CAIRO, Egypt: A top U.S. Democrat in Congress met with a leading Muslim Brotherhood member during a recent visit to Egypt, the Islamist group and American officials confirmed Saturday.U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer met with the Brotherhood's parliament leader, Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, twice on Thursday — once at the parliament building and another time at the home of the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, said Brotherhood spokesman Hamdi Hassan.
U.S. Embassy spokesman John Berry would only confirm that Hoyer, a Democrat from the U.S. state of Maryland, met with el-Katatni at U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone's home on Thursday as part of a reception that included other politicians and parliament members.
Berry stressed that Hoyer met with el-Katatni in his capacity as an independent member of Egypt's parliament. He would not say what the two discussed.
Though officially banned since 1954, the Brotherhood is considered Egypt's largest opposition group and President Hosni Mubarak's most powerful rival. Its members, who run as independents, make up the largest opposition bloc in parliament, holding about one-fifth of its 454 seats.
Top U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, have previously refused to meet with the Brotherhood, which renounced violence in 1970s.

This is the problem. Idiocy so thick on the ground that it can be spread around equally between those who keep insisting we "must stay until the mission is accmomplished" in Iraq and those who apparently, while exhibiting some slight degree of sanity in opposing the war, in others demonstrate another kind of miscomprehension. First Pelosi, hijabbed as she gallivanted to "find out for herself" something that is not possible to "find out" by talking to this or that Assad or Abdullah, but only by sitting at home reading, learning, making sense of Islam, its tenets, its attitudes, its atmospherics, its tactics, its history. Now Steny Hoyer believing, apparently, that the Ikhwam is just the thing. Mubarak isn't just the thing, and the Ikhwan isn't just the thing.
Bush isn't just the thing, and the Democrats who hate him and oppose his policies, but oppose them for the wrong reasons, and apparently unable to refrain from disturbing (though not quite so costly) displays of their own ignorance and innocence, are not the thing either.
Where are the people of sense? Why do they keep hiding? Why don't they step forward?

They insist on talking about 'radical muslims and moderate muslims', who don't exist in reality. They keep pretending that there are two groups of muslims, good ones and bad ones. They ignore the fact that Allahs insistence that every muslim is "obligated" to support and participate in jihad, or die a hypocrite, and miss out on Allah's paradise, but not his hell. This is the great unifier...the 'obligation' to participate.
Confusion will reign and those with sense will be quiet as long as Islam is misrepresented, and distortions are presented as reality...There is no radical Islam and there is no moderate Islam...there is only Islam...

We are about 10-15 years away from a new political party. My question is who is going out like the Whigs? Republicans or Democrates?
My bet is the Dems but I don't know anymore. I feel there is lot of disatisfaction in both parties. I have a sense a few more Islamic attacks will push people who "get it" into a new party who has a central plank of western ideals and the defeat of the Islamic jihad. Right now the Republican party is father along to that goal but they should not pat themselves on the back...they have a long way to go.

I get the feeling that the political leadership recognizes that the sun is setting on this phase of history (The Nurturing Age?) and that they’re gaming the system for personal gain.
