TEHRAN, May 13, 2007 (AFP) - Iranian police have prevented 50 women from boarding flights in their ongoing crackdown on dress styles deemed to be out of line with Islamic dress rules, officials said on Sunday.
"Fifty badly-veiled women were prevented from boarding domestic and international flights for failing to respect Islamic dress rules," said the head of airport police Mamoud Bot-Shekane, according to the Fars news agency.
He said that the airport police have handed out "17,135 warnings to women who are not fully respecting the Islamic veil and 850 of them have had to make a written pledge to respect the veil more."
Out of these, the cases of 80 women as well as 50 men have been sent to the judicial authorities, he added.
Iran's police have been enforcing a nationwide crackdown on slack dressing for the past three weeks -- a regular pre-summer event that has been pursued with increased vehemence this year.
Women in Iran are obliged to cover all bodily contours and their heads but in recent years many have pushed the boundaries by showing off naked ankles and fashionably styled hair beneath their headscarves.
Some conservatives have applauded the crackdown as important to protect the security of society but moderates have publicly questioned whether Iran would be better off tackling poverty and crime rather than slack dressing.
But minding other people's business is so much easier.
Iran's police chief Esmaeeli Ahmadi Moghadam has insisted that the crackdown is not temporary and will continue.
Hard to believe this is the 21st century when reading such stories.
Good job they're on the ball, wouldn't want them to deal with poverty, illiteracy, or basic health care, well just let the west do that stuff.

Actually some translations read thus:
"A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate. Which is the correct translation? Can anyone tell me?
It is not clear. Did he say “sodomising the child is OK” or not? Obviously Khomeini was a monster but how much of a monster?
I been researching some crime statistics and I am unable to find one case of a pervert convicted with an ankle fetish....

I don't know the answer, but it looks like the sodomy part might be implied, possibly based on the definition of the word translated as "penetrate".
If so, then the later translation is probably more literal, omitting the unsavory implications to make it somewhat less disgusting to English-speaking audiences.
The latter translation also uses "harmed" instead of "damaged", which might possibly be more evidence that the translation is misleading. "Damaged" could be in reference to women as property, with the loss of their virginity making them "damaged goods", so to speak. Sodomy would not then cause "damage".
Again, this is purely speculation, based on my analysis of the two translations.

I certainly hope this trend doesn't catch on here in America. Imagine going to the airport and being told they don't like your hair or attire?
And, then, instead of getting the benefit of Isaac Mizrahi with his wonderful sketch pad, some big guy with a five o'clock shadow tells you his camel has better legs and to go home and cover yourself up! Or, their version of Clinton and Stacy yell, "Surprise, you're on What Not To Wear and you're going to prison for that ensemble, missy!" And, their version of "The Look for Less," is probably, "The Look of Head-Less."
Of course, there is an up side to the burka. Burka Fridays. Covers the pajamas quite well. Still, Isaac with sketch pad, makes me think these women are getting a bad deal.
An Iranian friend of mine just came back from Iran. He told me his wife was approached in Tehran by a woman in full chador who claimed to be an Islamic guard. This woman began to harangue my friend's wife for not dressing Islamically. My friend was nearby with his uncle and brother when he saw his wife being harrassed. He then turned the tables in a most effective matter.
He walked up to the hijabed woman and then began pointing at her and shouting loudly that she was a prostitute who offered him and the other two men oral sex for 50 rials. He kept shouting until some male police officers arrived. The three men then demanded the Islamic woman guard be arrested for solicitation for prostitution. The woman then tried to run away while the three men kept shouting she was whore. Needless to say, his wife had successfully "disappeared" into a nearby store while all this was happening.
