What bothered me about it was the total absence of any sense that something had gone wrong with the democracy strategy, since Hamas was elected. Aren't there other factors at work as well, such as the obvious religious component, as this item illustrates?
A major reason Hamas won was because of Fatah's corruption, so why not at least demand better aid monitoring. And how about a little soul-searching and humility in the face of the setback. It really makes me think that Hugh's pessimistic view of Bush is correct.

What is called here a "religious compenent" is in fact almost everything. Without understanding the central role of Islam, without recognizing that Islam, or rather the tenets of Islam, and the attitudes, and atmospherics that naturally arise in states and societies suffused with Islam, are at the center of everything with which Muslim states or peoples are linked -- and of course the Arab war on Israel is merely a Lesser Jihad (one which some of the local "Palestinian" islamochristians, out of fear or internalized identification with the local Muslims, have foolishly also promoted), and can be best explained and understood as such -- and not as the phony "nationalist" struggle of a "Palestinian" people who were carefully created precisely in order to re-package, and more acceptbaly present to the outside world, that Lesser Jihad.
Islam is not a "component" but rather the central element, the element that explains all kinds of things, not least those supposedly "secular" movements, such as Ba'athism, that can best be understood only in the context of the local despots wishing to hold in check the mosque as a center of rival power, in Syria becaue the despots were and are the Alawites (whom Sunni Muslims do not even regard as real Muslims, given their cult of Mary) and in Iraq becaue the Sunni Arab despots needed a useful cover for that despotism, given their small numbers, and "Ba'athism" -- which allowed a few Shi'a Arabs, Kurds, and even Christians the illusion that they could, by entering the Party, share in politial power and so, too, in a way, could the Shi'a, the Kurds, and the Christians as groups -- which was false, but useful).
If there is any "struggle" at all among "Palestinians" or for that matter among Arab Muslims elsewhere, it is between the uncomrpomising True Believers, who wish to pursue Jihad openly, through warfare, without dealy, and the slightly less-true True Believers, who want to take their time, use all the instruments of Jihad and not merely warfare, and mainly, wish to enjoy for themselves and their families, the benefits of Western aid -- that is, Jizyah -- which requires just an absolute minimum of uttering a phrase or two, and pretending, here and there, not to be total enemies of the West, which West has at present leaders, or those "taking a leadership role," quite eager to participate in this charade, and to throw Israel to the wolves, in the vain hope that somehow such matters as the islamization of Western Europe will disappear, or somehow resolve themselves.

I can see the endgame already. It is true that many followers of Islam are a bit lost...not a lot ..but a bit.
This has meant that they have tried to get to Allah earlier than perhaps they should...and that's just plain stupid.
Similarily I have some complaints that I have taken to Allah SWT ...but they are mostly in the form of giving him a slight ticking off....he is merciful so I know that he will understand and forgive me.
In particular my complaint has been that Allah SWT gave Muhd SAW a myriad of choices of womens to marry...but crucially no male offspring to carry on the good name of Muhd SAW.
Muhd SAW had a couple of daughter (May Allah be pleased with them) ...but his sons died at an early age.
I forget how many wives he had...but I think it was over 20...and none could give him sons to carry forward his seed.
Now this has been catastrophic IMHO. So many Ahcmed, Sammeullah and Abdullah (not Tom, dick & harry) rise up to say "this is what the prophet would have said or done".

I read through Reverend Sutter's 65 page manifesto against Spencer which can basically be summed up as stating that Spencer is committing treason against the US by aiding and abetting bin Laden's interpretation of Islam and hence aiding and abetting the enemy.
Of course if UBL is so fond of Spencer and vica versa, one would wonder why it is that Adam Gadaghn actually cited Spencer by name as one of the prime enemies of islam.
While Sutter argues against all sorts of logical fallacies such as ad hominem, while making ad hominem attacks against Spencer, e.g. by claiming that he motivated purely by financial gain, he also makes completely false statements to the effect that only bin Laden and Spencer subscribe to something that is obviously Islamically false - "convert or die". But of course Spencer has made clear numerous times that that is false and that islam offers the "people of the book" 3 options - convert, die or pay the jizya tribute.
He also accuses Spencer of only focusing on Islamic terrorism instead of all these dangerous domestic and Christian extremists that the FBI is supposedly focusing on. But what sort of criticism is that? Spencer's site focuses on islamic jihad. Where is his obligation to place an equal focus on every other extremist sect in the world? it is up to the reader to determine for himself where he thinks the most threat in the modern world lies. There is nothing stopping someone from starting a website focusing on other forms of extremism and obviously if enough people are concerned about it they will read the site.
Sutter points out that only the caliph can technically wage jihad, which of course Spencer has acknowledged. Spencer has made clear that this is why UBL couches his calls to jihad in defensive language. This is also why so many Muslims would like to see the reinstution of the caliphate. And how is the fact that only the caliph can wage offensive jihad supposed to be comforting anyway? The caliphate was only abolished less than a 100 years ago. No sooner was it abolished that all this "defensive" jihad started up. Sutter has certainly bought the "defensive jihad" line hook, line and sinker. Perhpas he would explain how islam exploded out of the Arabian peninsula and conquered 1/2 the known world in about 100 years if his intrpretation of jihad is correct?
Sutter states that dhimmitude only applies under a sharia state and that only Iran is currently a pure Sharia state. He notes that even Saudi Arabia doesn't operate under pure Sharia law. Yeah - well Saudi Arabia doesn't permit the free practice of any religion other than Islam! Why don't you look around the world and see how things are going for Christians in pakistan and Egypt for starters. Meanwhile, while Sutter tries to equate an immigration policy of stopping further Muslim immigration to the west with a policy of "ethnic cleansing", he has nothing to say about the real ethnic cleansing of all Christians and jews and Hindus from Muslim majority countries.
Finally, Sutter tries to make Spencer responsible for the creation of Muslim extremists (part of his charge of treason) for noting that Muslim extremists have orthodox Islam on their side. This is an insane charge as Spencer has noted many times. Sutter looks fondly at laws that would permit Spencer's website to be shut down.
Well Reverend, since most of the world apparently sees things as you do - we shall have a most excellent example of this benign Islam you believe in once Europe is islamicized. If history is any guide (but then you're not interested in history apparently) - my expectation is that we'll see a slow squeezing of the Jews and Christians (i.e. ethnic cleansing)in Europe over time that has followed the spread of islam everywhere. If you succeed in demonizing and silencing Spencer for trying to alert the world to these patterns the world over by pointing out the foundations of Muslim behavior in islamic texts, we'll have you to partially thank for it. But it seems that something that should be added to that is the dubious assumption that any Muslim would seek religious guidance as to the tenets of his faith from an infidel like Spencer in the first place! (Especially an infidel with absolutely no credentials to espouse on islam per Sutter's ad hominem charge against Spencer). If Spencer is wrong he is merely wrong. It is monstrous to make him responsible for the very extremism he is reporting upon. I think Sutter takes this tack because the facts on the ground - the mounting evidence every day around the world - doesn't jive with HIS egoistic needs to peddle himself as a preacher against hate. How is he going to resolve this cognitive dissonance between his Islam is a religion of peace assumption in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary every day? Apparently, the old fashioned way - by simply shooting the messenger!!

Beware believing ANY of the "Rev." Sutter's assertions. The lies are so thick in that "report" that it would take a report three times that size to catalogue them all. "Rev." Jim misstates our interaction, he misstates my views, he misstates practically everything that can possibly be misstated. Of course, there is a good deal of libel and defamation in it.
This is, of course, a man who has lied about being an ordained minister (he isn't), lied about his seminary training (he has none, and the place he claims to have degrees from doesn't even give degrees), lied about having been a Navy SEAL (he wasn't), lied about the church he is supposedly affilated with (it doesn't exist, unless it has an unlisted phone number; strange behavior for a church), and lied about much, much more. It is really rather an unhappy story -- I have some information from a person who really is affiliated with a church he claims to have been a former pastor of, and this "Rev." Sutter is a sad, sick individual. He would merit pity if he weren't so determined to destroy others.
I have a friend who worked in a restaurant a few years back and told me that people with faraway, intense looks in their eyes and unwashed, unmended clothing would carry tattered notebooks in, sit in a corner, and write furious nonsensical drivel all day -- or until the place got crowded and they were nudged out. Now these twilight drivelers have internet sites -- to wit our "Rev." Sutter.

I believe that one of the greatest weaknesses of islamic culture is the compartmentalization of women. If only the women would think for themselves as Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Nonie Darwish and others.I do not espouse feminism but in the islamic world they really need it. Keep the conferences going . I would like to attend one day soon. I'd love to meet Nasseem and see her in a rousing debate on the state of women in islam especially now that their homicide martyrdom is generally accepted.

I can’t imagine how frustrating (not to mention insulting) it must be for you to be accused of causing the problem of the very extremism and hate you’re trying to explain and educate us about.
