See, this is why I don't understand what is the hold up with letting Turkey into the EU. They already have all the Eurabia mentality. Christians and Jews are desendants of pigs and apes and all that... what else do the need to join the EU?

Turkey is often promoted in the media and by well meaning westerners as a "moderate and modern" example and of an Islamic state. This is all pure unadulterated nonesense. The secular army generals controlling the country know that over 99% of the country are conservative muslims with a very ottoman mentality. As my Turkish ex-muslim friend says: "step outside of Ankara and Istanbul and then come back and tell me its a tolerant nation. Anybody who believes it is simply is talking out of their ass or has never been there for any length of time" By "there" he told me that means OUTSIDE of Istanbul and Ankara --you know the rest of the entire country 99.9%. Remember the popular outcry turkish people had AGAINST the USA flying airplanes over Turkey in the FIRST gulf war, when even muslim nations like Egypt were helping against Iraq? Why do you think that is?
Many people, radical muslims especially, are funnelled from Europe through Turkey to get into Iraq or other usch places to do 'jihad' against the americans. Its a very well supported transportation system running right through Turkey.
Any westerner or European who thinks Turkey should join the EU or is just "a modern nation" is a complete idiot. Turkey is a trojan horse for Islam. Seriously, you have to be willfully obtuse to not see THAT inconvenient truth. Either that or just ignorant, having not researched the matter.

As somebody of Greek background I can tell you, having lived near there, Turkey loves to pocket any concessions Greece and the EU give them but never and I do SOOOOOOO mean NEVER returns the favor to the EU or Greece. Its a joke in Europe really. Many EU officials have expressed dismay about that. Turkey does NOT want to ease up on religious persecution of nonmuslim minorities, simply will NOT recognize the holocaust it had in the past against such peoples, will NOT accept Amnesty International's view of its human rights record, will NOT honor the EU requirements for membership (many of its politicians have stated it wants to join the EU but on Turkeys terms only)--in other words they want a 'special status'--although they dont call it that. Turkey is a ridiculous little country (in spirit if not land) populated by very conservative muslims (again look OUTSIDE of the main cities) who dont give a rat's ass about what EU wants from them to join nor do they care aobut Turkish nonmuslim minorities. Its a vile disgusting nation secretly run by a handful of military men who call the shots behind the closed doors of the parliament, and which regularly jails its own journalists for reporting anything that makes Turkey look bad.
Chrisitian missionaries are dangerous? Really? how exactly are their "DANGEROUS"??? Are their bibles filled with suicide bombs? Do they drive their church vehicles into Turkish govt buildings and blow themselves up screaming "Jesus Ackbar"? Do they shoot and kill any nonChristians who dont submit to them and pay jidzya? A God of infinite love and mercy – a God who teaches love in the family, love in marriage, love in the community, love (not just words – acts of justice, generosity and mercy) toward neighbours, strangers, even the ‘enemy’ – THIS is anathema to Islam. Next time you meet the smiling apologists of the religion of peace, remember the three Bible publishers who were tortured to death as punishment for trying to tell Muslims that “God is love”, and five people arrested for the same 'crime'.

Thats because you are obviously an educated person with her eyes wide open Caroline. But there are many (oh God Im embarrased to say how many in the liberal left media up here in Canada) that think "oh their just moderates in Turkey" For such people there is a disconnect between islam and Turkey --they literally dont see it. Its for them I wrote that. For my friends, for people like you, I just say: whats wrong with Turkey? Islam is dominate. See you are smart enough to see "hey how did a whole country become 99% ANYTHING let alone islam if islam WASNT a violent fascistic system?"
Its hilarious that after I wrote that last night there were protests in Ankara featured in the news because a very pro islamic leader is close to getting power (supported by a huge majority of muslims from the countryside). oy vey.
