This delays the woman's care, but we have to wait."Senegal-based sociologist Djiby Diakhate says Islam presents a challenge to doctors who are taught to save lives under all circumstances.
Diakhate says even though doctors take a professional vow to protect life, they must also obey cultural beliefs.
The sociologist says health care workers in Muslim countries must accept what many believe is taught by the Koran, Islam's religious text, that a woman is completely dependent on her husband to make all important decisions.
He says for the patient who lost her baby, the midwives could have saved the child's life, but he says they chose to follow tradition to not risk angering God.
Diakhate says Muslims prefer to follow traditions, preferring to sacrifice the life of one child rather than face widespread death and retaliation from an angry God and ancestors.
And women convert to this because.....???

Well, yes, I can see where the confusion comes in... when a man comes in with his nine year old bride, naturally, there would be some question as to who would sign the permission slip for medical treatment, her husband, her daddy, her big brother? After all, no one wants to deal with 'an angry god and ancestors.'

You can't just walk around dispensing first aid and curing disease and saving lives frivolously when there are more important things to attend to.

I think this is right, that Allah could easily be enraged by the act of saving the life of a child, so the Muslims' fear is justified. Try to think of any other religion where the deity would be angered by such an act. I also found it interesting that, literally, this sentence described Muslims as sacrificing children to appease their god.

This is the first time I have heard muslims mentioning their ancestors. I thought the males in jannat were in an orgy with the 72 houris and 144 (is this number right ?) young boys and the females were all in dozakh.

....I remember other Islamic religious morons who chained the doors shut on a burning school thereby allowing the school girls to burn to death...the morons claimed the girls were not properly dressed according the the guidelines in the Qur'an.....

Approximate Muslim percentage in Chad: 55 %. They were not as numerous 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago [SBS World Guide, 1999, said Muslims are "44 % of total pop."]. But (my [christian] source says: "Muslims now control all the levers of power - government, trade, and the armed forces", and, note well, "mosques are being built IN NON-MUSLIM AREAS". I.E - Mosques are Bridgeheads. "Large sums of money are being invested in building two Muslim universities" (sound familiar?). My sources: Patrick Johnstone's Operation World, a factbook for Christian use, which pulls together information from many reputable secular and religious sources. The SBS World Guide is produced by a branch of Australia's national broadcaster, and isn't too bad. It draws on sources such as the CIA fact book.
CIA factbook itself breaks down 'religion' in Chad today as follows: Muslim 53.1%, Catholic 20.1%, Protestant 14.2% [34 % if taken together], animist 7.3%, other 0.5%, unknown 1.7%, atheist 3.1% (1993 census)
My own source gives a smaller Christian percentage - 27 %, and estimates a higher number - 16 % - for traditional African religion.
The christians and animists are mostly in the south; Muslims mostly in the north. "Their history is one of [Islamised] northerners enslaving [non-Muslim] southerners" (surprise, surprise).
Further note: 'independent from France in 1960. Non-Muslim southerners were politically dominant until 1978; but SINCE 1979 northern Muslim factions HAVE FOUGHT AMONG THEMSELVES (sound familiar?) FOR POWER". At present it is 'officially a secular state with religious freedom BUT THE GOVERNMENT FAVOURS ISLAM. MUSLIMS HAVE BECOME DOMINANT IN GOVERNMENT, TRADE AND THE ARMY, THOUGH BARELY A MAJORITY IN THE COUNTRY'. Notice how Muslims always zero in on the means of coercive power - whereas Christians have a long tradition of bearing witness by healing and teaching.
One tiny glimmer of hope - at present, people are apostasising from Islam to Christianity in enough numbers to form small, self-sustaining groups.
