I have been reading the history of the pre-civil war period. It is fascinating how similar the current reaction of Muslims to Jihad Watch/DhimmiWatch is to William Garrison's Anti-Slavery Liberator magazine. (The comparison fits.)
All Garrison did (he was hard but rightfully so)re slavery was to report the facts, and he was accused of fomenting "hate" for that. (Calhoun and others even wanted to control the US mail on the slavery issue because of Garrison's criticisms of slavery). In fact, there were "speech codes" (the so-called "gag rules") instituted in congress to silence all criticism of slavery as a consequence of Garrison and other "Abolitionists" who were subjecting slavery to critical analysis.
The pro-slavery forces even attempted to extend the "gag rules" to universities and colleges. Former President John Q. Adams fought the "gag rules" bravely and finally partially prevailed on the issue (1844). However, the whole issue (slavery and "free speech") was finally resolved with the Union victory in the Civil War.
The "Slaveocracy" (as J.Q. Adams called it) of the Old South wanted respect for "multiculturalism". They wanted silence with regard to all critical analysis of slavery. The "Slaveocracy" (as J. Q. Adams called it) have a lot in common with Islam. Muslims fear critical analysis and call it "hate" and divisiveness.

The words of Robert are very similar to William Garrison on this issue. Garrison said almost the same thing re Garrison's criticisms of slavery. It's the same thing. It's critical analysis and the reporting of facts being called "hate".

Frank, have you ever had any unreconstructed Confederates try to tell you that the Civil War was not caused by slavery. I have, and it is a maddening experience. These people talk about cultural differences, agrarian economy, trade, and anything else that comes to mind. Just like Muslims, denying the truth. Ironically, the one guy who really understood what John C. Calhoun and the elite of the Old South wanted was Andrew Jackson (himself a Southerner). Jackson said on his death bed that he only had two regrets in life: that he didn't have a faster horse and that he didn't hang John C. Calhoun (during the Nullification Crisis). Jackson saw what was coming and Abe Lincoln was in many ways a product of "Jacksonian Democracy".
Jackson was the first "ordinary man" elected president. He sensed the tyranny that was behind what Adams called "the slaveocracy". They wanted all critical analysis of their belief-system shut down. It was a major issue in congress and elsewhere in the decades prior to the Civil War. They wanted any criticism of their belief-system labeled as "hate".

The scariest thing to me is it has all been tried before and we see the result. But our Reps seem to have never studied American history. They also seem unaware of what the Constitution says. They put through a bill that a high school senior who is thinking about entering law could shoot down in court with very little effort. Are our Reps stupid, ignorant, lazy, preoccupied or just plain enemies of the Constitution and therefore enemies of the US Armed Forces as well. It seems law enforcement needs tools, tools for what, to use against the rest of us possibly. The country faced worse crisis in the past. In fact, this is happy-bunny time compared to the period prior to the Civil War. It was really bad then. People started to take the law into their own hands (John Brown, etc.). People were beaten and killed for their opinions. It seemed that society was breaking down. However, the election of Lincoln (who was a compromise Republican candidate) produced a leader of great quality who saw that the issue was freedom for all mankind. Lincoln also had roots in the South(born there) and knew that many there (West Virginia, Tennessee, and other places) who agreed with him.
Civil War goes on at all times in a free society. We have one every two years at the ballot box. But when one group tries to impose its beliefs on all, the ballot box can turn into the cane beating box and then into the bullet boxes.

Yes I know, during the Civil war one side of my family was from Kansas, he volunteered for the duration in 61 as a brown headed young man and he saw the conclusion in 65 a much older and fully grey haired man. On the other side we were not slavery advocates from Mississippi, we never owned a slave in the history of the country and my family. He volunteered for the duration in 61 as well out of loyalty to his statesmen. He wasn’t so lucky and came back minus a leg, it is still somewhere around Gettysburg. I suppose that was lucky though as I look at the battles he fought through in getting there, Cold Harbor, Bull Run and quite a few others. Actually they were both lucky and it didn’t slow either one of them down they both went on to lead successful lives in post civil War America. The interesting thing is that when my parents wanted to marry, both sides of the family were not happy even 75 years later.

The divisions of the Civil War ran deep for years afterward. Vicksburg fell to the Union forces on July 4, 1863. If my memory serves me correctly, Vicksburg had no Independence Day Celebration until July 4, 1943 (during World War 2). In my opinion (one guy looking at things) post-WW2 America is very different (in terms of sectional hates) than before WW2. A lot of divisions ended then and after (in my opinion).
In the end, there are no hates like family hates. We are either polite like strangers or love and hate like family-LOL. Be careful of those family feuds.

Evil hates the truth because it then becomes exposed. Islam is 'submission' which is a nicer word for 'slavery'. So any examination of its enslaving conditions of humanity will get 'hate mail' in response. This poor chap who criticizes Robert for telling the truth (keeping him from pursuing more pleasant activities, like music) is part of that evil enslaving cult, whether a true believer or merely useful idiot, to empower evil over truth. The truth is that Islam has proven itself evil and evil and evil over and over and over again. Today some 80% of all conflicts in the world have Islam on at least one side of the equation, and often both. We are the 'abolitionists' who criticize this enslaving faith, and we are the ones who must conquer this evil. But nowadays, I see more and more bigotry and downright nastiness appearing on this site. Petty nationalistic agendas and prejudices are presented, superficially dressed up in an anti-jihadi cloak (see the Serb and Greek bigotry about Albanians in another thread). Yesterday, I had one poster tell me that my country, Britain, cannot be trusted, and was treated to a list of Britain's sins over the past fifty years to boot. Bigotry, petty nationalism and finger-wagging is not the correct way to defeat Islamofascism.

Maybe that was somewhat tongue in cheek but I'm not kidding when I say that when this nightmare is over (if ever) I intend to go back to doing what I was doing for some 30 hours/week above and beyond full-time work for at least 7 years before I found out about Islam - namely printing black and white pictures the old fashioned way in the local darkroom. Ever since I discovered the Islamic menace several years ago though, I haven't set one foot in the place, despite having rolls of film that I never printed.
The point being that it is ludicrous to imagine that most of us are here because "we hate". Good God, I never knew real hate until I found out the truth about Islam and it's history and discovered that we ignorant, naive westerners just going on about our lives were smack in the middle of a history of Islamic hatred and war against infidels that has been going on for 1400 years.
One only has to see the photographs of its many victims - like in the Balkans - with their eyes gouged out, or their genitals cut off and stuffed in their mouths, or the pictures of women being stoned, or the numerous pictures of people beheaded and tortured in the name of Islam to undertand that this is not something one would want coming to a neighborhood near you!
And THEN to understand on top of all that that Muhammad, that most perfect man in Islam, beheaded people, and ordered their hands and feet cut off and their eyes blinded and branded with hot irons, and women stoned to death, and to grasp that this is at the heart of the evil that is Islam - this false prophet. After picturing all that in one's mind and after seeing all the real-world evidence of its implications in actual photographs, and seeing that hatred with its horrible graphic violence spreading all around the world including here, how could one possibly do something as naive and useless as spending 30 hours a week printing pictures of "pretty" things in the darkroom?
I'm not here because I hate. There's somewhere I'd much rather be. I'm here because Muslims hate and because the images of the real-world consequences of their hatred have now been seared into my mind, through actual photographs and through personal narrative and through historical facts that leave little to the imagination and all those really ugly images have erased all the lovely images I used to enjoy surrounding myself with.
I can honestly say that I never really knew hate until I found out about Islam. Islam's hatred reached out and touched ME (I never went looking for hate) and it's something that is simply too real to be ignored. And I know that millions of people feel the same way. I am confident that most of the people who regularly post at this site are probably very similar - i.e. they probably never really knew hate before, they were doing something else that they really enjoyed before they found out about Islam, they have the same desire to be doing something else with their time now, they feel the same reluctance to be dragged into this ugliness, and quite likely, they share the same inability to turn away and fully get on with their lives, as long as this evil exists, now that they have been literally forced by reality to become aware of it.

Me too Caroline. Until 911 we all had dreams of a better world. Now we know that this was not one isolated attack but part of a much larger pattern, where they hate us with a blind vengeance. The War On Terror is not only a military conflict, it is also an intellectual battle. As part of this war - we must demand that Islam be reformed. We can no longer tolerate in our midst an anti - democratic ideology teaching hate, murder, terror under the guise of religious freedom and political correctness. As detailed in the following article, we can no longer accept at face value Muslims who preach that Islam is a Religion of Peace and Love. Our response must be PROVE IT - remove from the Koran all teachings of terror etc and Publish a new Koran.
By leaving these violent and abhorrent teachings in the Koran, we are in effect saying that these teachings are NORMAL. We are basically acquiescing to evil. We can no longer allow Peace Loving Muslims to declare Islam as a religion of Peace and Love and tolerance etc while leaving in the Koran and Islamic texts -teachings of terror, death and destruction, subrogation of women, intolerance, hate etc. We can no longer allow these Muslims to live in a fantasy world of an ALLAH of all Goodness while the Koran contains teachings of a hateful, murderous ALLAH – the ANTI ALLAH. By demanding that Peace Loving Muslims prove that they are Truly Peace Loving – by removing these evil teachings from the Koran – will be a TRUE MOMENT OF CATHARSIS FOR ISLAM.
1. The most important part of this effort is the education and liberation of Muslim women teaching them their democratic and human rights. We should convene a conference of Muslim women reformers to spearhead the reform of Muslim women’s position in Islam. There are a number of these very brave women living in the US, Canada and Western Europe.
2. Secondly, we must oppose Wahbism and Islamic fundamentalism. These strains of Islam must be condemned and made illegal.
3, Third, no Iman of foreign descent should be allowed to head any Mosque.
4. A conference of responsible progressive Muslim organizations would be convened who would take over direction for all Mosques and all Imans in the country. No Mosque/Iman would be allowed to operate without their approval.
5. These progressive organizations plus the women’s organizations would be instructed to reform Islam:
Teachings of all violence and the subrogation of women would be removed from Islam without equivocation. The following teachings of Islam would be modernized.
Equality of women
Freedom of religion
Freedom of thought
Support of Democracy
Equality of races
Sanctity of all human life
Equality of believers and non - believers
There are many paths to Allah. There is no one truth. Islam is just one path to Allah - not the only path.
5. A New Modern Koran incorporating the above new teachings would be published to be taught in every Mosque in the country.
6. An educational course in every school throughout the country that would teach democracy and freedom, equality of women and races, the rule of law etc. All students should be given an educational grounding in the democratic and rule of law fundamentals that protects the rights of all citizens.
In this way a Western version of Islam can be created that would sweep the Muslim world.

The Civil War started as the result of states rights...it just so happened the state right at hand was slavery. I'm not trying to split hairs, but just pointing out that slavery was a state right, and that states rights went into the toilet after the war.
The Civil War was my favorite reading material for four years, but I must admit I had a tough time expanding beyond the Army of Northern Virginia. Just too many books to read, and since I knew I was an abolitionist I enjoyed the military not the political books.
I think all wars can teach us the lessons we see today, and why we've been doomed to repeat History since nobody really teaches it in school anymore.

As for "hate" on this website, it comes from the Quran and from all the Islamic authors, not from Robert, Hugh or anyone else.
Speaking of hate, the article linked above has an excellent comparison:

Battle - I thought about your post all day - that "life is beautiful". In defense of artistic pursuits in a time of peril I am reminded of those musicians who insisted on playing their music while the Titanic sank. Titanic is not only one of my favorite movies (no apologies! - and I'm sick of my oh-so-sophisticated liberal friends who can only mock the film)) but that scene is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. But I suppose at that point there was no hope and so why not play music?
If there truly WAS no hope at that point then I agree - why not play music? But if there was still some hope, then I can't help but feel that those musicians' time would have been better spent ensuring that all the life boats be filled to capacity. The music can come later - in celebration (or in effigy if it's truly too late).
Your mention of the 60's reminded me of that Byrd's song "Turn turn turn", because I recalled that line from the song about there being a season for everything - including hate, which was the topic of this thread. Then, when I googled the lyrics this morning I found out that the lyrics are based on a biblical verse - Eccliastes 3:1-8.
I never knew that. No wonder the song had such resonance. Now I am left wondering what the biblical verses mean and what they mean when they say that there is a time for hate? I'm not a Biblical scholar. Maybe they mean that hate is sometimes justified if what one hates is evil?
Maybe when it's the time to hate what is evil, and that's where one's energy should be focused while there's still time to do something about it, it's not the time to make music??
I agree with the comparisons of the civil (successionist) war and islamic jihad. It has taken more than a hundred years to implement the results of that war in a truly successful way. I believe that islam and its followers have every intention of remaining the murderous bruts they are and have every intention of creating a slavocracy out of those who will oppose them. Truly I say that aggrssive force against this enemy will be the only answer in the long run. And like the well-despised Jackson and Lincoln,President Bush will not receive cudos for at least trying to defeat this enemy for years to come. But I dare say we will look back and admire him for his determination to do the right thing.
