THE HAGUE, The Netherlands -- A local council in the Netherlands has been censured for cutting welfare payments to a Muslim woman who could not find work due to her preference for the burqa, an Islamic garment that covers the eyes.A court in Amsterdam ordered the Diemen district authorities to pay more than a year's worth of blocked welfare payments as well as the woman's legal fees.
A judge said that the authorities' decision to stop payments in April last year was "very heavy" and criticized them for failing to take Islamic customs into account....
Three employers had refused to hire the woman due to her preference for the garment. The woman had rejected a fourth job as a telephone marketer because it involved a lottery business, saying that gambling was forbidden under Islam.

Actually, this is a pretty hotly debated issue among Muslims themselves. There is a lot of dispute over the 2 main verses concerning hijab - 24:31 and 33:59.

In general though I get the impression that the mainstream view is that niqab is recommended (Mo's wives after all were fully veiled) but not obligatory (i.e. one doesn't fall into sin for not wearing it).
If western courts are going to start making rulings concerning Muslims based on Islamic law (rather than upon western traditions and laws as they should), then they ought to at least familiarize themselves with the most liberal islamic laws available to Muslims themselves and rule in that direction.

An ex-girlfriend of mine, from the 80s, not bright, has a bi-polar disorder(manic-depression to you and me), she tried to commit suicide a few years ago, she's that bad. Periodically she has to attend interviews and fill out forms to justify her illness, and why she can't work etc etc.
She asks me to help her with the forms. Basically the stuff on the forms effects her invalidity benefit, how much she gets.
Ten to twenty years ago, I'd have filled them out accurately and honestly.
Now, my thoughts turn to councils building large many bedroomed council houses for asian families, with the toilets facing away from mecca(for christs sake), the countless refuges and funds set up for racial minorities, and immigrants, which soak up billions supporting people who can't read or write and are therefore effectively unemployable. The billions wasted in foreign countries, given in aid, and then converted into arms(it's a miracle).
The white lower classes stuffed into damp two/three bedroom flats with five kids, next to first generation immigrants(still, how could this be?), who soak up all the resources they should get.
And I basically use my degree in psychology to good effect. Because now I think, well it's a gravy train of lies. She used to have plain old depression, until I created the symptoms for a bi-polar disorder, but it's all more money, and why not?

If only the liberal elites engineering these policies understood what you are saying! My take on it is that they are so used to living in a western society of law abiding citizens that has taken centuries to accomplish and works precisely because the average person has been given over time, so much good reason to trust the laws, that he abides by those laws willingly. Now apparently, the liberal elites think this sort of situation is the status quo of human nature! No! It's not!
They seem to think that this sort of law-abidingness (for lack of a better word) on the part of native westerners is just some natural part of their nature or something, never to be altered so that one can merely introduce into this harmonious, well-functioning society a bunch of law breakers and that if we just make an exception for them (being disadvantaged), the whole system will still remain intact, except for those exceptions to the law whom all the rest of the hard-wired law-abiding citizens will simply absorb, while continuing to remain law-abiding citizens themselves.
Well - how stupid can you get?? It won't take long under such circumstances for the average law-abiding citizen of the west to perceive the unfairness of it all and start disregarding the law himself (and why wouldn't he?). Everything from avoiding his taxes if he can (like the immigrants get away with) to border agents switching sides (why play by the rules if you can get thrown in prison for it when you can make big bucks joining the other side and smuggling drugs?)
Pretty soon, the whole system descends into anarchy. Surely the liberal elites engineering all this can't have overlooked such fundamental rules of human nature? I'm seriously afraid they may have done exactly that. They are completely assuming that the status quo of fundamentally law abiding westerners will continue undisturbed and unchanged and that all they have to do is engineer the introduction of a fundamentally lawless and manipulative element into that seemingly stable system, which will somehow then just absorb that corruption and lawlessness back into that apparently stable system, like ripples back into the stillness of the pond.
