It had already been fired. And no, I am not saying this is jihad-related. But this is, of course, the sort of thing jihadists would love to get hold of, and use. Have more been stolen? Are they easy to get hold of? Has security been increased wherever they are stored?
By Scott Weinberger for CBS (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
(CBS) JERSEY CITY A Jersey City woman made a shocking discovery on her lawn this morning when she noticed a military rocket launcher lying in the grass.Niranjana Besai was leaving her house, located at 88 Nelson Street, to go to work just after 8 this morning when she spotted the launcher on her front lawn. "I read it and it [said] 'missile,'" Besai told CBS 2 HD. "There was little 'missile' [writing] on it."
She immediately called police.
Sources tell CBS 2 HD that the device is an AT-4 missile launcher that is used to fire against tanks and buildings. The device was first approved by the U.S. Army in 1985 and questions are being raised as to whether the device was stolen from a branch of the military.
Its very powerful warheads can penetrate through well over a foot of armor, however each launcher can only be used once. The device found on Besai's lawn was said to have been used previously and deemed inoperable....
Officials initially expressed concern after discovering that Besai's house is located along a flight path for Newark Liberty International Airport....
Besai's neighbor, Joe Quinn, tells CBS 2 HD he was outside of his home when he noticed Besai pointing at the device from her front porch. When he walked over to see what the fuss was about, he was just as shocked to see weapon, said to be about three or four feet long and weighing about 15 pounds....
Quinn says he originally thought the launcher was just a pipe, but after noticing the picture of the soldier -- which he described as a soldier kneeling, holding the launcher -- he realized it looked similar to a missile launcher he'd seen on television. "I got scared myself," he says. "It looked like a bazooka, and right away you think what does somebody want with something like that?"
What indeed?
Used LAW rocket tubes are not considered weapons ... the rocket itself is a Destructive Device, and regulated under the NFA.
Here is a used tube on ebay:

If a live rocket was in it, I might get scared.
If the FBI finds the owner(s), I guess the jihadists can gleefully sue the poor woman who reported it?
Naturally, the FBI wouldn't think of arresting any co-conspirators for failing to report.
I really don't see what the big deal is, I mean, really, in every picture I've ever seen of a radical Islamist...they're carrying some kinda of rocket/RPG/72Virgins Assurance Device.
No doubt they were using it like a walking cane, just like all those pics I've seen.
Yeah, that's it!

"you think what does somebody want with something like that?"
.....in Atlanta Georgia some time back, two M-72 LAW rocket launchers were found alongside the railroad tracks near the airport....
.....Al-Qaeda has been promising "something special" will happen in the US soon....
...This is a weapon certainly capable of bringing down a jet airliner as it takes off or is landing....
I think someone wants bad things to happen to Americans...
Brothers and Sisters,
this is a setup!
It is the work of Jooooooooooooos!
Just a reminder, 11 Years and 3 days since flight 800 dropped out of the sky. Many witnesses claim they saw a rocket penetrate through it...
Maybe someone in NJ was in training...

This clearly looks like a terror tactic to frighten even if the launcher is harmless. Some "religion of peace" types trying to worry us about how easy it might be to fire on a plane.
But don't worry, our politicians tell us most Muslims are moderate.
We had deactivated Stinger launchers lying around our workshop for weeks at a time and nobody bothered picking them up. I think a few got thrown in the bin and the rest are probably still sat in the back of an overage Humvee gathering dust. Nobody seemed to care they were there.
In truth it wouldn’t have been hard to take all of them off base, buts that only because they were duds. I would never have got near a live one.
Reuters is now calling it a, "defunct 'missile launcher'."

According to the article, the object was a 20-year-old "military training device" that was "no longer operable and not considered to be a hazard to public safety."
Yup, the perfect training device for a terrorist to practice with before using the working one on an aircraft flying overhead...

Surely the point is that the launcher can only be used once. This is a classic example of our throw away society. When I was a lad, you could take your old rocket launchers back to the shop and the kindly gentleman behind the counter would give you 6d. They were returned to the makers and rinsed out and reused. Those were the days.
The title of the article is misleading. The author used the verb "seize", hwich implies the feds acquired it through a search warrant. The feds did not seize the alucher, they picked it up from the woman's lawn like a FedEx guy would pick up your package. He wouldn't seize your package, would he?

....I would say some clever Pakistani machinist type terrorists could take a "training device" and with a few modifications, make it workable...and we know they have access to many surplus and supplied explosives and assorted military equipement....
afterall, it only needs to work once...
Doctor Bulldog,
I have worked with lots of deactivated Stingers lying around, I’ve got a picture of me holding one on my shoulder taken by one of my colleagues. Hell they even let us lot service Bushmaster Cannons, but I am no better at shooting down a plane or firing a cannon than I would be if I’d never seen either weapon. It’s one thing having it in front of you inoperable. It’s another to use it in anger.
The Other Mert,
True, but practice makes perfect. An idea that the U.S. Military seems to adhere to by using inert rocket launchers to train inexperienced recruits.

When I was in the Cadets we used to learn how to strip Lee Enfield 303 rifles. I could take one apart blindfolded when I fourteen. So yes I agree, having one to play with does help if you need to know how to clean it. But the day I got one to fire for real it nearly ripped my arm off and I missed the barn door.
We got to play with a proper Javelin simulator once, complete with digital helicopter and cables to simulate recoil, I still missed and that was as real as the British Army could get without shooting down a real helicopter.
Trust me there is very little to nothing to be learnt from an inert missile launcher. I may as well point a broom skyward and shout bang.
If they left it there to test the local’s reactions is a different matter. Or maybe some idiot stole it for a toy, got scared and threw it into a garden.
That was my first thought as well.
One marvels at the swiftness of the "nothing to see here folks, move along" statements issued by authorities.
Then again, perhaps one of the local jihadi's was under the impression that it was "bulk trash pickup day".
Or, the individual(s) who disposed of this 'object' were testing the democrats "If you see something, shut up or be sued" Death Wish Caucus.

If it was true, wouldnt some jihadist group have claimed responsibility?
"Well I found this missile launcher and thought hey I'll get sued if I report it, and it is kind of useful, so I’ll keep it in the garage for a rainy day”.

Given the John Doe situation, you ain't seen nothing yet.
These things run for $125 USD on ebay -- so if "someone" just decided to dump this onto someones yard, they threw away something they could possibly get $100 dollars for -- if there is a market for such things.
Sounds to me like this was placed somewhere so that it could be "found." I doubt that this lady can be sued because she only reported a "lost item" and not "suspicious activity."
In anycase, we'll have to keep an eye on those radical Catholic groups who have a reputation for hijackings, suicide murders, and beheadings at the behest of the Blessed Virgin; best keep on the alert for those damned zionists while were at it as well as those crazies in the malitia groups -- no telling what they will be up to next.
Stop the islamification of Europe!
A rally to be held on 9/11/2007. See great video here:

The Other Mert,
"...I may as well point a broom skyward and shout bang."
Funny you should mention that. When I was three years old, my father made a broomstick gun for me to practice with. He even had made the sights out of a piece of tin with a "V" cut in it, and a small nail at the end. When my father reckoned that I had learned to hold it properly and correctly sight up objects in the distance, he let me use his .22. At 3 years old and on my first shot, I nailed a rabbit.
So, there is something to be said about practice. After all, how else would you know which end of a rocket launcher to point towards the target?
But, you could be right. It could be just a harmless toy that got chucked in the yard. Who knows? Except the perpetrator...
Cheers,

P.S. - Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck *grin*
I keep pondering this. What would you do if you woke up one morning and found an anti-aircraft gun on your lawn, complete with sandbags and crew, and Jane Fonda. That would be difficult to explain away.
AT-4 is meant mainly for the SPIGOT anti-tank weapon...but it's also versatile/compatible enough to be rigged with other ordinance with which can be launched by said unit, including anti-air ordinance.
It CAN be refurb'd to fire something else...it was only "inoperable" since it was expended, so that rhetoric was just more of the same "no reason to suspect terrorism" BS.
10 to 1 it was smuggled off a base INCONUS by a durkanese who happens to work at, or for, the base, too.
Ft Dix, anyone?
Heck, I'm always doing stuff like that, but not with weapons, just with skunks I trap, or dead cats I find in my basement.

That's absolutely disgusting! I don't know any Jews that do things like that. You must be like one of those dudes in Deliverance.
If we didn't have Muslims here, we wouldn't be so worried about little things like discarded missile launchers, now would we? Then we'd just have to trap skunks.
C'mon you guys, let's get real. This was an in your face, "What are you gonna do about it" type message. In my almost 50 years on planet earth I've never seen nor even heard of anyone leaving a rocket launcher on someone's front lawn. And so close to an Airport, the launching pad for this war that we find ourselves in? I wouldn't be surprised if Doug Hooper had placed it there himself.
Does anyone have any information on the date, 7/20 in Muslim history? There may be a clue there.
Nope...but it would be one less player in the unholy alliance.
Out here in CA, we find this stuff more often than admitted to...
reconquista mexican separatists who vow to "kill gringos"...
neo-nazi/aryan brotherhood separatists who vow to kill to secure some bizarre aryan homeland setup...
new black panthers trying to reconstitute a predecessor movement for the same reasons...
...and all are on the same side.
It's become a yawner out here...but they only stay within their "secured areas" (their own turf) where they know they won't get their asses shot off by us normal folks.
IsabellatheCrusader
(By the way, don't you mean Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR?).
Yes, 7/20,reaching back in my memory, that was when Muhammed consummated his marriage to Aisha on her ninth birthday. There must be some psychological connection with missiles - an obvious phallic symbol - and aggression, in that Muslims are secretly ashamed of Muhammed and want to take it out on the Infidels.
Why not do what I do - trap a skunk in a have-a-heart trap and let it go in a someone's yard. Then cackle your head off.
Hmmmm, Jewdog,
A spent rocket launcher as a phallic symbol, and on the anniversary of Mo's and Aisha's wedding night. How appropriate. And there doesn't seem to be any corresponding response to wherever that rocket went. Probably indicative of what Aisha got out of it.
Yes, I did mean Ibrahim Hooper. I just shortened it. Maybe we should call him Doogie Hooper.
Possibly, Isabelle...ya may have a point since dates in history mean a lot more to them...

Well, I believe these bastards when they say they want to take over my country and make my life miserable. And that's not paranoia; I'm just being vigilant. And since these folks do what they say they are going to do, or at least give it a try (those docs in the UK are so dumb) it's worth having a listen.
Wouldn't it be refreshing if our fearless leaders would listen to what is being said at the mosques and madrassas around the good old USA and got their heads out of their butts and admitted that what they are hearing isn't good for our people or our country and started acting accordingly?
Bonniea gave me an idea for a movie:
Aisha and Muhammed star in a Mideast version of Deliverance. Burt Reynolds goes on a camping trip to Arabia with his friends. A couple of them get separated and seek shelter in a remote desert tent. There, they meet a man and his nine year old "daughter", who give them drugged wine. They awaken later to find themselves tied up and being molested by their depraved hosts, who mutter strange religious incantations.
Meanwhile, back at the oasis, Burt sets out to rescue his friends, kills the kidnappers and the War on Terror never happens.
Jewdog,
I mean no disrespect, but, are you smokin' crack tonight?
This is such an overblown story it makes my head spin.
The AT-4 is a SINGLE-USE munition. It is essentially scrap once fired. It has marginal value as a training aid. The live item is like a Polaroid: point and shoot, so simple even the densest recruit can handle it.
The thing was probably walked off a local base by someone looking for a cool souvenir.
Don't panic, people!
jcom972 hit it right on the head: They were celebrating the July 20, 1969, landing of Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon! What else would you do with a rocket launcher?
What a great day that was 38 years ago!! Years of hard work paid off with two Americans actually walking the surface of the moon. Before they left Eagle and got to work, both men took time out for communion. No matter how historic the day, they realized the importance of honoring the God who created everything.
You can buy used rocket launchers all day at Army Surplus stores. What is wrong with that? Nothing.
The AT-4 is just over one (1) meter in length (40in). The "Stinger" is about five (5) feet long. The story reports a device of six feet in length. Which is it?
The expended AT-4 tube/trigger can be re-used to spark a rocket motor. If it was a "trainer" it would have a blue band around it (Inert). A previously "live" launcher/cannister will have a yellow band around it. Who knows where it came from (is that important?). A CAIR stunt to show how "involved" the day-to-day "peaceful" neighborhood family is? Bensai?
(The expended tubes make a great military motif lamp stand, or a flourescent light hanger.)
P.S. The TWA Flt800 explosion was due to fuel leaking, and vapors igniting after an O2 cannister overheated. The resulting "streak" seen by witnesses was due to the fuel and vapors, which exited the plane before the cannister overheated, and ignited from the inferior aspect towards the plane. A common misunderstanding of flammable liquids and vapors. All of the 200+ eyewitnesses are wrong. (What? You don't believe this explanation? Was Richard Clark wrong?? I mean, he was the "expert" on Bill's staff, and this account "is" what happened people. "They" are the "experts" after all is said and done, right??) Surely, the CBS and JTTF explanation is accurate and believeable... You say CAIR aren't stuntmen?? Say it ain't so Joe...
