Iran bans Western haircuts, eyebrow plucking for men

An update on this story, from Reuters:

TEHRAN, Iran (Reuters) -- Iranian police have warned barbers against offering Western-style hair cuts or plucking the eyebrows of their male customers, Iranian media said Sunday.

Only Westerners don't like a "unibrow," apparently.

The report by a reformist daily, later confirmed by an Iranian news agency, appeared to be another sign of authorities cracking down on clothing and other fashion deemed to be against Islamic values.
"Western hairstyles ... have been banned," the newspaper Etemad said in a front-page headline.
It came a week after police launched a crackdown against the growing number of young women testing the limits of the law with shorter, brighter and skimpier clothing ahead of the summer months.
[...]
The student news agency ISNA quoted a police statement as saying: "In an official order to barbershops, they have been warned to avoid using Western hair styles and doing men's eyebrows."
Iranian young men have in recent years started paying more attention to the way they look and dress, especially in affluent parts of the capital Tehran. Spiked up hair, by using gel, is known as the Khorusi (Rooster) style and some also use make-up.
Several hairdressers for men in Tehran offer cuts in the style of Hollywood movie stars and other Western celebrities. Clients can also have their eyebrows plucked.
The head of the barbers' union, Mohammad Eftekharifard, said police had instructed it to "exercise specific regulations in barbershops that work under its supervision."
Barbers who do not follow these rules might be closed down for a month and even lose their permits to operate, Etemad quoted him as saying.
"Currently some barbershops apply make-up and use (hair) styles that are in line with those in European countries and America," Eftekharifard said.
He added: "An official order has been sent to the union ... not to apply make-up on men's faces (or) do eyebrows ... and hence the barbers are not allowed to do these things."
Since hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the presidency in 2005 on a promise of returning to the values of the revolution, hardlinvers have pressed for tighter controls on what they consider immoral behavior.

Another sign of the leadership of Iran falling more into complete madness.

Whose going to throw out Ahmadinutjob. The US, or his own people? Somebody has to do it because he's getting more and more unstable.

I get the feeling that there may be a quiet rebellion brewing among many of the young, which is expressing itself in non-comformity, and which the mullahs are trying to stamp out.

The rebellion from the young, when it finally comes, will necessarily be a complete repudiation of Islam. They will have seen that Islam cannot be "reformed", that the mullahcracy is a pure expression of Islam, and that any attempt at "Islam-lite" will just lead to another mullahcracy soon enough

Make-up!!! What girlie-men are these?

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (17/133): “It is not permissible to remove the hair of the eyebrows because this is the namas (plucking) for which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed those who do it, and it is a kind of changing the creation of Allaah, which is the action of the Shaytaan. If a woman’s husband tells her to do it, she should not obey him, because it is a sin, and there is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience towards the Creator. Rather obedience should only be with regard to things that are good and proper, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said.”

Secondly:

It is permissible to remove any hair from the face apart from the hair of the eyebrows.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (17/130): “The evidence that it is permissible for a woman to remove hair from her body is the basic principle which states that it required for her to adorn herself for her husband. There is no evidence to suggest that this is not allowed, apart from the prohibition on al-namas (plucking), which means removing hair from the eyebrows.”

And it also says (5/197): “What is the Islamic ruling on removing hair that grows between the eyebrows? The Committee replied: It is permissible to pluck it, because it is not part of the eyebrows.”

And Allaah knows best.

Micro-management down to the smallest thing...aaarrrggghhh!

It's not just Ahmadinejad that has to go. It is the entire regime and the repressive state apparatus that has to go. Completely. If Ahmadinejad is replaced without removing the regime, all you have is the same setup with a different face at the top. And getting rid of the regime will be an impossible task for the people alone, especially as around one in 14 Iranians are either Revolutionary Guards or Basij thugs, and are enforcers of the regime.

OT Cat Stevens is coming back to MUSIC. Note where his press release comes from.

Spirit Of 1683: you are correct that what comes will necessarily be a civil war, with the Islamic side being the ones with the guns and training.

The dynamics of the Islamic regime is that you have the mullahs on top and controlling the money. They in turn hire the enforcer thugs. The enforcer thugs enjoy a higher standard of living than they otherwise would, and are recruited from the class of people who enjoy busting heads. They thus have a strong incentive to maintain the regime.

If the mullahs are overthrown using outside force, we will have a situation similar to Iraq, with the committed Islamists, Revolutionary Guards and Basijs being in a similar role as the Iraqi Sunnis and Baathists. They will likely have weapons caches stashed all over Iran, and will stage a protracted guerilla campaign to recover power.

I don't see a solution that does not involve something similar to the French Revolution: the complete liquidation of the Mullahs, the Basijs, and all the committed Islamists. Anything less will be an endless low-level civil war. And no the US does not have the resources, not even with all of Western Europe, to pacify Iran AND Iraq. Particularly since an overthrow of Islam in Iran would result in fighters from all over the Islamic world coming in

Mahmoud and the mad mullahs just want everyone looking as cretinish as they do.

Pluck you, fellahs!

(That's what needs to happen.)

Ah this is a great ploy! We could have the Hirsute Hadith Hollering Hoards Heaving Heaps of Hatred! Or even the Hairy Harridans of Hate. I like it!
My goodness, just when you think it couldn’t get any worse some little short arse turns up with this nonsense….I wait with baited breath for the next blast of fundamentalism. But what could it be?

Perhaps it would be a good idea to email suggestions to the Iranian Institute of Islamic Banality with your thoughts and ideas; this could at a push just be enough to put the long suffering population over the edge and rise up against the powers that be. I have to warn you though that you’ll be struggling to come up with something really outrageous, unless you have a seriously warped mind or due to your studies of Islam some of it has rubbed off on you….

Makes me think of Woody Allen’s movie ‘Bananas’, where at the end of the movie the newly installed dictator informs the long suffering peons of the South American country that as of tomorrow the new language of said country will be Swedish and that as a promotion of personal cleanliness underpants will henceforth be worn on the outside of clothing.

I get that letting facial hair grow amuck is islamic but what's an islamic haircut?

3812Michelle-

An "Islamic haircut" is the application of a sharp blade to the neck.

(Something like a "Columbian necktie", I think.)

Here's a fatwa from Pelayo:

Humans are the creation of Allah, including all things associated with humans. Using soap and deodorant would hide the wonderful aroma of Allah's creation. Therefore, bathing is limited only to that which is required to perform wudu and ghusl. Soap is a creation of infidels and Mohammed (LSMFT) did not use it. Soap, dandruff shampoo, RID, A-200, Pyrinate, and Liban are hereby declared haram.

This is once again proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Islam is a polytheistic religion. Mohammed certainly did not cite a Quran verse to support every opinion. When people follow the example of El Perfecto, it amounts to worship.

damn! so that means that the iranian version of "queer eye for the straight guy" is gonna get cut.

interestingconundrum-

Thought I was kidding.

Pre-empted by the Urban Dictionary, no less!

Do they have a definition of "Muslim Humor"?

(I'll bet it kills.)

Nose jobs are big in Iran too. Shame, the young fokes want to look good and enjoy life, but are born into Islam. Guess they got to look like cave men....soon all the women will be head to toe in black. Thank God I am a American!

Anyone have any idea why Mohammed prohibited eyebrow plucking? Did some plucked kaffir tease His Short Fatness about the fleas in his beard, or the mysterious stiffness of his robe in certain areas (see Aisha's remarks on this) or his orange-hennaed hair or something?

Secondly, what's with all this barbershop stuff? Are only barbers allowed to buy tweezers, or what? Or is it just that Muslim males can't do bloody anything for themselves?

Here is a list of the only acceptable Islamic Haircuts. ;)

http://www.berryburger.com/funstuff_107.htm

Does headlice plucking count? There is a hadith where Mohmmad stops by a womans house and she searches his hair for lice.

I stopped going to the barber years ago, but when I did, none of them plucked my eyebrows. Where I come from, eyebrow plucking men are abused. I agree with Beasty Boy on this one. Eyebrow plucking in Iran must stop. Look at Beasty, he never plucks his. Of course he only has one, but it is large. We can call Beasty many names, but eyebrow plucker he is not...

I have one more thing to say about eyebrow plucking men...Look at Al-Gore, now look at Michael Moore.
See what I mean...

Living the good life has taken its toll on Gore; he looks like one of those old-time, black and white Charlie Chan actors, white guys made up to look Oriental. His face is so bloated that his eyes are slanted. Maybe he is ill; I shouldn't make fun of him until I know for sure. He's still doing his thing for global warming, flying around in a private jet to deliver lectures to the peons about how they will have to "sacrifice" to save the planet.

It's a real comfort to realize that he's doing his share of "sacrificing" by buying carbon credits from himself to compensate for the private jet travel, and using more energy to run his mansion in Tennessee than half the county combined. Every hypocrite demoncrat candidate participating in last week's debate flew in separate private jets to the venue and I believe they all agreed that global warming is a serious problem. How "conservationist" of them. It's quite obvious that the proletariat will endure all the sacrifices deemed necessary by the elite to control this catastrophic problem.

You may have written it in humour Pelayo, but it is true. Most of the muslims do not bathe since they think that the wudu (wazu) is the ultimate act of purification. I do visit muslim neighbourhoods and ghettos, they STINK big time. And I have got used to the smell that is the hallmark of a muslim. They are not interested in soaps and shampoos. Believe me, it's true.

How gay are these mullahs?

I mean, even in San Francisco you can wear the wrong haircut and not go to jail.

These people are really serious about fashion.

Persians never were the best at Islam, but this latest fatwa is an outrage, and not in keeping the sacred Sunnah:

* 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 ** 33:21 *

Mohammed said "Five things are in accordance with the tradition of prophets: to be circumcised, to shave the pelvic region, to pull out the hair of the armpits, to cut short the moustaches, and to clip the nails."
--- Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 74, Number 312

You don't want hair floating around in the communal waters in the bath house thoughtfully located next door to the mosque, do you?

Well, we know that Chairman Mao hated dentists because his own teeth were rotten.

It figures that the ugly hairy little one, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, hates attractive people.

Who would care if that's where it all stopped? But tyrants never know when to stop.

Will the Iranians also have a crackdown on unshaven private parts? Shaving the sensitive areas is also part of Islamic.

Can't wait until the "armpit hair pulling" fatwa strikes.

No razors, now. Just "pulling"

As specified by the "prophet" himself.

Get pulling, Iran!

The Iranian ayatollahs and the religious police think western haircuts, etc are immoral and need to be banned. What a bunch of hypocrits! They have no problem whatsoever, allowing old perverts to marry and have sex with 9 yr old little girls. Something is really wrong with their mentalities.

This bizarre behavior is strange to us but perfectly normal to people who believe muhammad's deviant habits and aberrant sexual appetites were sanctioned by allah and therefore incumbent upon all muslims for all time to follow and imitate.

Every mundane, minute, and extremely personal activity is governed by asinine islamic rituals and rules, from brushing one's teeth to using the toilet. You wouldn't believe some of the questions at "Ask the Imam" regarding sex, personal hygiene, and other issues related to the human body and personal relationships. There is something terribly wrong with people who allow every irrelevant aspect of their lives to be regulated by an islamic edict. Islam is insane.

Here's an article by a Westernized Iranian woman that gives a different cultural perspective on the issue.
