AL-QAEDA has urged Pakistanis to revolt against President Pervez Musharraf following the storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad, in an audiotape posted on the Internet.
"I call upon the Ulama (Muslim clergy) in Pakistan.... Musharraf and his hunting dogs have tarnished your honour in service of the crusades and the Jews," the group's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, said in the recording, after stating that he was speaking on the "occasion of the criminal aggression" on the mosque.
The recording was hosted on a website known to publish Al-Qaeda statements.
"If you do not revolt, Musharraf will annihilate you. Musharraf will not stop until he uproots Islam from Pakistan," Zawahiri said.
"Muslims in Pakistan: no salvation for you except through Jihad (holy fight). Rigged elections and politics will not help you.... You should now support the mujahedin (holy warriors) in Afghanistan," he said.
"Are there no honourable men in Pakistan?" he added.
Pakistani troops Wednesday cleared the last militants from the Red Mosque in Islamabad after two days of intense fighting that left at least 82 people dead, including 73 militants, and turned the capital into a battleground.
Commandos killed the final hardcore of rebels who fought to the death in tunnels and bunkers beneath the living quarters of their chief, pro-Taliban cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi, who was shot dead late Tuesday.

Ghazi, 43, the public face of the mosque and its deputy leader, said before he was killed in the fighting that he and his followers would rather die than surrender and hoped his death would spark an Islamic revolution in Pakistan.
His brother, head cleric Abdul Aziz, was caught trying to flee the mosque in a burqa a week ago.

Why is al-Zawahiri rambling about "no honorable men" when the leader of the rebellion tried to bug out in a burka?

Coming closer to the reality
It is worth mentioning time and again that in early eighties and through out the nineties; Jihad was the buzz world in Muslim World and especially in Pakistan. The military government of Pakistan, under General Zia ul Haque on the behest of United States and with a help of ISI formulated a programme to under take and fight a proxy war for United States of America to dislodge the Soviet Union from Afghanistan. American had agreed to look after the interests of Pakistan and agreed to pay handsomely for this job. Very tactfully people of Pakistan were louvered in, and asked to join the forces in the name of their religion- Islam. Different seminaries were mobilised to induct Mujahideen force. Other Islamist from Arab lands also joined hands.
It is another story how Pakistan conducted the war and how Mujahideen fought. But certainly Russian were given a sever beating. The huge empire of Soviet Union, (a super power) came down crumbling and disintegrated.
Where as this action conducted by Pakistan made it possible for United States to become a sole world's super power. In turn USA rewarded Pakistan to the brim. Down the lines; in Pakistan the Mujahideen induction camps, the seminaries (madrasas) and all the forward training camps were well stashed with mounds of dollars showered by Uncle Sam. This trickling down of dollars in abundance was seen all over; as some heaven has opened asunder. A magical rainbow was visible on the horizons. It was time of rejoicing in the Mujahideen camps.
This USA and Pak- Afghani romance did not lost very long. All done and paid; US job was finished and US decided to pull the plugs. USA decided to abandon Mujahideen Forces abruptly, which these warriors had failed to realise it earlier that it will happen so.
All the disintegrated Russian Lands happen to be Muslim countries and after the collapse of Soviet Union; it was required that an impetus be maintained by Mujahideen to consolidate the achievements and fan out in Central Asia to take charge of freed countries and form a larger Islamic block. But as all the proxy and mercenaries have to go home one day; so Mujahideen were to do so. Their payouts and stipend were also stopped. Having meagre resources at hand and lack of will (as they have just fought a vicious battle and were bruised); they were unable to push forward their Pan Islamism plans beyond the Afghan border to the west.
The Mujahideen lower ranks were finding themselves much frustrated. They had their yearning to stay embraced in the radiant bliss of their success for a longer length of time and be known as honoured one…'The Mujahideen - the conquerors'.
This frustration of Mujahideen is a turning point in the history of Central as well as South East Asia. These frustrated forces in Afghanistan employed on the hefty American pay outs and bribes; now rather than making a positive move and to act with the wisdom to pursue their cause of Pan Islamism, they choose the ugly route of confrontation:
1. Firstly to take arm against America who had now, abandoned them and in the past used them like a 'tissue papers'.
2. Secondly they started turning against their benefactor intermediaries i.e.; Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. As they had come to know that how in the name of Jihad; their lives were bartered for the money by their puppeteers?
Since then; this area is plunged into a state of terror and frenzy. Peace has flown to Pleiades (Heaven) but the major prediators i.e. USA and her coalesce are all out to grab and feast like scavengers in these lands by creating anarchy and mayhem for their ill aimed businesses.
After Iraq, Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) debacle in Pakistan is another example of Mujahideen frustration. This mosque was one of the seminaries made responsible to induct and supply the fodder (Mujahideen) for the Afghan war; where Jihad training business had never ceased and lately these seminaries turned to radicalism. It had grown so large now that leader of this mosque very defiantly challenged the rite of government, right in the capital city of Islamabad and dared to declare their own sharia (laws) by force in the area.
We must think that the belief or religion has got nothing to do with business of rapacious greed. Both the parties and their fellow beneficiaries want to cease the power (by hook or crook) in and around the Middle East to avail the command and control of vital resources of Middle East and beyond. Both sides are using the religion as a ---tool and exploiting for their ugly gains only. If US and allies are overwhelmingly strong in the battle fields…in Iraq; the other side forces are likely to choose the vulnerable targets in the rear echelons of Allies…namely in the western home land grounds.
Matter of fact is that both the sides are 'Terrorists'. And we all know that terrorist don't take time off for vacation.

That the collapse of the Soviet Union had anything to do with Afghanistan is islamist propaganda and a complete misunderstanding of history. During world war II the Soviets lost approximately 15 million soldiers in 4 years, the Germans captured half of the European part of the Soviet union and the Soviet Union didn't collapse. In Afghanistan the Soviets only lost 15.000 soldiers in ten years and didn't lose an inch of Soviet territory and the Soviet Union collapsed because of that???
I'm certain that in the same time period a lot more Russians died in traffic accidents or because of alcoholism than in the war in Afghanistan.
The Soviet Union collapsed because of its failed economy: basically they were broke. The communist system can only work if it adopts market economy (China) or brutal opression of the people (North Korea) otherwise it collapses.
