the university administration. In a nutshell, They(the college admin.) just told the College Republicans,"We've got our eye on you!"
On a separate note, I say it's time to take a more proactive roll. Start calling these muslim student assoc. on their never ending "taqiyya" and "kitman". It is high time that they are confronted with their own words.
Well done. Now could you just have a word about academic freedom with our own dhimmis in the UK at Clare College Cambridge and Leeds? (see Melanie Phillips at

Alhamdo Li'llah!!! I am an SFSU graduate (2003) and I FINALLY have a reason to be proud of that fact. The school's reputation is poor given it is in between UC Berkeley and Stanford ... so, it is not exactly known as an intellectual powerhouse in the Bay Area.
Hey Patrick
Being between UC Berzerkely and Stanford? Isn't that like being between a rockhead and a hard left? Just askin
A study of American history
is in order for abdullah, slave of allah,
if he can put down his koran,

to the baal melech
who lives on the blood of innocents,
who condones and sacralizes slavery,
wife beating, misogny, and the killing of kufir.
Dang. I was looking forward to reading Justice Alito's opinion on SFSU's newly-invented blasphemy laws, as undoubtedly upheld by the Ninth Circus.
In the Bible when the angel Gabriel spoke to people they were afraid at first, but Gabriel comforted them.
Mohammad's reaction to the angel Gabriel, was that he thought he was going mad, he perspired, was anxious and afraid. Mohammad had to push away his fear to return to the cave. Did the angel ever try to comfort him as he had done in the past?
Wasn't it his wife that comforted him?
Was it Gabriel or Satan that spoke to Mohammad?
pvb,
I vote neither. Old Mo just made the stuff up based upon incomplete knowledge of the Bible (Jewish and Christian), Arab myths, the pagan religion that Mohammed and his tribe practiced, plus some stuff just thrown in so he could justify his rape and pillage routine.
Whether it's the moon god, gabriel or mo's inner child speaking,it's a vile and loathsome collection of perverted material.
These "college Republicans" should just be glad they're not Frenchmen in Yemen:

Meanwhile:
Is it just a co-incidence that eveny time a pigeon craps it looks like the name of "Allah"?
Hmmm?
This is a good sign that idiots like Mr.Hooper
and Mr.Awad will finally start to get a real taste of "Backlash" , sure obese slobs like Moore can mock 9/11 and make Saddam out to be
a victim from the Bush Conspiracy to make 9/11 look like Muslims did it , but , far too many tangible battles on American soil are being waged by Islamofacists in our Schools and Airports .
Most people I know are accepting and tolerant of some verbal abuse or attack on their values , but CAIR is really pushing the issue
and if the Courts fail to protect innocent civilians from foreign malitias in America , We The People will respond to defend Freedom and Democracy because Sharia law and Islam has only brought poverty and harm to almost every nation where it dominates.
Backlash Mr.Hooper?????????
You aint seen nothing yet my friend , you made such a big deal over making sure people knew a Mosque was in their area that you never realized that when the next 9/11 happens from your Jihadist
buddies the gloves will come off and those Mosques won't be so save after you incited a reaction by denying islam or Muslims are connected to it.
This isn't a threat Hooper, it's a warning that we in the west may appear soft and easy to push over , that's because some Hills aren't worth dying for but at one point you'll pick the wrong hill to assume it can be claimed for Allah and islam.
Well, even a broken watch is right twice a day.
Hey Abby, relax. They're too busy here to delete your stuff. As I mention in my post a couple before yours, there appears to be some software glitch on the reader postings at DhimmiWatch and some get randomly deleted.
Don't feel bad, I've been deleted too, but I can't imagine that anyone would have done so deliberately as my postings are very respectful. In fact, if you scroll up to my posting (or textsearch "qur'an") you'll see how innocuous my most recently deleted posting was ... Anyway, I reposted it here, so no big deal.
Whatever the cause of the DhimmiWatch gremlins, I assure you they are equal opportunity deleters.
"Caged in self-denial and self-worship..."
Excuse me, Abdullah, but please may I ask you to explain these strange observations?
One of the core themes of Dhimmi Watch is the extent to which western countries indulge in self-loathing.
Far from worshipping themselves, western governments and institutions appear more intent on worshipping at the altar of multiculturalism; and craven subservience to Islamist bullyboys is merely one consequence of this new 'faith'.
Hence the creation of Dhimmi Watch.
As for us being 'caged in self-denial', that is really quite a weird comment that demands further explanation.
I mean, how precisely are we denying our own wishes and desires? By refusing to eat too much cheese? By voting for George Bush rather than Al Gore?
I thought that when a certain Ayatollah proclaimed that 'there is no joy in Islam', he was - after a fashion - alluding to the joys of 'self-denial' (and other beautiful things) associated with this great religion?
By stark contrast, Islamists claim, we in the West are decadent and immoral.
But how can we be 'caged in self-denial', I wonder?
For a country or political group to claim that its flag is entitled to special treatment, more so than anyone else's flag, because they happen to have planted the name of their god on it, is a patent absurdity. Muslims seem to have lost touch with the elementary instinct that tells a person when they are making fools of themselves. Having said that, the Germans did cave in last summer and removed the Iranian and Saudi flags from outside a brothel, while leaving the flags of all the other football world cup participants in place.
You people pride yourselves in freedom of speech? Where is it now that some maniac is on the rampage deleting my comments? Maybe afterall you need to see a psychologist to tell you that its indeed YOU who is opposed to freedom of expression rather than the MUSLIM.

Whya stop at flag stomping????
If the National Endowment for the Arts can fund someone who "artistically" expresses themselves by placing a cross in a beaker of urine, the least we can do is "artistically" express our selves by according the artifacts of other religions, including Islam, the same "artistic" expression and respect.

Hey I hadn't heard about that and I did not see any demos/marches/media hostility to it .. it must have been colorfully praiseworthy.
So as an entry for the Turner Prize how about a parcel of pig's excrement wrapped in a series of Muslim national flags overlaying a parchment listing and defining Sharia law?
Wonder what reactions that would arouse mongst paid up members of the loony left multicultural society!
Some forms of flag descecration are more equal than others?
Interesting.
From Infidel33 above-
" Dang. I was looking forward to reading Justice Alito's opinion on SFSU's newly-invented blasphemy laws, as undoubtedly upheld by the Ninth Circus. ..."
With all our new Brit and Aussie friends we may need to explain a few local "isms", like "Ninth Circus". Permit me me do the honors.
The 9th Circus refers to the unelected (appointed) Ninth Circuit Court of the US, which "governs" the Western US (or rather, the circus judges like to think they govern the Western US). They are a hold-over collection of Socialist/Commies from the Cold War. All the kooks, perverts, and Muzzies like to bring their lawsuits to the 9th Circus since they know they will get a "fair" hearing and the other guy will get clammed.
The 9th Circus has a record of being the most overturned court in the country (by higher courts), as most of their rulings are un-constitutional.
You can bet that at some point in time the Muzzies will try to get Sharia past the 9th Circus. And they will likely win their case!
How could this action ever get off the ground?
When you see Iranians and Palestinians busy burning the Stars & Stripes, what the hell is going on when a University attempts to ban a milder reciprocal action?
Americans are well within their rights to burn the flags and chant, "Death to Hamas", "Death to Iran"
Abdullah,
All of us have had posts eaten by the gremlins. Even Hugh, who is a director at JW/DW wrote that some of his posts vanished. If you're looking for other Muslim posters here, there are many. Haidon comes to mind. Then there is the widow Naseem.
Hey, heres an idea... maybe Naseem can become one of your four wives and you two can make a baby jihadist to kill all us evil infidels.
