Reforming Islam will require a lot of dead imams.
Because, to turn the "literal" war verses of the Koran (and sayings of Mohammad in the Hadiths) into "poetic metaphors" is going to mean that every fundamentalist mullah and ayatollah will have to be killed off.

It isn't in their Koranic nature, as the Koran currently and terroristically stands.
Arabic is flexible enough to allow a "peaceful" revaluation of all values (to use Nietzsche's term), but only after all the maniacs are taking a dirt nap.

I subscribe to the inverse of the "give them an inch and they'll take a mile" philosophy when it comes to Muslims in the West. If they ask for an inch, make them give back a mile.
If they ask to build another mosque, knock two mosques down and tell them to collectively lose enough weight that they can fit into whatever mosques remain.
I definitely take a "Nietzschean" attitude toward Islam, in the sense that I hate Islam at least as much as he hated Christianity, although the man himself had a slight bias in favor of Islam. Of course, he never had the opportunity to see the barbarity of today's jihadis, which I highly doubt he would find a sign of a superior culture.

It is astounding that the western elites have been so comfortable for so long about the nastiest sorts of denigration toward Christian beliefs and believers, and yet pretend to such caring and daintiness about the absurd beliefs and deadly practices of the mohammedans.
We are literally at the point where Catholic nuns are a staple of American stage and movie comedies, as often as not the primary butt of the humor.
As odd as it sounds to say, humor is an important part of all of this. We run a risk in being too grave about mohammedan pieties.
Irreverence has more to do, I believe, with the decline of the prestige of western religions than any debate over serious issues of theology.
What the world needs is a touching two-hankie comic movie about a nasty fire-and-brimstone imam who's humanity is restored by a mischevious over-intelligent pig. Called perhaps ... um, how about "Ham and Hamid".
I rather doubt you could find a single person in California with the stones to make such a movie. But who knows, you might be able to find somebody somewhere.
The righteousness has to be on our side of the relation. If you can't take a joke then there's something wrong with you, we're just having a bit of normal friendly fun.
Certainly Hollywood rallied to produce a spate of anti-Nazi comedies, adventure stories, cartoons and dramas during the WWII period and after.
And you will have noted that the mohammedan countries are perfectly flooded with anti-western, anti-American and anti-Israeli propaganda books, films and TV.
There is no excuse for not including our friendly vast-majority of "moderate" mohammedans in the circle of anti-reliigious western fun. As a gesture of fellowship. ;-)

I agree. Someone ought to clue in the "elites" that Islam is part of the Abrahamic tradition (at least to hear the Muslims tell it. I believe that about as much as I believe in the Tooth Fairy, maybe even less). Maybe that'll shake them from their "dogmatic slumber" regarding Islam.

For a sustained refutation of that folly, conducted primarily from the Christian POV but with stuff that is relevant for Jews also...anyone who can read French should try Jacques Ellul's sizzling essay "Les Trois Piliers du Conformisme" ('The Three Pillars of Conformity"). It's unpolished - he drafted it just before he died in 1994 - but worth reading. He deals in short order with 1. the claim that 'we are all sons of Abraham', 2. 'we all worship One God' and 3. 'the religions of the Book'. As far as he is concerned, Jews and Christians - despite the agonising history between us - clearly stand together on the Tanakh (Jewish scriptures). But Islam is something else again. It's pinched a few names and words and completely altered their meaning - beyond recognition.
You all might like to know that Ellul befriended and mentored Bat Ye'or and wrote forewords for two of her books. He had Islam's number - the money quote is this: "there is so much talk nowadays of the tolerance and fundamental pacifism of Islam THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO RECALL ITS NATURE, WHICH IS FUNDAMENTALLY WARLIKE" (from his preface to "The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam", my emphasis added). He means every word.

To which I would only add that it is also fundamentally deceptive in interactions with non-Muslims. Personally, if a person self-identifies as a Muslim, I don't believe a single word they say.
