Female Kuwaiti education minister sworn in without wearing veil, some parliamentarians fuming

Unsurprisingly, some Kuwaiti legislators won't let this issue go away. Sharia Alert. "Islamists demand Kuwait woman minister wear veil," by Ulf Laessing for Tiscali:

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Kuwait’s new female education minister refused to wear a veil as she took an oath when the OPEC oil producer’s new government was sworn in on Monday, leading to protests by several Islamist parliamentarians.
Nouriya al-Subaih defied calls by some deputies to cover her hair when taking the oath with the rest of the Gulf Arab country’s cabinet.
"The minister must comply with the provisions of sharia (Islamic law) approved by parliament. The government must uphold the law," said deputy Dhaifallah Buramia, who stood up in parliament until Speaker Jassem al-Kharafi told him to sit down.
Another Islamist deputy, Nasser al-Sanae, disagreed and played down the importance of the incident.
"This issue is no problem for the government. These are individual opinions. It is her own decision," he told reporters after the assembly was dissolved.
Women won the right to run for office and vote in Kuwait in 2005 in the face of resistance from some deputies who managed to add a clause stipulating that women must abide by Islamic law.

The details of that stipulation have never been specified -- perhaps deliberately, so that it may be invoked as the supposed need arises without limitation.

Subaih, a liberal who does not belong to any political bloc, is one of two women in the new cabinet. The other woman, Health Minister Massouma al-Mubarak, always wears a veil in public.

I am sure that the merry widow, Naseem, and her crowd of Islamic bigots, would roundly condemn (and threaten)Ms. al-Subaih for her decision to cast off the veil as she took office. Hopefully, Ms. al-Subaih is able to make a real difference in her job and be a role model for young Kuwaiti women who want more in life than veils, forced marriages and a lifetime of beatings and despair. Of course, I also hope that Ms. al-Sabaih is able to keep her head, literally. To the new cabinet member, I say: YOU GO, GIRL!

My cynicism about women's progress in Muslim societies has reached the point where I'm thinking of starting "dead pools" on women like this. How long until some random Muslim male, who will immediately be labeled an "extremist" by a "shocked" Kuwaiti government, shoots her, beats her to death, or beheads her, all in the name of Allah and the Koran?

And how many Muslims will smile to themselves when they hear of it, even as they protest (wide-eyed with their sincerity) to the kaffir, "That is not Islam!"

What is it with uncovered womens' hair and Muslim men?

It's only dead (cuticle-like) matter.

You'd think it meant something offensive.

Is Allah afraid of women's hair?

What would happen if some artist shaped a length of womens' hair into the name of "Allah" in Arabic?

Would Baal, Jr. implode?

(Or just his not-so-merry Mohammo-minions?)

Brave woman.
Let's hope she lives long enough to have some positive influence.

It is interesting that so many islamic women would rather not wear the veil or scarf. I fly a lot and as soon as the announcement comes out that the plane has cleared Saudi airspace, the women line up for the restroom and emerge in miniskirts and the like....conversely, many women, living in U.S. will wait until the very last announcement to start donning the hijab and head coverings before returning 'home' to visit family. Here is Houston, lots of the women who wear a head covering also seem to wear makeup which I find completely confusing.....perhaps since Texas women are usually taught not to set foot outside the house without some makeup (parallels the veil?) the islamic women may be trying to assimulate....come to think of it, the head scarfs look bigger.........(big hair-big scarf) ok-ok, now I've gotton silly

Why did we remove Saddam from Kuwait?

Because he murdered alot of cuticle matter. and whats with the muslim men crying you don't know what it means to cut off a muslims mans hair? It means his manhood! Catch shave confess and release.

This short text sums it up pretty well:

I'm planning to ask one those voluntary 96ers why she thinks that I have to rape her as soon as I catch a glimpse of her hair.

The woman have free choice in wearing the viel or not wearing it. But the headscraf must be worning to be consider than good muslim woman. Those woman who change into miniskirt when not in Saudic airspace arenot true muslim woman, they are pretending to be muslim woman to they family. All woman who goes to the mosque I goto wear the headscraf and many wear the burqa and the veil. They are mostly very modest woman who have strong faith in Allah. Some just wear the headscraft with modest western sytes clothing.
Muslim woman are allow to wear make up and perfume as long as it isnot excessive and then it is only frowned upon. Older muslim woman are allow to wear more make up than younger muslim woman can.

Look, defenderofIslam, Nancy Pelosi wear's a headscarf, and make up too. She looks pretty good for a muslim woman. A little old and wrinked but still has a few miles left in her. If 'she' can do that for Allah, you would think muslim women would want to wear them for Allah also.It would be a shame if Nancy turned out to be a better muslima, than those without scarves, and in mini skirts.
Nancy has gone to Greenland or somewhere to look at glaciers, I bet she is still wearing the scarf she wore in Syria. Annonomous sources say she has not taken it off, even once, she even sleeps with it on...now that's a good muslima...

....most of the women in Islamic countries are longing for the day that they can shed the awful 7th century Muslim clothes and join the rest of the women in the world...The only reason the Muslim women dress the way they do is because they face death if they dress otherwise...

Free choice ? Sounds like the choice people get when a mafia Don makes an offer... a reasonable offer a person can't refuse.

eWearing the viel is opional for muslim woman to wear. I visit than sick muslim in the hospital his mother and wife where there along with his brother and his wife with two teenager one man and one woman the teenager woman didnot wear the headscarf and nobody force her to wear one.But she was modest dress blue jean and t-shirt with sleves drown to her waist like a good muslim woman she can wait untril she married to wear the headscraf. You can buy on line swimsuit which than respectiable muslim woman can wear to the beach or pool to swim with it cover the whole body includeing the head.
