LEWISTON - One student has been suspended and more disciplinary action could follow a possible hate crime at Lewiston Middle School, Superintendent Leon Levesque said Wednesday.On April 11, a white student placed a ham steak in a bag on a lunch table where Somali students were eating. Muslims consider pork unclean and offensive.
The act reminded students of a man who threw a pig's head into a Lewiston mosque last summer.
The school incident is being treated seriously as "a hate incident," Levesque said. Lewiston police are investigating, and the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence is working with the school to create a response plan.
"We've got some work to do to turn this around and bring the school community back together again," Levesque said.
Placing ham where Muslim students were eating was "an awful thing," said Stephen Wessler, executive director of the Center for Prevention of Hate Violence. "It's extraordinarily hurtful and degrading" to Muslims, whose religion prohibits them from being around ham. It's important to respond swiftly, Wessler said.
"Incidents like this that involve degrading language or conduct are often said by the perpetrator as a joke. I know that conduct is never static," he said. "It's part of a process of escalation."
If people think insulting Muslims with ham is OK, "More degrading acts will follow, until at some point we'll end up having violence," Wessler said.

The incident does not reflect the moral values of the school staff and students, Levesque said. "We need to take a look at this and review how a careless act is degrading and causes hurt to other people. All our students should feel welcome and safe in our schools."He said a letter would be sent home to parents explaining what happened and outlining the school's response. 'I didn't feel safe'
A 14-year-old Somali boy, whose mother asked that his name not be published, said he was eating lunch with four other Somali students on April 11. He noticed many others in the cafeteria "standing up, looking at us."
One boy came near, began laughing and threw a bag on the table while other students laughed and said, 'Good job.'"
"We didn't know what was in this bag," the boy said. "One of my friends reached inside it. It was a big ham steak. There were five of us at the table, all Somali. It was intended for us."
The boy said he looked up at students he thought were his friends. "I felt angered, offended."
He suddenly felt like he was alone. "At the school the next day, I didn't feel safe. I felt like everybody was against me. Before I felt like I fit in, and everything was normal."
He began to think white students didn't like him, and the act was their way of letting him know.
On Thursday, several students came up to him and said, "Those guys who did it were jerks. I apologize for them, and I hope you feel better."
The boy said they did make him feel better. "But for the rest of my life when I remember middle school, this will pop up right away."
You know, I hated middle school too. Children treated each other horribly every day. I remember one time some idiot spit into sandwich of some guy who had walked away from the table. It it is an age at which children can be especially cruel and brutal. But the sandwich-spitter was the same race as his victim, and it was a (marginally) saner time, so that story didn't end up in the newspaper.
This culture of softness and victimization is no good for anyone. Obviously we are on the way to treating Muslims as a privileged class, around whom everyone else must tiptoe, so that they are protected from all possible offense, even offenses committed by boorish prankster schoolchildren.
I also wonder if these Somali students would prefer a ham steak on their table, or life in Mogadishu. As I recall there were incidents in Nazi Germany in which Jews were beaten and forced to eat bacon. Those were hate crimes. Ham steak on a table in a lunchroom? Come on.
Regarding this being a "hate crime": by the common definition of "hate crime", there needs to be an underlying crime. Placing ham on a lunch room table is not, in itself, a crime. If somebody put a ham steak in a bag on the table of a group of Christian kids, it would not be any sort of offense. If some people are offended by ham, then that's their problem

I went to a school system with a larger than average Jewish population, nothing, nothing like this ever happened. I agree with Robert, those were saner times. They were also the times before everyone wore their feelings on their shirtsleeves and before the victim industry was founded. I did not know some of these kids were Jews until after I had known them for more than a year.

Will it be a series of decisions by the school board that Muslim students really do need foot washes in the bathrooms, a separate prayer room in the school, separate gym and swimming times for Muslim girls and halal meals in the lunchroom? And, as rewards for their Muslim parents, removal of any liquor stores in town, removal of dogs from infidels' back yards, removal of church bells from churches and a call to prayer from huge speakers coming from all directions of the city? Although I don't approve of this sort of teasing, I do agree it is really no crime. The student that did this should be made to right "I will not waste perfectly good pork" on the board a hundred times. As he gets older he will likely find more productive ways to voice his opinion.
What's beginning to really burn my shorts is this "Sensitivity" bull crap. Oh... these poor people are so sensitive. We have to protect them like small children and shield them from all the bad things us westerners do. Being from Minnesotastan, my children have several Somalians in their school. Are some things the Muslims consider unclean more or less unclean than other things? Pork is unclean, non-muslims are unclean. A priority list? Are Somali Muslims different than other Muslims, that they can have non-Muslim friends? Would lists of inappropriate behavior/language be necessary for Muslims of different nationalities? 1. Tax them at the highest rate of any State in the Nation. Give about two thirds of the money to the victims in the form of welfare and medical benefits. Make sure benefits are among the most generous in the nation so that many more victims will move to town.
2. Tax the parents’ employers as well so they will move jobs out of State and make it hard for the judgmental parents to find work. The money from the parent’s employers should also be given to the victims in the form of welfare and medical benefits.
3. Make it completely impossible for college graduates to find rewarding work near the judgmental parents with the goal of seperating families.
4. Make the value of the judgmental parents’ housing plummet.
That should do for starters. Bad parents.
There is only one solution. The offender must be publicly beheaded to appease moon God Allah. Then these muslim students will feel safer and middle school will be a grand experience they can remember for their life. Ah..the tales they can tell their grandchildren.

I think it was over 10 years ago (must have been before Halal meat shops), when a group of Muslims caused a huge uproar -- it was about hamburger. The Muslims bought hamburger from a well-known grocery chain, and something didn't look right (?). Anyway, they had it analyzed. And it came back with traces of pork. There were endless accusations -- conspiracy theories, was this a trick, was this being done maliciously? The hamburger was not 100 percent beef as promised -- so the grocery chain had lawsuits threatened, boycotts, etc. etc. The up-shot was that it was discovered that the butcher had failed to clean the meat grinder (in-between grinding some pork, then grinding some beef)...he had thought he had cleaned the grinder sufficiently, but he hadn't, so traces of pork were found. (The store's procedures were then altered, beef was ground first, followed by pork -- everyone knew that the Infidels would not start a huge fuss upon discovery that their pork products were, ever so slightly, contaiminated with beef.)
Also, it's always the Infidels who must accommodate the Muslims. Seldom is it the other way around. The Infidels learn to be good little Dhimmis.

Some business associates invited me today to see the motivational movie, The Secret, and it was a real eye opener. The Secret teaches about the law of attraction. And I kept thinking about this concept regarding Muslims and Islam. We here are fighting against Islam and we seem to keep getting more of it. What I think we need to do is to think about how we want are society to be and attract more of that, rather than think so much on how we can defeat Islam because we are still thinking about Islam and whatever we think about we get.
I'm going to visualize a society where eating a ham sandwiche isn't a crime; where people will let you in the right hand lane when you've got to get over and no one honks at you or flips you the bird; where people cherish mom, baseball and apple pie; where girls can dress cute and be appreciated and walk the streets in safety, not worrying about attacks by Middle Eastern men; where we respect each others' opinions even if we don't agree and where we defend each other's rights to peaceful enjoyment of our homes, mutual respect for others and protection of each others' rights.
One thing that the Muslims don't get is that the more they whine about their ridiculous demands masquerading as rights being trampled on, according to the law of attraction, the more trampling they're going to get. I can't see this as a hate crime. The 12 year olds involved thought that this was hilarious. There are a lot of wrong things that 12 year olds think is hilarious.
Yes, the same kind of jokes have been played on Jews. Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry's girlfriend (played by Courtney Cox) walks in on George while he was naked. Many people have commented that this story is not a big deal and should not have been on the front page of the newspaper. I partly agree, though I would add that it is an important story in that it reports yet another incident, another symptom, in the creeping Islamization of various pockets of North America, and is important in this respect. This creeping Islamization is the result of our governments' stupidity, all throughout the western world, of (a) allowing in immigrants who are determined to violate our laws and values in order to establish their own laws and values, and (b) our governments' and some citizens' active but often unwitting cooperation in overturning our laws and values in the interests of accomodating the immigrants' laws and values.

Interesting, though not surprising, that this prank is being portrayed as race-related. From what I can see from the article, there was nothing racial about it, just a prank with a ham in relation to one of Islam's taboos.
There was however a racial prejudice by the Somali student, who used this as an opportunity to make--and with the newspaper's help, express publicly--a judgement about all the white students based on what one white student (and perhaps a few of his friends) did. He implied that he would maintain this attitude toward whites, even after some other white students, who were not involved with the prank, apologized on behalf of the prankster. (Though it was not necessary, nor even appropriate, for students who were not involved in the prank to apologize. It's one thing to condemn the prank, quite another to apologize for someone else's prank).

[1]. From a moral standpoint, it was not an awful thing. It was not a nice thing; it was insensitive, the boy should apologize, and so on, but not awful. It is rather like tossing a rubber snake at the feet of a person you know is squeamish about snakes. Many (not all) Muslims have ham-o-phobia: an irrational and disproportionate fear/aversion to ham. Hence they become targets for these kinds of pranks. In western society, people who have phobias are often the butt of jokes. Also in western society, people who precariously position a chip on the shoulder, daring others to knock it off, often encounter situations wherein other people accept the dare and want to knock off the chip. Sometimes the chip falls off all by itself and its carrier blames anyone who happens to be present when it falls. Prophet Muhammad had set up Islam so that Muslims would have all these phobias and chips on the shoulder so that whenever the Muslims came into contact with other people there would be conflict and division, unless and until the non-Muslims submitted to Muhammad's code of conduct.

...in a sane world of course* non-Muslims would be teaching Muslims to overcome their ham-o-phobia, not teaching non-Muslims to be "sensitive to" and to "respect" ham-o-phobia. That doesn't mean that Muslims have to like ham, just that they need to learn to stop having such irrational, disproportionate reactions toward it.

Why have these Somali students not been taught about the use of pranks in relation to "sacred cows" (or pigs) in western culture? Don't they need "cultural sensitivity training"?* It doesn't mean that they have to like or even approve of the prank. It would just mean that they should (a) recognize a prank as a prank--and not a sinister racist plot--when it occurs, and (b) not have any excuse to launch frivolous complaints directed at chiseling away at western culture and toward draining the valuable time and resources of its members.

This ham incident is a minor symptom, a small test case if you will, that illustrates what happens when Islamic supremacism (including sharia prohibitions re ham, among many other rules) combines with western PC accomodations: Sharia is established incrementally while western civilization is eroded incrementally.

Hate crime? I know all about hate crimes, those that are committed against non-moslems every day. I've heard so much more than I ever wanted to hear about them. I never thought this shi'ite would follow me across the sea. I am a walking talking hate crime against moslems. I will be one until the day I die.
An incident from my youth: we were directed to provide a baked dessert for a fund-raiser at my high school. I ran with the wrong crowd and we decided to create a meat-cake. It was made of Dunkin-Hines mix and hamburger.
The cake was put on the table and we peered through the kitchen window to see if someone would eat it. An Asian-Indian woman was the first and a friend hovered around her as she tasted it. There was no intent to offend the Hindu religion as we were 100% ignorant of anything outside of our Midwestern town.
The lady took a bite, spit out the meat-cake, looked at it, and said “I’ve eaten my ancestors!” We were rolling in the kitchen as the story was relayed from the hoverer. As I’ve learned more about the world, I feel pretty bad about what we did to that woman.
The story didn’t make the High School paper. We didn't mean to offend and the woman didn't have an agenda. But then again, that was the better part of twenty years ago.

I'm sick and tired of watching my customs, values, traditions, religion,religious symbols and the sense of comfort and well being that these things bring, those that we have toiled and died for, being usurped and washed away because some immigrant couldn't stand his own country any longer so came here to change mine.

Couldn't post there myself (technical glitch), but wanted to add that there seems to be great confusion, nearly endemic to the Left, about loose concepts of "hatred" and "racism". The topic of the most active Islamic fronts in the modern world has nothing to do with "race" and hatred is irrelevant. It is simply a matter of an appropriate level of concern or even fear in that regard, and the consideration of what is the most effective response. Apparently tolerance and multiculturalism works to block those survival receptors in the brains of the politically correct.
Someone put some quotes from the koran. And someone who knew the kid who put the bag on the table explained that the child was himself bullied into doing what he did and he was autistic and as a minor should not have had his name or story in the paper.
All the comments have been removed though the article remains.
This is a CLASSIC example of why I despise the direction this country is taking!! "Politically Correct" is just a synonym for "Communism"!!!

I missed this story here, but saw it on Lou Dobbs tonight. I think he said something about the attorney general being called on to consider prosecution.
Frankly, I find what the kids did funny. The reaction by authorities, however, is anything but. What? We live in an Islamic theocracy now! Did we leave our conviction to assimilate the intolerant and intolerable? When did the feelings of little kids, and alien ones at that, become a priority for law enforcement! So what if a little kid is called a pouppee head Muslim? If they can’t live with it, deport them and all those that are the same! We live in Christian countries, and as such, many things go!
If I want to eat a ham sandwich beside a Muslim, I will! We are not people of the absurd! When did the superstitions of others become a matter of value! Look at the world around you where the Islamic way of life is reigning endless havoc. This is not us! We don’t want it to be us!
People…. Contact the ACLU, the authorities, the educators, the everybody! And put a stop to this hypocritical stupid madness.
