“We are awaiting an official response from Iran on the ... Shariatmadari issue,” a Bahraini Foreign Ministry official who declined to be named told Reuters on Thursday. Sectarian tensions have flared in Bahrain in the past, as Shiites complain of discrimination in jobs and services. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to whom Shariatmadari is considered close, is one of a number of religious leaders to whom Shiite Muslims look for guidance, although only a minority of Bahraini Shiites follow Khamenei.
Bahrain’s shura council, or upper chamber of parliament, condemned Shariatmadari’s comments. “The shura council in Bahrain has strongly deplored the irresponsible statements released by the advisor to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and managing editor of Iranian daily Kayhan, Hossein Shariatmadari,” it said in a statement.
The US Navy’s Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain. I hope the Iranians don’t take the beer hall.

The Sunni ruler of Bahrain (he was known to the British simply as "The Ruler" but recent examples have been giving themselves promotions hand over fist, and possibly he is, for all I know, the King of Bahrain) rules over a population that is 70-75% Shi'a. As in that cliched phrase, "restive Shi'a." He has tried to invite in Sunnis from Iraq, even offering them full citizenship, so as to dilute the power of the Shi'a -- supposedly as many as 50,000. Let's see if that does the trick, or merely inflames those "restive Shi'a" further.
This looks a lot like Gulf War I redux, only with Iran and Bahrain instead of Iraq and Kuwait: crazy regime, small, oil-rich neighbor ripe for the taking, opportunistic calls for Jihad, etc.
The best way to pacify that region is to sieze the oil fields. No money, no Jihad.

Why?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's the sunni pakistani and arabs that are behind all the terrorist attacks against Britain. Whenever shia persians go to war against the sunnis I wish them good luck.

So let them do something like a population exchange - Syria gets more Shia, and Bahrein gets more Sunnis, and then Iran has no claims. Agreed again. I remember full well the liberation of Kuwait, and the scenes of Kuwaitis thanking the coalition troops. An American hgeneral was moved to tears. I thought at the time, that it wont be long before the Kuwaitis hate the Americans. And so it has been.

And by the Russians. I seriously doubt that if Czechoslovakia and Poland were under US control after World War II the 10+ million Germans in Poland and Czechoslovakia would have been expelled to Germany.
I wouldn't worry too much about this a foreign threat distracts the people from thinking about the problems at home. It is normal for failing regimes to do this. Anyway the Saudis would allow this, where could they go if they couldn't cross the causeway for a bit of cheap whoring and drinking.
