Pakistan’s woman tourism minister tendered her resignation today after hardline Islamic clerics accused her of obscenity for hugging her instructor after a charity parachute jump.Nilofar Bakhtiar, the Federal Minister for Tourism, was pictured wearing a brightly coloured jumpsuit and hugging her instructor after a tandem jump to raise money for child victims of the earthquake that struck Pakistan in October 2005.
The images provoked the wrath of clerics in Islamabad, who accused Ms Bakhtiar of posing in an obscene manner and violating the Islamic moral norms.
A religious court set up by the clerics at a radical mosque in Islamabad issued a fatwa, or religious edict, against Ms Bakhtiar when the photographs first appeared in local newspapers last month.
They urged the Government to punish her and fire her from the Cabinet. Ms Bakhtiar failed to win the support of Cabinet colleagues and the Government appeared to cave in to the demands of the militants.
As she announced her intention to resign today, Ms Bakhtiar complained of a campaign of intimidation against her.

However, it may take awhile for her to get used to Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans, Farengi, Cardassians, etc.

a charity event to help children. Yeah, she must have just been a horrible person to be jumping out of planes for children. I just do not understand these people. It is beyond my comprehension. She probably has death threats against her now for her charitable work.
On the other hand, tourism minister of Pakistan sounds like a dead end job to me - hopefully she can get a much more practical and fulfilling job now.
Maybe after India wakes up, conquers Islamabad and revokes partition, Nilofar Bakhtiar can become Prime Minister of a free Pakistan.

Some 15 years ago, on Usenet, I recall this topic about whether India and Pakistan should re-unite came up on that newsgroup soc.culture.indian. From what I recall, most Indians were opposed to it, on the grounds that it would sink India's economy. And that was before India's economic boom that started in 1998.
Interestingly, none of the Indian posters there - including Hindutva posters - opposed re-unification on the grounds that India would then be some 35% Islamic. In fact, the main thing that most RSS/BJP activists hold against Muslims is their treachery in creating Pakistan. But I don't think that the root problem - that of Muslim attitudes towards Infidels, buttressed by Islamic statements about Infidels - was factored in people's stated sentiments. And I don't think they were hiding it - they were anti-Muslim on other things, like Babri Masjid, which was the hottest issue at the time.
I know where many Indians - particularly of my parents' generation come from when they wish for the sub-continent to re-unite, but I, for one, am opposed to India annexing either Pakistan or Bangladesh without de-Islamifying them, and converting them into Sikhism/Hinduism in case of the former, and Hinduism/Buddhism in case of the latter.
In other words, don't advocate eating the snake without removing the poison glands.
I hope she is not silly enough to go back to Pakistan. After that show of indecency in the arms of an infidel, she must be killed. Her family needs to be killed too, to send a message that this sort of thing will not be tolerated in Pakistan - even if it was in France.
Besides, skydiving is a non-islamic activity for only allah can take a place in the heavens dressed in nylon. Regarding tourism to Pakistan JW watchers might be amused to know that the British Foreign Office maintains three “safe houses” there to help British-born Muslim girls escape the country. Naturally this is not public knowledge but was briefly mentioned on a BBC radio programme about forced marriages a few years ago.
The only Pakistani tourists seen these days are seen carrying AK47s and are spending time assaulting bicycle riding ice cream vendors and barber shop owners....Other "tourists" are seeking out people listening to music or watching soccer games on TV....The "tourists" are having a grand time in the opium dens rediscovering their roots in a "religion" founded long ago by some 7th century caravan raiding sexual pervert....

Perhaps "revokes partition" was a poor choice of words. Certainly India doesn't need more Muslims. Instead, I think India should conquer Pakistan and break it up into several small satellite states such as Sindh, Baluchistan, Swat, and Punjab. These would be controlled by India but not be able to vote in India. These little Muslim countries would be self-governing but India would control foreign policy and defense as well as implementing de-Islamization.
Nilofar Bakhtiar could be PM of one of the satellite states as long as she kept the confidence of the Indian-appointed viceroy.

As far as I can remember the character of Dr. Bashir wasn't that religiously specific. He could have been Muslim, Druze, Christian, or secular. However, the actor Alexander Siddiq does describe himself as a nominal Muslim. He is half-English and half-Sudanese. His maternal uncle is English actor Malcolm McDowell, and his paternal uncle is the former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi. From 1997–2001 he was married to co-star Nana Visitor who is not Muslim.
