British Prime Minister Tony Blair says a decade in office has taught him that the West should not be afraid of standing by its values in facing up to radical Islam.“The West must show that it believes in its own values,” Blair told journalists from several European newspapers, including yesterday’s edition of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung of Germany, as he prepares to announce his departure from Downing Street.
“We must show the Muslim world that we let our values apply to everyone. That’s why Guantanamo (Bay) is an issue for people,” Blair said, in comments translated from German.
“But we are also on the defensive because we are not energetic in contradicting the opinion of radical Muslims who want to convince us that terrorism somehow has something to do with our behaviour.”
Blair has long been in favour of binding predominantly Muslim Turkey to the European Union to create a bridge between Europe and the Muslim world. He conceded that Turkey has a long way to go before it is ready to join the EU, but said it would be a “disgrace” if Europe’s club of nations went back on its promises to the Turks.
“I firmly believe that Europe should offer a place to Turkey. But I also know that beforehand complicated problems must be resolved."
"Most importantly," the Prime Minister continued, "is the fundamental hostility at the heart of Islam toward the non-Mulsim world. Until this fact is appreciated, sound policy with respect to Islam will be impossible. We must understand - however uncomfortable the truth may be - that Islam presents an existential threat to Western civilization that cannot be mitigated or negotiated away. We are in a struggle for our lives that can only be won through great sacrifice and hardship and the jettisoning of many widely-held but misleading conceptions of the world. As I prepare to leave office, I say to my fellow countrymen and to all those in the West who cherish their heritage, the time to stand up and be counted is now. We are called today to the banner of our forbears who defended the European heritage against centuries of Muslim attack. With the help of Almighty God, we shall make them proud!"

The Conservative Party also say that they are in favour of letting Turkey in the EU. It seems that the main political parties here are canvassing the Muslim vote. The situation at the moment doesn't look good for Blighty.

The most important thing western societies must do is preserve, and protect their foundations from any form of Islamic entrenchment at all costs. First and foremost, the EU and America must recognize and understand the aggressive and determined nature of Islam and its desire to bring the impositions of its ideology upon all western societies.
The people of western societies must stand up and protest if they see any of their politicians bending over a bit to far to groups like CAIR in America. Already Americans who are waking up to this aggressive ideology and its determination to bring Sharia law and a governance of a world established caliphate. Many of us in America are already aware of certain politicians that in our congress are bending a bit to far when it comes to the influences of the Muslim communities, do we need to mention dearbornistan, Michigan, or Minneapolis, Minnesota? We must carefully watch the political left in America who demonstrate time and time again their hostility towards America's Constitution and Americas foundations and seem almost blinded by the intrusion of the aggressive Ideology of what makes up Islam. The left has demonstrated that they are not willing to defend America's heritage and it's foundations.
Just come and watch a protest rally in San Francisco or walk down the Venice beach walk South of Santa Monica sometime and you will see what I mean. You will see hate America literature, from conspiracy theories to demands for executions of the President of the United States. The amazing thing is that when you confront these people you find out almost immediately how ignorant they are if you ask the right questions. Most of the time you get a barrage of conspiracy theories, and hate rheteric at adnauseam that has no basis in truth.
Question for those who live in Britain or who follow Brit politics... What about Blair's successsor? France is about to elect a conservative who appears quite cognizant of the threat of unlimited Muslim immigration. Any similarly minded candidate(s) in Britain?

I suppose he refers to tolerance of all cultures, which seems to have assumed the position of revealed truth. Tolerance, like all things must have limits, and stretching it the extent that leads to the extinction of our civilisation, is just plain stupid.
Ruth Edwards, Melanie Phillips or Mark Steyn, write in the same vein as Cassandra ie "Woe is us, and thrice woe, we are doomed, doomed..". None of them suggest any but the most anodyne policies, and ignore the only way to save civilisation - a divorce when two cultures are as incompatible as they can be i.e., a free, liberal and tolerant society, and a repressed, regimented, aggressive and totalitarian society such as an Islamic one. Such a policy may one day offer a ray of hope to Muslims in the future.
We are duty bound by obligation to the hundreds of thousands of young men who died to make this civilisation come about, and an obligation as well duty to future generations.

Blair is worried about his legacy. He is aware that future historians i.e., if we win this war, will blame his period of tenureship as PM, as the one that jeopardised and put in great peril, the very existence of Britain.
I can forgive Blair of all the incompetance in the economic running of the country - his government's failure in education, law and order and other internal matters, but not his opening the door to Muslim immigration to replace the Labour party's lost working class vote. This policy, in the fullness of time, will lead to a religious civil war in Britain.

Not so simple. Churchill was Prime Minister between 1951 and 1955 when immigration to Britain from the British Commonwealth (including Muslim Pakistan) gathered pace. Though he may have been personally against that, he was unable to influence his own government, and so must share some of the blame.

I don't think Winnie was for the Islamic invitation to self-immolation that grew from the late 1960's onward in Britain. (And, from the 1965 immigration "reform" bill in the U.S.)
Judging from his valient defense of Britain druing her "darkest hour", I'm sure he would have been retching to see what wretches the politicos of the U.K. have become and how they continue to sell Britain out.
The 1950's immigrants to the U.K. seem more like Anglicized colonials, who had pre-adapted to English mores before they came, and remained steadfast for assimilation once there. (And their numbers were miniscule.)
Since then, a different influx has arrived in England. The post-PLO, post-1967 Arab-Israeli War (resentful of the West) crowd, eager to use the money provided for "refugees" (etc.) by the naive and overly-tolerant Brits as a way to start a new front for the global jihad.

DP, any divorce will take decades, and that's only after all immigration is halted. If one were to sit down and talk reasonably with Muslim populations, they will tell us right where to go. Oil and water are not mixable.

Looks like his successor will be Gordon Brown, the financial wizard who ruined British non-state occupational pension schemes. Who knows what he really thinks about what concerns us all on this site? I suspect he’s no Sarkozy, though. Still, there’s got to be a general election in the next two or three years. And Cameron, the probable alternative? Who knows, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Sorry, Robert, I've just realized that it was Greg I should have been addressing!
I'm sure much of Blair's enthusiasm for Turkey eventually joining the EU is down to his belief in remaining in step with the Americans, who are the most eager of all to see them in. I wouldn't be surprised if Brown believed that, eventually, free trade and market forces will see off 'radical Islam' in some mystical sort of way.
I think a general election has to be called after 5 years but the convention is to call one every 4 years. Since the last one was in 2005 the next one should be in 2009, barring startlingly dramatic developments - one has to be called if the government loses a motion of no confidence, in the house, and a coalition cannot be put together to form a working majority to replace it.
Actually PM's resign on motions of no confidence- as long as enough of their own party vote against them. I think I'm getting out of my depth here - I wish they would write the damned constitution down.
