Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is not ruling out the possibility of transferring military equipment, including armored vehicles and bulletproof vests to the Palestinians, he said during a security consultation on Sunday."Decisions on this matter will be made according to the recommendations of Major General Keith Dayton, who has been entrusted to build the Palestinian forces. Any recommendation by Dayton will be considered by the defense establishment. Only then will we decide," Olmert said.
Olmert's position on the matter opposes the position of many of the cabinet's minister. Among the opposing minister are newly appointed Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, two Yisrael Beitenu ministers and Shas ministers.
National Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said during the discussion, "Lessons should be learned from previous weapon transfers. All the weapons we have transferred to Fatah eventually made their way to Hamas and were turned against us."
Fatah. Hamas. Blah blah blah.

Well, I guess it all hinges on one's definition of "moderate", a relative term. Compared to Hamas, Fatah is moderate. Compared to the Taleban, Iran is moderate. Compared to al-Qaeda, the KKK is moderate.
It all makes sense, especially when you're desperate for something positive, you don't really understand what's going on, and you've become jaded by trying to deal with Mideast Muslims for too long.
As the wolves surround Israel, Olmert is willing to deal with those who he believes to be "tamer" than the other wolves although all of them seek Israeli blood. This man is a coward. I cannot believe the Israelis, who have lived their lives under the howl of wolves for so many years cannot see through him. Or the soldiers who last summer were risking their lives clearing out the Hesbollah wolves hiding amongst the sheep of Lebanon have any faith in him to lead their country.

Major General Keith Dayton was in charge of the American training, and arming, of Fatah. The results of that training could be seen last week, and perhaps the 100-odd Fatah leaders who escaped by boat for Egypt, leaving behind men who outnumbered the armed recruits of Hamas by a ratio of 3-1, or 4-1, or 5-1, depending on whose figures who believe, and furthermore, had much more weaponry, which weaponry is now in the hands of Hamas. Given that obvious failure of judgment as to the abilities of Fatah (not to mention the miscomprehension of the disgust with Fatah for its corruption - which corruption is not limited to Fatah in Gaza, but is also even more evident in -- or shouldn't it be "on"-- the "West Bank").
What Major General Keith Dayton, or an American administration flailing about, trying to somehow make sense of the Muslims of the Middle East without ever coming to grips, even trying to minimally come to understand or familiarize itself, with Islam, its policymakers such as Rice eager to make up for their own confusion by appeasing here or there, paying off this or that "good" group of Muslims in the coin of Israeli security, thinks or recommends should be of no consequence to an Israeli government run by the sane and the self-assured. Olmert is certainly not self-assured, certainly is at least as determined to be wilfully oblivious to the nature of Islam as are Bush and Rice and others who, however, not being quite so immediately and obviously threatened, are not held to the same standards that any Israeli whose duty it is to protect those in whose name he claims to lead, should meet, and that Olmert fails, on every count, to meet. Israel has had many leaders not up to the task. Olmert is by far the worst of Isael's leaders, rivalled only for fatuity by the man who now holds the symbolic office of President, Shimon Peres.
Imagine how infuriating this must be, to have your destiny decided, in a democracy, by someone who is supported by less than 10% of the electorate, by almost no one, but who will not have the decency to resign, to go.

You miss the point of the analogy. Should Jews in 1934 Germany have supported the SA, just because it was a rival to Hitler, in the hopes of preventing a kristallnacht? Did not 1938 come anyway?
Whatever differences Shia and Sunni may have, whatever differences Iran and Saudi Arabia may have, whatever differences Hamas and Fatah may have, they all have one thing in common - the destruction of the Jews. Whatever aid is given to Fatah, is not an investment that will yield a profit for Israel. Whatever fighting occurs in Islam, simply produces a stronger, more virulent victor. In islam, moderates don't win, if there is such a thing. Islam is not weakened by internal fighting. For them, that is training. Just as the Nazis were not weakened by it. It made them stronger.
There you go again, "Rev." Jim. Do the truth and accuracy mean nothing to you at all? The original J-Post story is still up. The story you claim contains a "correction" of it only repeats and amplifies the Islamic Jihad claim of credit for the attacks, which was reported in the original story. It says nothing about the Fatah claim one way or the other.

This is insane! Why not just have Fatah allow an Israeli military incursion to battle Hamas? Then there'd no no chance of Fatah using the weapons against Israeli citizens.

Yes...I know that if I were a priest I'd be ordering the church bells rung dawn and dusk - and putting up a sign explaining why. If I were a rabbi I'd be blowing the shofar. I don't know what the equivalent is for other cultures but whatever it is, somebody should be doing it!
Where are the people who should be giving us all - Western non-Muslims, Eastern non-Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, secularists - the equivalent of Tolkien's Horn Call of Buckland: "Awake! Awake! Fear! Fire! Foes! Awake!"?
All I can suggest is: if you're a believer, pray hard - and work at waking up the others in your local and regional faith-community. If you're a secularist/ atheist, spread Ibn Warraq's and Hirsi Ali's insights far and wide among your acquaintance.
As for what is happening in Israel (which I find flatly incomprehensible and deeply depressing - it reminds me of the spiritual collapse of Denethor Steward of Gondor, in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings) - send a heartfelt letter of spiritual and personal encouragement to your local synagogue, Zionist organisation, and to the Israeli consulate or embassy. Meanwhile, find out where your local political rep sits on the subject. If s/he seems likely to support the plan to throw Israel to the jihad wolves, or to force Israel to continue down the current self-destructive path (same result), inform him/ her that your vote is decided by this issue, since you have no intention of repeating the sin of those who assisted at the Shoah.
