Sister of UK honor killing victim speaks: Dad tried to kill her, too

Banaz Mahmod Update. "'Honour killing' sister breaks her silence," by Helen Weathers for the Daily Mail, with thanks to Morgaan Sinclair:

Britain was appalled by the horrific 'honour killing' of a girl murdered by her father for daring to kiss the man she loved.

Here, her sister, who narrowly escaped death herself and now lives in fear of her life, breaks her silence.

Every time Bekhal Mahmod leaves the safety of her home, she wears the hijab with a black veil covering her face - even though she would give anything for the freedom not to have to.

She has no family to turn to, few friends, and has to lie to new acquaintances about who she is and where she is from. She is constantly looking over her shoulder.

"My life will always be at risk," says 22-year-old Bekhal. "There are people in my community who want to see me dead, and they will not rest until I am. I will never be safe. I wear the veil so no one can recognise me."

It is a desperately lonely and isolated existence, but at least she is alive - unlike her younger sister Banaz.

Both young women brought "shame" on their strict Muslim Iraqi Kurdish family by disobeying their father Mahmod.

Bekhal, 22, ran away aged 16 rather than agree to an arranged marriage to a cousin in Iraq.

She survived an attempted killing by her brother, but her sister Banaz, 20, paid the ultimate price for leaving her own arranged marriage and then falling in love with an "unsuitable man" of her own choice.

On the orders of her 52-year-old father and uncle, Ari Mahmod, 50, she was strangled with a bootlace by Kurdish assassins, her body stuffed in a suitcase and buried six feet down in the garden of a house belonging to an associate in Birmingham.

Read it all.

Where have all the men in shining armour gone?

her 52-year-old father and uncle, Ari Mahmod, 50,

Is her father and uncle one person, or did they forget to name somebody?

--Poor girl.

After reading this story and the story below about the rape of a Muslim woman by a Muslim acquaintance, several facts jumped out at me. First, in both stories the immigrants were Muslims from Iraq. Iraqis, except for non-Muslims, should not be allowed in Western countries, no matter how badly the war ends; it's their country, Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis. Let them deal with their killings, violence and whatever future they care to create in their own country. The second thread running through both stories is the extreme and constant violence towards women by family members and other Muslim males. Muslim women, living in the West, should be subjected to class after class, on equality, legal rights and community activism on these issues. Muslim women should stop the whining about not being able to wear a veil to school or not wanting to check out ham pizzas at the local grocery stores. It should be obvious to them, above all people, that they have serious issues to deal with, for themselves and their future female children.

hugh

another statement from the queen to the muslims....she's just knighted the anti-muslim salman rushdie. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6756149.stm

this is a kick in the balls to all the marxists and muslims in the UK. this is an incredible statement from the royals in this dark period in british history. expect an islamic backlash to this astonishing knighthood. at last the royal family has shown their hand. excellent news. today, i am at last proud to call myself a briton.

Gee,fancy those 'secular & democratic' Iraqi Muslims doing such a thing...Wonder if 'penny' has dropped for George W & his 'advisors' yet-nah,the man wouldn't know what a penny was let alone collection of violence contained in Hadiths & Suras of that 'Hijacked' Religion of 'Peace.'
Talking of pennies see the Clintons are now worth
25 Million.Either you pay your presidents too much or this charming couple never made such a sum honestly. Never could understand why Hilary stood beside her serial cheatin',lyin' man-all is now revealed in 'Dollar Bill's' getting it up
in the Millionaires' Club.
This will naturally give ideas to money hungry pair,Blair & his Missus...

It is nice to see Morgaan still contributing to the site.

I wish she would drop by and say hello, so we could commiserate.

Leon,

I didn't know Salman Rushdie is married to Padma Lakshmi. Padma is the co-host of the Bravo reality television show Top Chef.

Muslim fathers smother their daughters with love?

leonthepigfarmer-

Maybe this Elizabeth is finally getting some of the instincts of the first Elizabeth?

A telling and brilliant move on her part for a change.

(And a slap on the fanny to her goofy son Charles who is a crypto-Mohammedan.)

leonthepigfarmer:

Put away the bunting and Union Jack Leon. Just read down the list and you'll come across the name Shami Chakrabarti. She of all people has been honoured with a CBE for services to the administration of justice. This traitor to Britain thrives on defending the indefensible. If only she could put that energy into representing some real victims of injustice then her legal aid fees may be justified.

Somehow, stories like this give me the impression that we should be no more supportive of non Arab Muslims - be they Kurds, Darfurians, Iranians, Berbers, et al than we'd be of Arabs. This is exactly why not only should all Muslim immigration be ended, but also why all Muslims in all infidel lands should be instantly deported. Granted, the same girls will be under the threat of honor killings. Guess what - that'll be there - in dar-ul-Islam, not here in bilad-ul-kafir.

Sure, by all means, encourage these groups to go to war with Arabs, so that there'll be more friction within the ummah. But these Muslims are no more human than Arab Muslims are, and we Infidels shouldn't make the mistake of being more supportive of them.

This story is heart-wrenching; one that's told nearly everyday in countless homes within Islam.

Well, what can you expect?

There was a SPECIAL, two-for-one deal on Al-Jazeera.

They should do as the Danes do arrest the Family and charge the lot. They put 9 of a Girls family on trial after they had her murdered outside of a Railway station in Denmark most have received stiff sentences and deportation orders. Honor killing are premeditated and good stiff sentencing like this will concentrate there minds.

What do those marxists make of this then? Even they can't condone the murder of a young woman, but how do they condemn the cultural difference (which we should all celebrate) that leads to this?

I'm sure it's the fault of Israel somehow, or maybe British imperialism.

"I'm sure it's the fault of Israel somehow, or maybe British imperialism."

Don't be ridiculous Celsius, it's all the fault of the USA of course, isn't everything?

Well the left are probably quiet because they wanted a multi-cultural society and now they've got one.

I'd actually let in Muslim women, all who wanted to come in. But I wouldn't allow any Muslim men in at all. How enraged they would be by that. Only there imaginations left, unable to slaughter, bully or kill.

MaryRose beat me to the punch on how this case and other cases tie into immigration policy. Germany has had a guest worker program bringing Turks in since the '60s. In analyzing why assimilation hasn't worked, one factor stood out. The practice of arranged marriages, bringing in especially wives from Turkey. So, you don't end up with second or third generation immigrants, you have a continuous supply of first generation, unassimilated people.

This bears on the Democrat desire to focus on "family re-unification". The rest of us call this chain-migration.

She's 22 years old. Why doesn't she just get a job in some other part of the UK, move out and not leave a forwarding address?

Sigh. Ain't no purdah like internal purdah.

WSW

The father's deep concern for his own and his family honor, and his deep indifference to his daughers and their right to life, endows Hamlet's "a little more than kin, and less than kind" with a new, islamically richer, morally appalling meaning.

Before we fall too deeply in love with "the Kurds"--because they are not as anti-American as the rest of the bunch in Iraq--we must remember that Kurds are Moslems too: some as fanatic as Arabs, Pakis, Afghanis, Afghani Talibans, etc.

Kissing the wrong guy ==> Death penalty.

Killing your daughter for misbehaving ==> Free pass.

Now that's what I call a rational, coherent moral philosophy.

But don't worry. Pornography is strictly prohibited.

PS. Is this "honor" killing nonsense actually directly OK'd in their official canon?

Or is this an application of some other principle?

Or is this just a cultural artifact that they give a pass to?

PPS. mustang65:

You're dead right.

One never hears about heroic young men battling to defend these endangered girls, or returning to avenge them.

Says a lot about their independence, individual self-respect, moral courage and their pride as men.

Reveals a lot about what the word "honor" means in that culture.

With 'family love' and devotion like this, who needs enemies. She's better off without her so-called FAMILY.

In times gone by, the aggrieved male would fight a duel with his counterpart to satisfy his honour. Pistols at dawn or some sparkling swordsmanship perhaps.

Has a certain nobility to it, especially in films.

With muslims, the males don't get hurt, they just kill the woman. I guess it's safer for them. If they're merciful, they just restrict their anger to throwing acid in her face.

You know - in the deepest, darkest recesses of the TaNaKh, known to Christians as the Old Testament, there are three highly instructive stories that tell us that the gulf between Jews and Muslims, Bible and Qur'an, Isaac and Ishmael, is bottomless.

In the first story, Dinah, Jacob's daughter, is raped by a plausible young man (who does, subsequently, offer marriage). Her brothers are offended. But do they kill Dinah? Nope. They target the rapist and his male relatives. "Should he treat our sister as a prostitute?" Phyllis Chesler, Jewish feminist, points out that at no point in the story do the brothers turn on their sister. The text hints that she was a bit foolish - but she isn't punished by death, as she would be, if it was happening in today's 'Palestine', in Gaza or Ramallah. And this Hebrew story is a couple thousand years old...

Second story: Judah's daughter in law Tamar, who has been denied her rights (long story) seduces Judah by pretending to be a prostitute, and gets pregnant. They're getting ready to burn her for being a Bad Girl, when - ta dah! - she produces the personal items he'd given her in lieu of cash payment. Judah, like some Woody Allen protagonist, folds instantly - "she is more righteous than I"; nothing more is said about burning or Bad Girls, Tamar stays in the family, has the baby (well, babies, twin boys), the boys are fully recognised as Judah's sons. (One of them turns up in Jesus' genealogy).

Third story: another Tamar, King David's daughter. Her half brother Amnon rapes her. Her full brother Absalom notices she's looking sad, gets the story out of her. BELIEVES HER. SYMPATHISES WITH HER. Offs the rapist...I told you, these stories come from the deepest, darkest, most 'primitive' parts of the Old Testament. But they are STILL light years ahead of the contemporary Muslim/ Arab mindset. If this story were happening in a Saudi Arabian family palace - today - Absalom and Amnon would be teaming up to slit Tamar's throat and bury her in the back courtyard.

A culture of truth and falsehood vs. a culture of 'honour' and 'shame'. No comparison. No possible meeting point. I know which I prefer.
