Does anyone here know the deep history of this part of Thailand? People talk about how it was a 'sultanate' at one time, and then got 'annexed' by Thailand. But it can't have been a sultanate in the beginning...what was it before it was a sultanate and how long had it been a sultanate? Can anyone tell me?

We need some background on places like southern Thailand and southern Philippines and Mindanao.

Even Indonesia wasn't majority Muslim to start with - it was Hindu and animist - Bali is a relic of that period. Indonesia only 'Islamised' in the mid-15th century.

I found one or two things that might interest you, but I am sure there are many who know more than I do about this.
Apparently the southern provinces were incorporated into Thailand over a century ago but the cause of the recent violence might be a simple one:

Now WHY would that be I wonder? And why has the mainstream media happily hastened to HELP this "painting" (read "falsification") by the Thai government?

Is the Thai government at all interested in protecting its citizens? The Thai king isn't just a figurehead - he is almost worshiped in Thailand. Why doesn't he simply come out and state that the slaughter of Thai citizens will not be tolerated, and put the army on the border with Malaya?

The Thai King, like most surrounded by Islamist-psychopaths, fears more for his life than those of his people. The savagery and butchery of this couple of innocents is, though not unimportant, the, mere, tip of the proverbial Islamic death-cult.
Islam detests evolution and prefers the remote and backward times of Mohammed. Their, sole, intent is to drag civilisation backwards into their chosen and perverse, homicidal time-warp.
This has been the case since time; moderates are no different than their so-called radical counterparts. The former are the spectators of Islam’s bloodletting sport. This, however, does not make them any less culpable for the viciously murderous actions of their chosen “team”!

While the Thai king is considered a sacred figure and stays above petty politics, he has made numerous statements against the jihad. Speaking to the military academy, he said that all Thai citizens must be loyal to Thailand and those who commit murder and terrorism have separated themselves from any claims of protection. The US ambassador has even criticized the king for supporting his own military and the US State Department has threatened economic sanctions against Thailand for its "failure to reach a political solution with the insurgents". The Americans even tried to force the Thai government to grant autonomy to the south so they can live under Sharia. The Thais made a few statements to keep the Americans mollified but so far have resisted the pressure.

Many in the Thai government and army want to crush the Muslims today just like they crushed the communists in in the early 1970s. The problem is Thailand has not been able to wean itself completely from US influence. Fortunately, China's economic influence is increasing in Thailand and when the Thais can finally count on China to counter-balance the US, we can expect their military to move with full force, but not before.

Islam is a thrill kill machine...I believe many of the attacks by Muslims is just for target practice, an action taken just to see blood....Obvioulsy fruit pickers pose no threat to either body or lifestyle...they were killed just for the thrill or maybe as some sort of initiation rite to a militant Islamic organization....

Do we have English-speaking Thai lurkers reading here who could tell us where to look to find a Thai paper or radio station that has an English-language section, so messages of condolence (addressed to the families of jihad victims) and encouragement/ elucidation (to relevant Thai figures, even the King himself) may be sent by any jihadwatcher with the time? People and governments need to know they are not alone. Has anyone translated Spencer's books or Bat Ye'or's The Dhimmi into Thai? Educated people often read English but this needs to go further.

How about some of us - say, retirees with some time on their hands - vow ourselves to send a written message of condolence and strong anti-Islam counsel to the appropriate consulate or embassy in every jihadwatcher's country, every time one of these ghastly jihad murders occurs in an embattled non-Muslim-majority country? Citizen-to-citizen stuff. Or did anyone here send a 'rah! rah!' message to the Ethiopian consulate/ embassy in the USA/Canada/ Australia/ UK...when the Ethiopians pounced in Somalia? Similarly, whenever word comes out about persecution of non-Muslim minorities - send messages (e.g, to Chaldean/ Assyrian Christians in USA, Coptic Christian leaders) and donate to Barnabas Fund or suchlike.

A third suggestion: get a group together and try a Jericho-style silent march, round and round (say) the Saudi Arabian, Malaysian, Pakistani, Iranian embassies in, say, Washington or Canberra or London. Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, secularists - turn up each day and do it for seven days. Wear mourning; lay flowers for Islam's multitudes of victims and carry signs saying NO to Sharia. NO to Jizya. NO to the dhimma. NO to jihad. On the seventh day finish off by praying and singing LOUDLY. And do it every few months, with a list of that period's victims of jihad all ready to give to any media who turn up.

Actually I have to disagree with one thing just a little.. if loads of people don't gas up on a given day it will send a message that we are AWARE and that we are COMMUNICATING something. Even if we gas up the day before and after.

We can, of course stay away for good from Citgo [Venezuela] and Aramco [SOWdi Barbaria]...

Don't discount the "little things" as they say in Baseball..

The homeruns will come.. after you get a runner on via a walk or a bunt or a cheapo hit..

Another thing is we need NUMBERS.. so we have to make the entry-point for action as easy as possible.. from which more action will arise.

That is why I now think a HUGE turnout at the ballot box will be an eye-opener to them - especially when we write in all sorts of DADA candidtes.

If a HUGE number of people bother to show up merely to express their discontent then this will be like an Earthquake to the powers-that-be who keep taking us and our acquiescence for granted.

I believe the ballot is more effective than anything else at this time.

Calling and emailing our 'representatives' is all good and dandy.. the opposition is way more versed and effective at that.

And Special Interest Money speaks louder than anything.. to both 'parties'.

The ONE thing we have is the power to elect or to un-elect.

A HUGE show of discontent will give rise to other candidates and hopefully even other parties than what we have so far.

The MORE people show up and vote means we aren't swayed by ads and propaganda that their money buys them.. it means that we are PISSED OFF and well-informed!

Which will, of course result in "better offers" as far as genuine "leadership" is concerned.

The resounding vote with an unusually high turnout in France for M. Sarko is a welcome example of the voters expressing their discontent at the ballot box.

Let us from now on exercise that right - until they take it away from us.
