Iran makes arrests over articles "insulting" Islam

Sharia Alert. From Reuters:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Up to five people have been arrested for involvement in publishing articles seen as insulting to Islam, a day after they sparked protests by hardline religious students, Iran's judiciary said on Wednesday.
Hundreds of students demonstrated and some university classes were cancelled in a "day of mourning" on Tuesday to protest against the articles that reportedly appeared in four student publications at a prominent Tehran university.

A proportional response would apparently be insulting as well.

Alireza Jamshidi, a spokesman for the conservative-controlled judiciary, said four or five people, none of them students, had been arrested but gave no further details about the case.
"Insulting sacred values is a crime mentioned in Islamic law," he was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency, referring to sharia law introduced in Iran after the 1979 Islamic revolution.
Iranian universities are often the scene of rivalries between conservative, religious students and pro-reform groups demanding more political rights in the Islamic Republic.
Both camps regularly print their own student publications, but those who usually publish the four named by Iranian media denied involvement. The media did not disclose details of the articles apart from describing them as disrespectful to Islam.
"In Islamic society it is expected from the judiciary system to take action against insulting Imams (descendants of the Prophet Mohammad revered by Shi'ite Muslims) and sacred values," Jamshidi said.
Tehran's Amir Kabir University, one of the capital's largest, was in the past known as a hotbed of student activism.
At the same university last December, dozens of students burned pictures of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and threw firecrackers in an apparent effort to disrupt his speech.

Islamic university - there's an oxymoron for you.

I always thought universities were supposed to be places to exchange ideas, to enlighten, to explore, to debate - oh, I forgot. There is no debate, no enlightenment allowed in islam.

Iranian students played a major part in the ousting of Shah Pahlavi in Jan 1979. Ayatollah Khomeni taking power, following up in Nov 1979 with the takeover of the American Embassy...

....These Iranian students worry the Iranian ruling elite...

We've been insulted! For Allah's sake, stop thinking...and REACT!

If this alone doesn't scream "anti-civilization" then what does?

Said this before: Moslems are the only people who react violently to having the truth told about them and their "religion" and that tells all you need to know about their belief system.

..Indeed, Muslims do hate the truth...especially when the infidel knows it...

It appears that Islam is exceptionally thin-skinned.

For a second, I was hoping they were demonstrating in favour of free speech.

And the University of Oregon is paying close attention to learn what to do when they have people trying to write articles badmouthing islam. They already have muslims censoring the articles that go into their newspaper(of course, bashing Jews and Christians is ok).

Did these "articles" report that Mohammed (pb&j) was a pedophile?

Nah, couldn't be that, since Khomeini sanctified it in Iran.

Which "sacred values" were criticized?

Assassinating women poets?

Robbing passing caravans?

Lying to you neighbors?

Breaking sworn treaties?

Murdering anyone who tries to leave your cult?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Those people need a rebellion or popular uprising and get rid of the 'stinkers for Allah' that are in charge.

Setting terribly harmful misnomers aside, this quote reminds me of the Dean's Office in any number of American universities, from Andover to Durham to West Lafayette to Austin to Minneapolis to Boulder to Berkeley.

And once the gay activists insert the concept of "hate crimes" into the US Constitution, writ backwards of course, our already corrupt judiciary, the real judiciary, the one that if challenged projects itself from the business end of a gun barrel (a Sheriff's if local; a US Marshal's if federal) will then be kept busy enforcing Sharia violations.

That way no one will be offended, violated, or otherwise upset, for this deconstruction of our nation, our freedom and our lives are all necessitated by the urgent need for sensitivity.

Except loyal Americans, of course.

Fundamentalists use charisma to peddle devotion, piety, worship, eternal destiny, and their need to spread Islam. They highlight the requirement for jihad, and the need to memorize divine texts. They make Muslims feel uneasy about themselves. They create the problem, unseen reality, alternative universe, and obsession. They say Muslims lack purpose, and they have the answer. They expect full adherence, day and night. They tell Muslims how to dress, what to eat, and which time to pray. Questioning their authority is discouraged. They focus on the past, and have pre-packed answers from ancient texts. They use circular logic; belief is superior but Allah is never pleased, unbelief is evil, and will lead to eternal torture. They offer no guidance on making individual choices or on self-development. They promote irresponsibility, immaturity and immorality, and repress personal growth, when measured against western ethics and morals. This fixation can suppress Muslim life.

Instead, Muslims can voluntarily socialize, build friendships, and seek challenges in the path to peace and security. They can use reason, truth, positive thinking, and using creative talents and abilities. Making decisions, pursing opportunities, finding solutions, and doing what is naturally right in human society, is individual responsibility and purpose.
