CALCUTTA — Indian Muslim leaders are uniting with female students in opposition to a "fatwa" or Islamic edict demanding that Muslim girls stay away from academic institutions where boys are studying.The order, issued by the influential theological school of Darul Uloom Deoband in northern India last week, said coeducation should be banned in schools, colleges, universities and even religious schools because it creates the potential for many evils.
But in an unprecedented display of solidarity, many Muslim leaders have joined with female students across India to oppose the edict, charging that it is detrimental to the real development of Muslim society.
"Right now, all across the country, Muslims are sending their children to study in schools and universities," said Muslim community leader Akhtar Alvi, professor at Jamia Milia Islamia University in New Delhi.
"In a never-seen-before phenomenon, Muslim girls are coming forward for higher studies in droves, and this fatwa stands against them. The fatwa, as it appears, is directed to keep the Muslims as a backward community."

What a disaster it was for India to not send all the peaceful ones to Pakistan back in 1947. This may lead to the ultimate downfall of India considering the way the peaceful ones operate. I have to agree with the muslim leaders here and let the womens study just like the mensfolk…upto a point.
This point should not hold the education of muslimas back (I mean consider me as a prime example) but is so important that it simply cannot be ignored.
The point is this: If during her education process the muslima gets married, (or Allah SWT forbid is expecting out of wedlock) and then is expecting a child then she has to stop (or continue her education at home) for a period of two years.
Muslims must let their children develop their own immune system naturally. Leading "Islamically healthy lives," is enough to ward off most illnesses and diseases.
"You see, Allah SWT created us perfect and with a very strong defence system. If you breast-feed your child for two years — as the Koran says — and you eat Koranic food like olives and black seed, and you do ablution each time you pray, then you will have a strong defence system."
So womens cannot attend college easily with child …and feeding rooms are far and few in between in education institutions.
The danger is that the muslima may lose interest in education or perhaps fall pregnant again and be “held back” for another 2 years….however the muslima may forgo all for her childrens as she loves them so much.

.....they do not let childbearing hinder or delay the education process...and they are able to complete their studies in a timely manner...they are not to be delayed by 7th century rituals or 7th century beliefs that were designed to make such studies almost impossible to deal with.....

But it's clear from the article that "many" Indian moslem leaders, notably those at the school of Darul Uloom Deoband, approve of this fatwad. Which side of the question has more "many" leaders supporting it?
Slightly OT, but this whole business of fatwads fascinates me. Who gets to issue them? Is there some islamic authority that certifies or ordains people for this, like a Christian minister is able to perform marriages? Can those who are pro-coeducation go to another authority and get a counter-fatwad in favor of coeducation? And, most importantly, is there a fee involved?
You see, I'm thinking of setting myself up as an imam or mufti or whatever, and selling cut-rate fatwads. If things go well, I foresee ordaining sub-imams, and franchising the business, or perhaps going into cooperation with a major retailer, like Wal-Mart. After all, they already have optical departments, with their own opticians, and pharmacies with their own druggists, so why not their own muftis? Or maybe I could just sell them on-line.

Knowing that in patriarchial Indian society, girl child is often not granted the same previliges as the boy child. Knowing that muslim girl child in India suffers the most, I have chosen to sponsor poor muslim girl children from www.children.org. All the while, I was unaware that muslims deliberately keep their girl child illiterate. Should I withdraw my sposorship for muslim girl children, since it is their very community that was defeatring my purpose? And that there are many non-muslim children who need and deserve help? I suppose that for a Mahometan cultist, the idea of NOT sending girls to school makes perfect sense from a cost-benefit analysis point of view. Prioritize in favor of non-Muslim disadvantaged kids first - be they Adivasis, SC/ST/OBC, other Hindus, Christians, Jains, anybody. There are studies done that prove seperate man and women classes or school are better to learning than the British Co-ed class plan which was make to destory the Muslim Education system in India and around the Empire. Girls in CoEd school dumb rhemseld down in math and science so they can attract men. In girls only school the girls math and science scorce are higher than at Co-ed school. Boy and girls can be together in pre-k to 6th grades with no problim. In our Islamist school they do seperate the boys and girls into seperate group so they can learm better and they do very well in Texas
State test scorces. I donot believe ib all the testing the State do now many school just treach enought to the kids to pass the test but not to treach more than testes demand. In NY State it you pass the regeant test at the end of the year you pass for the year even if you where failing for the whole year like I was in Bio Science with 30 and 40 grades but I pass the regeant test with than 80 and it was than test to see what you learn in the school year and it was than rought but very

I've had NOTHING BUT COED classes, and I've been at the top each time. I've NEVER had a problem speaking up, or working hard to keep up.

As a graduate of an all-boys Catholic school, I can honestly say that there are fewer "distractions" in a single sex environment. Discipline and focus are better when you are thinking about how to impress a certain person that you like.
However, if banning single-sex education was a way to effectively stop Islamic schools from popping up in the U.S., I would be all for it.
