MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) -- Kenyan police arrested 11 people on Wednesday including an Islamic preacher and a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of links to al Qaeda.
Dozens of officers launched pre-dawn raids on an Islamic school and three other locations in the coastal city of Mombasa.
"The raid is intended to arrest suspects in connection with terrorism activities and the al Qaeda network," said one senior police commander who asked not to be named.
The suspects are being held at two Mombasa police stations.
Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Kenya and for a hotel bombing four years later.
Security experts say the country is at risk from more attacks because of its proximity to neighboring lawless Somalia, and the ease with which its borders can be crossed by extremists taking advantage of their remoteness or easily bribed officials.
Kenya's Muslims, who live mostly on the coast and make up about 10 percent of the mainly Christian country's 35 million people, say they are unfairly targeted by the security services.
Residents caught up in Wednesday's swoops said they were forced from their beds and made to lie in torrential rain for more than an hour while officers searched inside.
Local Islamic leaders also condemned the raids, linking them to an ongoing U.S. visit by Kenya's internal security minister.
"We are always being used as bait especially when the government is expecting aid," said Sheikh Mohammed Dor, secretary general of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya. "They are trying to please the United States at the expense of Muslims."
How about taking a serious look at the level of support for al-Qaeda within your community, Sheikh Dor? Or do you care?

If there is one good thing about these Afrcian/Asian nations, (Kenya, Ethiopia, Southern Nigeria, Uganda and others in Africa, and China, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore and others in Asia), is that without the constant sense of ethical superiority Westerners, including Israel and West-influenced India, too often feel, they can feel free to just entirely ignore the whole notion of muslims' sensibilites, and for that matter, the sensibilities of any other peoples who threaten their societies. It does seem these countries are WAY less likely than Western ones to ever get to the point where they either have to eradicate/kill/expel all muslims in their lands or succumb as dhimmis altogether.
The attitude is apparently you're either loyal to our nation and what it stands for or you're not, and if you're not, you're not welcome, needed or wanted anywhere in our vicinity. Hence, the msulim communities in these nations either become properly, culturally and ideologically integrated with their host countries, as in Ethiopia, at least they were before the Saudis made their presence felt in the region like they did everywhere else, or they get kicked around, beaten and stomped on and thrown out, a la China, Burma and Vietnam.
Now, ultimately, I and most other Westerners, even those aware of the reality of the jihad we face, would probably still object to Western nations taking such measures as ejecting every single citizen labelled as "muslim" from our nations or not allowing entry to anyone labelled as "muslim" or from an islamic nation. Nor would I or most others find it appropriate to ignore refuse to help any muslims in human rights crisis, like Darfurians or other Black Muslims in Sudan/Niger/Mauritania/Mali/Chad, Kurds, Non Arab North Africans or Balochis/Sindhis/Kashmiris in Pakiland.
That being said, I certainly don't have any objections to non-Islamic African or East Asian countries dealing with Islamics as they see fit. If Kenya, Ethiopia, Southern Nigeria, Ivory COast, Uganda, China, Burma and Vietnam have their ways of gringing jihad down, I pray we can at least force *human rights* groups to never ever be bitching or moaning about it. Moreover, I do feel we absolutely must come to their aid and help them out in bring down jihadists however they choose to do it. Many of them, esp in Africa as was noted here before, have already been desperately battling jihadists for decades now, and have already been abandoned by the West in the past. Unlike the West, all these nations, with so many internal problems as it is, can ill afford to stop the spread of violent jihad without Western aid, mass progroms of muslims, or quite possibly both, unfortunately.
I'm always amazed at how muslims constantly talk about being "unfairly targeted". Are they really that unaware of why that might be so? Or is this an artifact of a belief that since robbing/raping/murdering infidels isn't immoral, targeting Muslims must be "unfair"?

You have noble sentiments but I think you are ignoring two things:
1. Many of the human rights or agricultural crises are caused by Muslims who are rebelling against their central government and trying to bring it down. These same people would bring down our government if they could. Would you expect us to give shelter to people who have said openly that they want to kill us?
2. There's no denying that the attacks that have taken place in this country were by Muslims who came here from abroad, not by Muslims whose parents came here decades or even a century ago. They were welcomed by Americans who took no notice of their religion, but assumed they were here to build a better life. Our reward for this welcome is still visible in New York City. It also resides in the hearts and homes of people who lost loved ones on that fateful day and in the minds of those who witnessed the event. In the five years since there has been virtually no indication that the worldwide Muslim community has any regret for what was done. Most keep their joy to themselves, but on that day we saw the Palestinians openly celebrating an act of barbarism.
You may have the gift of omniscience, but I know of no one else who has. We are under attack by Muslims. The "peaceful" Muslims have not lifted a finger on our behalf. We can only be attacked by people with the means to get here. That means we cannot allow Muslims to get here.
