Paradox, you are absolutely correct about "mass murder magnets." Miscreants and evildoers get a good belly-laugh over "gun free zones."
Let me make a few suggestions:
1. Learn as much as you can. There is a considerable literature on arms and self defense.
And not just having to do with guns; do a google search for "Krav Maga." ( which was invented by those crafty JOOOOZ! )
2. Join the NRA. ( Ah, yes, the "evil" NRA. The reason the NRA is "evil" is that it stands in the way of total control by the socialist social engineers who also seem to have endless "tolerance" for jihadist musulmen. Without the NRA, you would have NO rights at all.)
3. Pay attention to politics, local, state, and national. If you move to New Yok City, for example, you can pretty much forget about getting a gun for self defense.
4. In your current situation, let me suggest that you try either airguns or airsoft guns. These are not only a lot of fun, but also make excellent LOW COST training tools. Do a google search or try
