In the interview with CNN at a police station in the central city of Yogyakarta, Dujana, shown handcuffed and smiling, said he thought "Americans or other civilians can become a target - that's how I see it".
Asked where the hatred of the west came from, he replied: "Many lands owned by Muslims have been taken away by our enemies. America is part of it, like in Palestine and other places.
"We demand those governments return those lands and let us put Sharia law in place."
Asked where it said in the Koran that it was acceptable to kill innocent people, he said: "I didn't read it in the Koran. It's based on the teachings of our teachers, clerics, especially what Osama bin Laden first said."...
This is misleading, as it implies that what his teachers and clerics have told him is contrary to the Qur'an. In fact, however, the point of controversy here is not over whether or not it is acceptable to kill innocent people. That is not in dispute, and the Qur'an forbids it (5:32). The controversy is actually over whether or not American, British, Israeli and other citizens of non-Muslim states are innocent at all. And on that moderate Muslim spokesmen have never spoken unequivocally.
Asked by the British interviewer whether he personally was a legitimate target, Dujana giggled."This is how it is. Islam has rules and everything is based on Sharia law," he said through a translator.
"If you ask me if you are a legitimate target, if there is clear evidence your country has attacked Islam, then we are permitted to kill you."
I thought 5:32 of the koran was an instruction to the Jews of Israel and not followers of mohammed?

This whole belief-system is a rationalization for Imperialism. It began as (and still is at its core) the engine of Arab Imperialism. This process is not unique in history and religion-ideology is the basis of all conquests and subjugation of one group of people by another. Thus the ideology of Islam permitted the destruction of "indigenous cultures" and "indigenous peoples" in Persia, North Africa, India, Kosovo, Turkey, etc. Even now Islam is the justification for mass murder in Darfur; Muslims attempt to subdue or kill everywhere they go. "Islam must dominate" is the rationalization package for what is essentially Arab Imperialism.
(BTW, all the Imperialists of history rewrite history to justify their crimes. They even go so far as to say that conquered were/are better off because of the conquest. Human criminality and rationalizations for criminal Imperialism (including Islam) are amazing in history. Our species generally has no shame.)
The difference between Manchu Imperialism, British Imperialism, Aztec Imperialism, Spaniard Imperialism (Pizzaro in Peru was a typical jihad type), etc. is that Muslims, and particularly Arab Muslims, are totally devoid of shame in their Imperialism, devoid of any capacity to take responsibility for their crimes in history, and are completely unapologetic for destroying so many "indigenous cultures" and "indigenous peoples" in the name of Islamic Imperialism which requires the subdued to bow to Mecca in the Arabian peninsula.
Islam is at its core the engine of Arab Imperialism. Islamic Imperialism will be destroyed (like Nazism) when it is resisted by its own violent methods without pity since they have no pity for non-Muslims. They feel no shame for their Imperialism in history. It is what it is.
