The State Department, in an unprecedented move highlighting its desperate need for Arabic speakers, is allowing U.S. diplomats to curtail their current assignments anywhere in the world and begin Arabic language training in September.Foreign Service officers who are interested in learning Arabic or improving existing skills have until the end of July to apply for more than 100 positions in Arabic-speaking countries that will open in the next two years.
Asked why the program has been initiated only now -- nearly six years after the September 11, 2001, attacks and more than four years into the Iraq war -- department officials cited a lack of resources.
The lack of resources may be over. The lack of realism persists.
Once they do learn Arabic, maybe they can read the Quran in original, and see what they conclude. After all, aren't we often told that we have to know Arabic to understand the Quran.
Of course, we know that once that's done, taqiyya artists like JehanZeb will be telling us that we have to be Muslims to understand the Quran.
I have a strong background in Hebrew and Aramaic. I have been studying Arabic with dedication for many many years and I imagine I'll be stuyding it for years to come.
Our foreign-policy officers will be lucky after three years of study if they can read a menu at an Arabic restaurant, or even order a demi-tasse of cardamon-scented black coffee in a dialect of the spoken language their waiter might understand.
Finger pointing while saying "ana bidi" is probably as far as most will get.
They'd be better off studying Islam.

It's interesting that you have to read Arabic to really understand the Qur'an. Since 80% of Muslims worldwide do NOT read Arabic, there must be a lot of misunderstanding going on.

The Koran is an incomprehensible chant not meant to be read or understood. Knowing Arabic will not help you. It is replete with lies, errors, irregularities and contradictions somewhat representative of Arabic (i.e. "bandit" or thief) culture. It is probably a good moral code for Arabians. When the Arabians become missionizing with their Koran, we all need to protect ourselves.

Times has an op-ed today by an Arabic speaker who was drummed out of service for being gay. We should leave getting lathered up about that stuff to the Islams.
What saddens me is the Bush administrations inability to understand that a direct hot war with a Muslim country will cause the Koranic "we love death more than you love life" aspects of their narrative. An extended cold war combined with a strangling of Muslim countries resources so they implode is what is needed.
The idea that 600,000,000 has been spent on a hot war and there are not enough Arabic speakers to serve diplomacy, spying, and political/economic espionage is absurd. We need to destroy confidence in the Islamic narrative by isolating it and demonstrating that their god is no god. This will only happen through protracted cultural frustration and an imploding of the Middle East through muslim on muslim violence. A long cold war is needed and if massive resources were given to this instead of Iraq, we'd be well ahead in strangling off violent Muslim expansionism.
We also need to smarten up and expel all Muslim students from hostile Muslim countries and find a way to destroy the market for oil. Imagine what $600 billion in R&D could do!!!

This wreaks of 'wahhabi lobby' and is more likely a surreptitious maneuver by it -with pro-islamist and willing insider cohorts - to force feed their own into State. State Department is not full of dumbies (well, maybe not) and has many who likely know very well that very very few - to none are capable of achieving "diplomatic-level" language fluency -let alone rudimentary fluency - in arabic - in 2 years (when those key 100 positions and more open up). Also more likely: wahhabist ruler to Mr/Madame Secretary- "...we really need persons with deeper knowledge of Arabic ways (i.e. muslim) -requiring language fluency ... we would like you to make this happen...". Madame/Mr Secretary to wahhabist: "Yes your highness. We will make it happen - whatever it takes ... .".
Further -State is likely making this public pronouncment to line up the usual "useful idiot" support for a fix - any fix.
So look for what is now the norm in DC to happen regarding this - "the exceptions or rewritten rules" which will allow pro-wahhabist Arabic speakers (i.e. muslims and including recent immigrants or soon to be -i.e. all those arab pro-wahhabi students our 'Great Leader' allowed in to study at 'infidel universities') into key US State Dept positions. Anyone can figure out what that will mean.
It is a fact that the State Department and other federal agencies have been turning away native Arabic-speaking Jews for many years simply because "Muslims do not like working with Jews." There are tens of thousands of Syrian Jews in Brooklyn who could prove to be a wonderful resource for our intelligence community.
The intricacies of Arabic are many and subtle. The Arabic language course in Monterey takes eighteen months, triple the time of any other language.

Brother TINBH, I think you hit the nail squarely on the head. There are twenty-seven (27) forms a word can take in the plural in Arabic. Nobody, not even an Amharic,Hebrew or Aramaic linguist could attain "diplomatic-level language fluency" in Arabic in two years. Five years would be a stretch. Three years for alphabet, orthography, pronunciation, reading and the grammar of the Written Language. Two years at least for the spoken language.
But that's a stretch.

I'm a christian non arab, but can speak arabic fluently and with perfect pronuncition! And I offered my help and at least the tow agents I talked with said: "no thanks!"

Lets see now, we have a state department that can't find people with the ability to understand the language of the people whom wish to kill Americans. But force all Americans to be bilingual in businesses,hospitals,schools, etc. For the people who come to America to leach off our way of life, and not assimulate to America. Go figgure!
These same people turned away Jews who knew Arabic in our FBI/CIA because the muslims didn't want them around. This was after 9/11. They would rather turn away a Jew and let piles of documents pile up and the ones that are translated are done so by muslims themselves. And we all know about their kitman, taqiyya, or even 'turnspeak'. That was like letting in the rats while the black plague is in full gear!
There is a wealth of people who do indeed know Arabic and they don't have to say they are Jewish - all they have to do is hire them.
And the crud that they tell us that one has to know Arabic to know the koran is crud. It is violent and in any language it is violent. It is just one more excuse to throw people who don't crack open the book and read it for themselves. Read about their prophet - Mohammed - and that will tell you right there that their religion is nothing but a political movement that uses religion as a front and god as a weapon.
Okay "State". Legally blind here, but nothing else to do with my time, so contact me. I'll be willing to help Karen Hughes get a grip and Condi too. An American mind is a terrible thing to waste. Mine functions just fine. Arabic could be my new tongue. Call me "State" I'm willing to help you out. And God knows you need it bad.

I cannot understand why the Australian government, or the US government, the Canadian government and other western and non-Muslim societies are not welcoming by the thousands the harassed and wretched Christians (or Mandaeans or Zoroastrians, Buddhists Hindus and animists) who desperately desire to flee the Empire of Islam.
Just as Europe took in the refugees from Byzantium centuries ago...just as Israel took in the Oriental Jews...just as we took in the non-and-anti-Communist Chinese, Russians, Vietnamese. Sure, there were a few bad apples in the bunch. But 99% of them were very clearheaded about the hellholes they'd come from, and contributed hugely to their new homes. South Vietnamese who fought the communists, and fled to Australia as illegal 'boat people' after 1975, now march side by side with Australian veterans on Anzac Day - since they, too, fought for freedom. Russian emigres, from 1917 onward, showed Western Christians the glories of orthodox art, liturgy and music; and many taught people Russian, and Russian history, from a non-communist/ anti-communist POV.
We don't need even one more Muslim migrant. Instead we need to open 'the gates of hope', as Bat Ye'or might say, to those hundreds of thousands of non-Muslim refugees from jihad and sharia who are surely just as motivated as the anti-communist Russian and Vietnamese and Chinese refugees of the Cold War. We need their language skills - their ability to hear and speak fluent Arabic, Farsi, Pashtun, Urdu, Indonesian, Malaysian, Somali whatever. If they're Christians they're probably literate...if not they can be brought up to scratch ASAP, and fast-tracked into our universities and military colleges and civil service. We need to call them before our synods, our parliaments, our universities and military colleges, to tell us what we are fighting for, and what we are up against - the living hell of Jihad, sharia., dhimmitude. We need them in our armies, our diplomatic corps, our intelligence service; we need them as interpreters and translators so that we are NOT dependent, anymore, on Muslim intermediaries who basically cannot be trusted. We need Oriental Jews, Lebanese Christians, Egyptian Copts running re-vamped Oriental Studies and Arabic Studies departments.
This week, as Australia goes into pre-election mode I will be writing, making exactly these points, to my PM, the Leader of the Opposition, the Immigration Minister, Defence Minister, Education Minister, and Foreign Affairs Minister, and their Shadows, as well as my federal mp. I will be saying - for the love of God, open Australia's doors for these persecuted Iraqi Assyrian Christians, before they are all murdered. And then - for their knowledge of Arabic - hire them!
With due caution exercised it should be possible to weed out any Muslim 'moles' who might pose as non-Muslims to get in the door...

I am currently studying Islam and Middle East affairs independently and taking Arabic lessons. I am willing to give them my career if they will pay for my training.
