The only opposition-ruled state in Malaysia has approved stiffer penalties to deter people from trying to convert Muslims to other faiths. Under the revised law passed by Kelantan state, anyone found guilty faces a maximum penalty of six lashes with a rattan cane, five years in prison and a fine of almost $3,000.
Kelantan is a moderate Muslim area. If it were imposing Sharia strictly, those who leave Islam would be executed, per Muhammad's instructions: "If anyone changes his religion, kill him."
Kelantan is the only Malaysian state led by the opposition Islamist party, PAS. Hassan Mohamood, who heads Kelantan's Islamic affairs committee, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the stiffer laws are useful "as a form of deterrence". The previous maximum penalty was two years in prison and a fine of RM5,000 ($1,400). Proselytising of Muslims is forbidden under federal laws, but the recent case of Line Joy, a Malay-Muslim woman who sought legal recognition of her right to pick her religion of choice, raised fears among some in Malaysia over mass conversion.

Well, Malays can be considered more moderate in some ways to other Muslims but they are getting more Islamic by the day.
The rest of the country is not more Islamic than Kelantan but I wouldn't say that they are less Islamic either. The government itself is not supposed to be Islamic but you wouldn't know it by the things they say and do. It's a complex society where religion and race is commonly used to discriminate between the citizens.
Imagine living in a country where your ethnicity is needed for everything. Instead of Malaysian you're classified by your ethnicity like Malay, Indian and Chinese. Then you have a system where quotas for Malays (read Muslims) are in place for everything including number of houses you need to sell, % of shares in your company that you need to allocate to them, the amount of discount that they must be given for the purchase of houses and the number of places in universities that must be reserved for them.
When you have an infestation of creepy crawlies and you can catch it early you will have eliminated a potentiol threat. I know I will be chastized for this but........air burst over the capital, fuse set for 1500 feet.....

As said above, religious discrimination is used as a cover for the racial discrimination that goes on every day in Malaysia. Who are the Muslims? Malays. Who are the Christians? Mostly Chinese. Who are the Hindus? Indians. Chinese and Indians control virtually the entire economy between them, leaving Malays to claim victim status and their Islamist leaders to lead the charge in the name of creating equal economic opportunities for their people.

It's just our culture. The world needs to be sensitive to that.

I read the Japs don't like Malaysia anny more. Ramadon slows prodution for one month each year.
I like the Indians and Chinese I work with in the US. Thay work hard and know thair professions well. I can see Indians and Chinese minorities taking over the economy from a lazy people.
Well America has to pass laws against sneaking into America.
And mohammedanism has laws against leaving.
Do the math.

I have known a number of Malaysian chinese who have all told upsetting stories about their second class status in Malaysia. (A large part of their reason for moving to the US).
I got the clear impression that the Chinese are the Jews of Malaysia.
Except in Malaysia, the Nazi's won.
I guess the death penalty wasn't harsh enough for them.
