Well who really cares whom this man was, until an iron fist is used against all of islam and its seekers of death, this will be a long war. Fight to win, reconstruction will come later.
This is somewhat of an unrelated thought, but I was thinking that, if we really are in for a multi-generational war with Islam, and they start attacking our cities with nuclear weapons (as they want to), and we need many soldiers to fight their hordes, then we really need to start raising soldiers in deliberate training schools, like the Spartans did, to even the odds - although taking children and raising them to be soldiers will take a lot of changes in Western and US society.
But then it struck me that Islam has already made this innovation. We think of their madrassas as random developments of their culture - but I think they could be more sinister than that - they represent the Islamic world's effort to create an army of brain-washed soldiers for the coming war between Islam and the West. We may have high-tech soldiers but they will not want to die, unlike the Borg that Islam will send at us in endless waves - with bombs strapped to them.
The point is that THEY are able to adapt to the real world situation, while we are not - we are still caught up in old, dying paradigms, while we (including self-satisfied people on this site) gloat about their "rigid" and "inflexible" society! This shows our greatest weakness - looking at the Islamic world through our own fantasies of superiority and invincibility. Sadly, our leaders still harbor these perceptions, hence the disaster in Iraq.

i think our society is actually thriving, despite the attempts at a welfare state by the left. you just have to look in the red states to find more/better examples of it.
you're right, islamists are more willing to die that we are. but there's one point about us that you're overlooking...we are free.
freedom galvanizes people when that freedom is threatened. love of that freedom creates in people a willingness to die for it...people like me. sparta was free, and that's what spartans died for, fighters or not.
sparta may have trained fighters from childhood, but our true professional fighters are not that different. the people who need the training are civilians, in my opinion. We've raised a bunch of unpatriotic self-indulgent whiners of which Sparta would disapprove.
Well, however one sizes it up, one thing isn't deniable...one less maniac to deal with, and this one was way up the chain of command so it was a big hit.
