Iran announces "industrial" nuclear fuel work

1938 Alert. More on this story, by Parisa Hafezi for Reuters:

NATANZ, Iran (Reuters) - Iran announced on Monday it had begun industrial-scale nuclear fuel production in a fresh snub to the U.N. Security Council, which has imposed two rounds of sanctions on it for refusing to halt such work.
The announcement marks a shift from experimental atomic fuel work involving a few hundred centrifuges used for enriching uranium to a process that will involve thousands of machines.
Western nations fear this will bring Tehran closer to what they say is its aim of building atomic bombs. Iran, the world's fourth largest oil exporter, insists it only wants the fuel for generating electricity so it can export more of its oil and gas.

However, the uranium they are enriching is not suitable for the Russian nuclear power plant currently under construction.

"I proudly announce that as of today Iran is among the countries which produce nuclear fuel on an industrial scale," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a gathering at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran.
Washington swiftly denounced the declaration, saying it was a further sign Iran was defying the international community.
Iran, which announced a year ago it had produced its first tiny batch of enriched uranium, had said it would install 3,000 centrifuges as a first stage towards "industrial-scale" output.
Chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying Iran had "reached the capacity of 3,000". Asked if feedstock uranium gas had been injected into them, he told reporters: "Yes, we have injected gas."
Diplomats previously said Iran had set up a third of the 3,000 machines but had not introduced feedstock. An Iranian official told ISNA news agency U.N. inspectors who routinely visit would confirm centrifuge numbers in 20 days' time.
Analysts say Iran has used such announcements of atomic progress in the past to strengthen its bargaining position with the West, but that such statements have often glossed over technical glitches they say have plagued Iran's nuclear work.
Iran aims to build 54,000 centrifuges, which spin at high speeds to produce fuel for power plants or, if it is enriched further, bombs. With 3,000, Iran could make enough material for a bomb in one year if it wanted to, Western experts say.

Yeah, I guess they think plutonium will help make their nuclear reactors operate more efficiently... Kinda' like using gasoline on the barbecue pit...

Cheers,

Well, one could say things are "spinning" out of control.

This could be compared with the militarization of the Rhineland. A lot depends on the reaction of the "International Community" now. Don't hold your breath, kids..

Another 1938 alert! When is it going to be 1939 already?

It has been a game of "push the west to attack us" the whole time, which would justify his own intent to his peers.
We've denied him that, as we know it's what he's counting on...we're denying that to him...
...in the mean time his economy is a shambles, gasoline rationing and such-in a nataion awash in oil (a really big clue), 70% of the people hate his guts, especially since poutting down over 60,000 protests by the opposition last year- with LIVE ammo, et. al....
...his top dogs defected (that would be like Himmler defecting from nazi germany), complete with names dates times places, gps, tactics and entire logisitcal layout and battle plans of his government (that also includes the LACK of armament they DON'T really have, which is why the demonstration of pseudo-power in mindplay), forcing the munckin into a violent vitriolic hitleresque tirade behind the scenes (the kidnapping was merely a result of that since he had to save SOME ego/face)...

It's now become a play for time...how long can he keep this game up, while being denied the one thing he has been (now desperately) provoking: an attack by the west...while his economt heads south, causing even more hardships on his own people (like Armies, they also live/die/travel on their stomachs)...
"$64,000 question" is simple: which one will break first?

That's exactly what this scenario has become.
Who will blink first.

"Washington swiftly denounced the declaration, saying it was a further sign Iran was defying the international community."

When will people get it through their heads that there is NO "international community". This utopian ideal is foolish. We have friends, allies, people of common interest etc but this idea that there is some grand government above like UN is silly.

Iran is defying the "international community" because they know no such beast exist. When will we wake up an realize the same thing.

We spend billions and billions of dollars on the CIA and other intellengence agencies, and we still can't seem to gather enough brains together to figure out how to eliminate Ahmadinejad or his nuclear program.

He's going to get his bomb, and we can be certain of it.

How do we return Iran to it's Hay Day?

Boom- goes the Electricity

Boom- goes the Gas

Boom- goes the Water

No point in making them suffer the lifestyle of Infidels.

Does anyone know if there are enough of the proper Animals in Iran who's excrement can be consumed to sustain them?

To me, this savours of bluff. The rumours of growing economic crisis within Iran, their apparent inability to synthetize enough fuel for their own internal needs (a matter of the most serious military importance), and the withdrawal of the Russian experts who had been helping them along, strongly suggests that, whether or not the Pakistani Khan syndicate helps them, they have nowhere near the resources and qualified manpower required to work the "thousands of machines". At the back of this lies the terror that the US might select Iran for the next bout of regime change: Iran is trying to make the rest of us think that it would be a bad idea to make war against them.

54,000 divided by 3,000 equals 18 bombs a year. Throw in some chemical capability for spice. Dow Chemical goes Islamic?

However, the uranium they are enriching is not suitable for the Russian nuclear power plant currently under construction.

I shudder to think if the waste produced during the trials is suitable for dirty bombs in Iraq and elsewhere.

Denounce Criticize Complain Censure Condemn: useless diplomatic words that mean absolutely nothing because nothing will be done until it is too late.

It is time President Bush told the Europeans that it is either going to be a lucky few shots by Iran using their SS warheads they purchased from the Soviet Union which will kill several hundred thousand in a counterstrike to America taking out this menace or it is going to be millions dying and the world existing under Islamocommunist nuclear blackmail.

If Iran can not be stopped within the next 3 months by insurgent hits and the government toppled, then Iran must be hit with 10 to 20 tactical nuclear warheads on cruise missiles to so cripple that state it can not launch the counterstrike.

If the U.S.S. Eisenhower doesn't steam straight back to port when the Nimitz arrives in the Persian Gulf, the Iranian mullahs and Ahmanutjob are going to have serious bladder-control problems.

Anyone have an accurate ETA on the Nimitz? I have only found this:

"Nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz will sail Monday to support US operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US Navy said, amid a spike in tensions over Iran's seizure of 15 British marines and sailors.

The Nimitz, and its battle group of destroyers and guided missile cruisers, will relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which this week took part in war games exercises in the Gulf with another carrier, USS John S Stennis.

The new battle group will be in position by late-to-mid April, but there will be no overlap with the Eisenhower, and the number of US carriers in the area would stay at two, a navy official said on condition of anonymity."

As if the Navy is going to say -- "Yeah, we intend to keep 3 carriers prepped for the upcoming assault on Iran's centrifuges."

yes, foe...but only "on station" "after Sunday" (read that as easter sunday).
No details given (though we know them)...unofficial of course.

After all, when you have a nuclear powered ship, less than 100,000 tons, with 2 reactors, maxing out 550,000 shaft horsepower, and capable of flank speed indefinitely, and doesn't need a headwind to launch their aircraft...well, the math tells the tale. (you should see them during shakedown workouts).

The rest of the fleet will be on station by next weekend...and a 4th available for "incidental operation" if needed within 48 hours on top of that. ;-)

@jcom972:

Thanks for that info. I figured the estimates in that article were pretty off.

Hitler built submarines for years in defiance of bans imposed in WWI....and no one cared....

....hundreds of ships and thousands of lives were later lost.....

...deja vu........

"insists it only wants the fuel for generating electricity so it can export more of its oil and gas."

....and Iran only want the very latest in Soviet missles to guard againt wild camels.....

Maybe those hostages almost stumbled on to something! Mark Steyn right they should of fought at that time! Now Sadr deterrent for when we focus on the nuclear fuel Sadr will hit! Maybe Nato should have checked what did make it into Iran!

Looks like this situation is slipping away from our grasp. An emasculated Britain and incompetent US Administration unable to respond because of the Iraqi debacle.

We need leaders of fortitude who will cease the hot air and take unequivocal action.

He has some interesting thoughts, one being that Iranian oil is a powerful protector of the regime. Talk about no blood for oil!
Overall, I think Islam is in a much stronger position than Communism ever was. For one thing, it is not anti-business and therefore avoids alienating that influential constituency. For another, while it opposes all other religions, the only significant religious opposition comes from the Religious Right; many liberal churches are very naive.

Can't wait to read their Nuclear-Powered Koran.

Then there's Lloyd Bridges in "Airplane" who, when asked if they should turn on the runway landing lights for the former single-prop dogfight pilot trying to land a commercial jet, replies:

"No. That's just what they'll be expecting us to do!".

Now picture Bush with the same reply when asked if the US should take military action to prevent Iran from acquiring the bomb and you have some inkling of the trouble we're in.

Looks like Pamela is in mighty good company.
Who are you if you don't have a fatwa?
/FBI, are you paying attention?

Damn, Foehammer, what are you, chopped liver? Not fatwaworthy, indeed!

Damn, now I have to be fatwa-worthy? Just when I thought sexy and smart was enough...

Interestinconundrum,
If you don’t have a fatwa slapped on you, you ain’t tryin!
Faster than a speeding fatwa, more powerful than an islamist meat monger, it’s a bird, it’s a plane… no its supergirrrl.
Foehammer, I have been visiting your site, its coming dont worry.

Tgusa-- thanks for posting that.

I guess we should be flattered, though I wonder if the pro-jihad blogger realizes for how many people the "fatwaworthy" label brings to mind the "spongeworthy" episode of Seinfeld...

Seems there are plenty of uninhabited desert areas in Iran that would be ideal test beds for one of our lowest level tactical nukes. Can anyone tell me where the suggestion box is?

Imagine, this article is for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff!

The Russians keep insisting that the US will attack Iran this month. Not only that, they seem to know just how the US will do it. Does Beasty Boy read Drudge?
Lets hope those 'war is deceit' boys, don't already have a bomb or two. Putting all those ships and troops in fairly close proximity could be a big mistake. Expect the unexpected. Iran claimed 42,000 suicide bombers, who will target US interests, Israels interests, and Soloman Rushdie. I bet all 42,000 of those cowards will go after Soloman. If the US attacks Iran, Soloman Rushdie better get out of town...quick.

Why don’t the Russians attack themselves, oh that’s right they have been doing that for 100 or more years. The Russians and the Red Chinese are not our buddies, yes the Chinese are hosting the hoaxlympics but that changes nothing. What happened, back in 80 I was for attacking Iran/ Afghanistan=USSR(heck that’s the only reason I signed up in the first place) now we are still debating it? Hurry up and make up your mind you high command scholars, this business of average citizens outguessing you or as you like to say being ahead of the curve has to stop. It’s embarrassing, not only to you but to me as well.

Interesting letter in today's jpost.com:

Sir, - Hillel Shuval pointed out how two countries were big enough to admit and forgive past injustices after WWII, providing a model for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Germans and Czechs were aided by Christianity, which emphasizes forgiveness and brotherhood. Once the Nazi ideology of racial superiority was discredited, Germany could return to her ethical roots, treat the Czechs as equals, and reconcile with them.

Islam teaches that unbelievers are to be tolerated as inferiors (dhimmis), or are to be warred against until subjugated (9:29 of the Koran). This doctrine of religious supremacy forms the basis of jihad.

True reconciliation between Israel and her neighbors can happen only when jihadist supremacy is discarded, its past injustices acknowledged and Jewish political aspirations accorded full respect.

If we are mark'd to die, we are enow to do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires. But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England.
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour As one man more methinks would share from me For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made, And crowns for convoy put into his purse; We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd, And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.' Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages, What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words- Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester- Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

The decendants of these men still exist, we may have moved but we are still here, waiting, watching, deciding.

Iran has picked a fight with a country whose huge military industrial complex was devoted, out of necessity, to countering the ambitions of history's largest dictatorship. Our only weakness is our reluctance to use the power that we have. Iran wants to be the strongest guy on the block and that is not hard to do, relatively speaking. They may be a couple of years away from a crude nuclear device but they are never going to achieve a delivery system coupled with a sophisticated device. They will not last that long.

It was a proud and defiant moment for the mahdi-in-jihad-in-chief. Standing before the turbaned tyrants, flowered podium and the lovely Iranian banner linking the nuclear symbol and the blue butterfly floating to the left of his head. Nuclear weapons, butterflies and jihad, why hadn't we linked those images before? Only in Iran.

Confronting this menace now means that they are only in the early stages of capability. Confronting them later will only prolong the inevitable. How many more lives will be lost if we wait?

Just as the slow jihad and the fast jihad referred to on this site have but the same end if we allow it?

Did you see the Kenneth Branagh film version of Henry the 5th? The scene you quote, and the one that follows it immediately is astoundingly good and inspiring, for example where Henry V cries out, "by the mass our hearts are in the trim!!...Come no more for ransom, gentle herald, for they shall have none, I swear it, but these my joints!!! (English soldiers begin whooping) Which, if they have them, as I shall leave em them, shall yield them, but little, tell the constable..."

That's not verbatim though, I'm typing it from memory. The Branagh version seems to me a hundred times better than the older version with Laurence Olivier. And after those speeches, as Branagh gives them, it's pretty hard to listen to the similarly intended speeches in movies like, say, Braveheart, without throwing up, because after you've heard a good version of Henry V, Braveheart-like lines can seem less than worthless.

To all the fading "has been" Hollywood or TV stars, here's a way to get back onto the front pages again, no more adopting babies, marrying deadbeats, going to re-hab, inventing a stalker or taking an over dose of placebo's.

Here's the deal.....

Stand in front of the nearest mosque on Friday morning then as the funny people start to exit the building drop your panties then proceed to wipe your sagging ass with the quran then throw it at them and run.

You will then have yourself a ((((FATWA)))) worth more than all the tea in China.

Think of the media attention you will receive after that performance, you will sell your story for trillions while being cared for at the tax payers expense for as long as you desire.

Your name will be remembered for centuries along with such world hero's as Salman Rushdie, Arnie Swartzeneger, Ronald Regan and John Wayne.

Go on, be the first... do it now before all the other Hollywood has beens jump on the bandwagon.

There is perpetual violence, social instability, and a lack of morality in Iran. There are reasons to question the sources and ramifications. Brutality is institutionalized and government sanctioned. The religious regime authorizes the torture of citizens. Muslim adherents consider it acceptable. Shiites teach each other about punishment, suffering, and the resurrection of Imams. They teach manifestations inline with instructing suicide bombers and jihadists, ideas about Allah, self-sacrifice, and sexual pleasure.
Islam is orally transmitted and scripture based. The deity is superior, grandiose, and coherent. The male is to commit violence against non-Muslims and women. He is to form pogroms. He is to eradicate what is perceived to be immoral. He is to remain intolerant against external beliefs. He is to fight the infidel. He must claim authority. The victim is to be enslaved and humiliated.
The broader contemporary culture is of pathological violence, killing of children, genocide, brutality, jealousy, non-forgiveness, domination, ethnic cleansing, unjustness, blood thirst, fanaticism, sadism, masochism, and reward in paradise. They fantasize about warfare. They are resistant to therapy. They are in denial about their toxic environmental expression, and their shackles of shame and guilt.
Persians need a shift in attitude and behavior. They can put a stop to unnecessary acts. They can find a different version of morality. They can rediscover Western ideas about cooperation and the elevation of modern justice.
