"Traditional and even mainstream Islamic teaching accepts and promotes violence"

In "The Trouble With Islam: Sadly, mainstream Muslim teaching accepts and promotes violence" in, of all places, Opinion Journal (which is generally among the willfully clueless derided in this piece), Tawfik Hamid speaks truth to power:

...But indeed, there is much that is clearly wrong with the Islamic world. Women are stoned to death and undergo clitorectomies. Gays hang from the gallows under the approving eyes of the proponents of Shariah, the legal code of Islam. Sunni and Shia massacre each other daily in Iraq. Palestinian mothers teach 3-year-old boys and girls the ideal of martyrdom. One would expect the orthodox Islamic establishment to evade or dismiss these complaints, but less happily, the non-Muslim priests of enlightenment in the West have come, actively and passively, to the Islamists' defense.

[...]

It is vital to grasp that traditional and even mainstream Islamic teaching accepts and promotes violence. Shariah, for example, allows apostates to be killed, permits beating women to discipline them, seeks to subjugate non-Muslims to Islam as dhimmis and justifies declaring war to do so. It exhorts good Muslims to exterminate the Jews before the "end of days." The near deafening silence of the Muslim majority against these barbaric practices is evidence enough that there is something fundamentally wrong.

The grave predicament we face in the Islamic world is the virtual lack of approved, theologically rigorous interpretations of Islam that clearly challenge the abusive aspects of Shariah. Unlike Salafism, more liberal branches of Islam, such as Sufism, typically do not provide the essential theological base to nullify the cruel proclamations of their Salafist counterparts. And so, for more than 20 years I have been developing and working to establish a theologically-rigorous Islam that teaches peace.

Yet it is ironic and discouraging that many non-Muslim, Western intellectuals--who unceasingly claim to support human rights--have become obstacles to reforming Islam. Political correctness among Westerners obstructs unambiguous criticism of Shariah's inhumanity. They find socioeconomic or political excuses for Islamist terrorism such as poverty, colonialism, discrimination or the existence of Israel. What incentive is there for Muslims to demand reform when Western "progressives" pave the way for Islamist barbarity? Indeed, if the problem is not one of religious beliefs, it leaves one to wonder why Christians who live among Muslims under identical circumstances refrain from contributing to wide-scale, systematic campaigns of terror.

Politicians and scholars in the West have taken up the chant that Islamic extremism is caused by the Arab-Israeli conflict. This analysis cannot convince any rational person that the Islamist murder of over 150,000 innocent people in Algeria--which happened in the last few decades--or their slaying of hundreds of Buddhists in Thailand, or the brutal violence between Sunni and Shia in Iraq could have anything to do with the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Read it all.

Islam's founder supported himself and his merry band through banditry and looting.

He married a 6 year old and had sex with her at 9 ( Hadith Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64)

He mandates death to those who try to leave

And people seriously think the religion can be tamed?

"It is vital to grasp that traditional and even mainstream Islamic teaching accepts and promotes violence"

....amen....

Thankfully the TRUTH about the teachings in Islam, which more often then not commands and blesses violent jihad against non-Muslims by Muslims. Thanks be to God that the Satanic based teachings of Islam at last are being exposed for all to see. These teachings of the enemy came about to disrupt the spread of the good news of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ, and His passion and resurection. Holy Week is a good week to expose these false islamic teachings.

"Holy Week is a good week to expose these false islamic teachings. "

...every week is a good week to expose Islamic teachings,,both false and violent....

exsgtbrown,

True, but in a special way during this special week because of the devil got defeated on that first Good Friday.

Islam can be reformed - ofcourse it can, but any reformation that misses out on the Jihad, will not be accepted by the Muslim world.

I wish Tawfik Hamid the very best in his endeavour. The sad fact is, that many reformers of Islam have come, and then very quickly disappeared. If such a Reformation was possible it would have been done long ago.

" Unlike Salafism, more liberal branches of Islam, such as Sufism, typically do not provide the essential theological base to nullify the cruel proclamations of their Salafist counterparts."

They can't, and therefore never will.

Do check the whole article at http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110009890.

The picture is worth a thousand words.

Then it will be an appropriate date to launch "clean up Iran" campaign.

Music to ones ears.

islam is an evil ideology.

The sooner the virus of islam is stamped out, the better.

islam has, and never has had, anything to contribute to the world.

Think about it next time you see a fat imam or a far Saudi bastard making the usual angry pronouncements.

Mr. Hamid is a very brave, courageous man to be saying what he's saying. And he is right on the money. The way so called "progressives" give Islam a pass on behaviour that would drive them to fits of rage and "activism" if the perpetrators were Christian and/or Western is a clear sign not just of their hipocrisy, it's also a sign of their self hate and cluelessness.

Throw in a clueless Republican conservative elite and the recipe for disaster comes closer to fruition. That's why the message of this and other anti-Jihadist websites is so important and vital. Keep spreading the word!

No Western "Politically Correct" people here, Thank God!

People, after my own personal prayers at bedtime, I also pray to God to "save us from the Muslims." Anyone else ask God for help against our enemy?

But its a peeeeeeeeaceful religion.

"Anyone else ask God for help against our enemy?"

I haven't been praying to God for help against our enemy, though I do pray everyday. I will start to pray that our "head in the sand media" and political elites finally wise up to the threat, as well as those so called "progressive" fools.

I think also some prayers for the safety and well being of Mr. Spencer, Mr. Fitzgerald and all others actively trying to raise the alarm about Islam's threat are a good idea.

The President must be wondering whatever happened to his down-home, good ole Religion of Peace.

Wonder if he ever bother to read the Koran, yet?

He can borrow Condoleeza Rice's unopened copy.

No, he just lets Grover Norquist 'splain it to him.

I am always told I have "already posted several times" ha ha. Censoring at YT, I notice the islam crowd posts quite a lot...it is peace ya know.

Denazification and the renunciation of diety status of the Emporer of Japan and Japanese imperialism were only possible because Germany and Japan had been reduced to smoldering ash heaps. Anything less than total military defeat would have meant that those fascist ideologies would have retained validity and currency among manny in Germany and Japan.

What is the analogous defeat that must be visited upon Islam to exterpate it from the hearts and minds of Muslims?

Here is a post at Daniel Pipes site by Tawfik Hamid

BunrattyBill - I have a suggestion. Follow the example of the Babylonians and Romans in the OT.

Dear Plague - Thanks, but question was rhetorical.

Possible answers: take out their holy sites
take out the countries housing the holy sites (Iran, Iraq, Saudi)

It wouldn't be pretty, but it would def. be the lesser of the inevitable evils.

Buratty Bill - exactly. In the old days the temples of the enemy gods were destroyed. This would cause doubt in the minds of those believers and would push many fence sitters into the right place.

Destroy the temples physically and you change the beliefs.

Also - Bunratty Bill - I've posted the same line of thought you suggest and agree with you. I've also put out the idea that the Crusades should have put the attacks & occupations on the places of root cause ( Mecca and Medina ) instead of the place showing the symptoms ( Jerusalem )

The Crusaders should have set up a Christian kingdom in Mecca and Medina and should have wiped all traces of the plague from the Earth.

Plague - too bad history can't be re-run. Or can it? I doubt the West has the stomach anymore. I was looking at a book recently about the WWII firebombing of Dresden, and the photos of the remains of the victims, civilian men, women, and children, were gruesome. Ditto Hamburg, Berlin, Tokyo, Hiroshima, etc. That is what we have to be prepared to inflict. Someone once said something like patriotism is not as much about being willing to die for your country, as to be willing to kill for it. Here, here... Certainly the Islams can relate to that. IT's a shame that to confront them, we have no option but to stoop to their level of inhumanity, violence, and destruction..

"Unlike Salafism, more liberal branches of Islam, such as Sufism, typically do not provide the essential theological base to nullify the cruel proclamations of their Salafist counterparts."

Is this statement correct?, didn't the Sufis play a large role, if not the leading role, in the Armenian geonicide?

I congratulate Mr. Hamid for his brave stance, but I don't think he's addressed the root cause of this evil. The problem is not radical Islam, or militant Islam, or "resurgent" Islam (went to a Raphael Israeli lecture recently).

The problem is Islam, pure & simple.

As Mr. Hamid said, the "moderate" branches of Islam "typically do not provide the essential theological base to nullify the cruel proclamations of their Salafist counterparts."

How could they?, what is in the Quaran or the Ahadith which would allow or justify the foundations of a "moderate" Islamic theology.

DP111 you said...Islam can be reformed - ofcourse it can, but any reformation that misses out on the Jihad, will not be accepted by the Muslim world.
I wish Tawfik Hamid the very best in his endeavour.

Funny how so many people keep saying that it can be reformed... It is obvious that they havent read the Quran and others of their books eh...
To reform it you would have to cut out three quarters of the Quran, and so much of others of their books.. they beleive totally in Mohammad and this is the man whom they follow today, he was a man of war, a pirate on land, he raided town after town, slaughtering and taking slaves as he went, this is how they lived, they took the booty and shared it amongst themselves with Mohammad getting one firth. They didnt cultivate land, they didnt have business, they did nothing except raid other peoples land, Mohammad even skited that he chased the Jews off their land as he took town after town... keeping one of the women for himself after he killed her husband.

This is a great article by Hamid and I agree with every word of it. But it is sad to see some comments here referring to God and Jesus repeatedly in a manner that isn't all that different from your typical Muslim praising Allah to defeat his enemies:

"Thanks be to God that the Satanic based teachings of Islam at last are being exposed for all to see. These teachings of the enemy came about to disrupt the spread of the good news of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ, and His passion and resurection. Holy Week is a good week to expose these false islamic teachings."

VS.

"Thanks be to Allah that the Satanic based teachings of Christianity at last are being exposed for all to see. These teachings of the Crusaders are disrupting the spread of the good news of the saving Word of Mohammed. Ramadan is a good week to expose these false Christian teachings."

Now why should I believe that one of these statements is any less asinine than the other?

Christianity is definitely less violent than Islam, at least currently - the Middle Ages were a different story. Muslims need to learn to do what most (though unfortunately not all) Christians have done: ignore the nastiest parts of their sacred texts and focus on the more benevolent sections. And most importantly, keep their religion out of politics and vice versa.
