TRIPOLI, Lebanon - The Lebanese army pounded a Palestinian refugee camp with artillery fire on Thursday, but the military denied reports that the action was part of a final assault on the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants barricaded inside.
The firing began just before dawn and hours after more than 150 civilians fled on foot from the camp in northern Lebanon, as soldiers ringing the neighborhood moved up tanks and armored vehicles.
The army said two soldiers were killed Thursday, bringing the number of military dead to 88 since fighting began at the Nahr el-Bared camp on May 20. Earlier an armored personnel carrier was seen ferrying at least two wounded soldiers out of the camp.
Between five and 10 shells were slamming into the camp every minute. Thick black smoke billowed from deep inside the seaside camp and covered a large area above it. Heavy machine gun fire could be heard.
In a statement denying reports that it had announced a final assault, the army said that "the ongoing military operations are still in the context of tightening the noose on the gunmen to force them to surrender."
The violence came on the anniversary of the start of Israel's war with Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon last summer. In an address to mark the occasion, Prime Minister Fuad Saniora late Wednesday called for "putting a final end" to the standoff at Nahr el-Bared.
The army build up came after a sniper inside Nahr el-Bared killed a soldier overnight and following repeated refusals by the al-Qaida-inspired group Fatah Islam to surrender.
Lebanese officials claimed victory June 21 after soldiers seized Fatah Islam positions on the camp's edges, but the militants retreated deeper into the warren of narrow lanes of densely packed buildings and continued to engage in daily fire fights.

Lebanon should have expelled the Palestinians, and Hellzbollah, a long time ago and they wouldn't be having to do this - or have had their country brought to its knees by these murdering thugs. Today (12th July) marks the first anniversary of the start of the war between Hizbollah and Israel - a war started by Hizbollah when they murdered and kidnapped several Israeli soldiers, then started firing rockets into Israel from civilian areas. Could anyone forget the Israeli response, then the Western response to the Israeli response - especially the response of the Western leftists, governments and media? Their total absence of concern for the lives of Israeli civilians and their show of solidarity with the viciously anti-semitic and anti-Western Hizbollah? Talk about making a pact with the Devil. And it really came to something when there was more criticism of Hizbollah from Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia than from the West.
This pact with the Devil was splashed all over our newspapers, uniting Leftist and Rightist hacks of the Guardian, Independent, Daily Mirror, Daily Express and Daily Mail, pouring scorn on Bush, Blair and Olmert - the first three because they disliked Blair over Iraq, the last two, well, because they dislike Blair, and screaming at Blair to stop the Israeli counterattack, but not to stop Hizbollah. Even so, that doesn't warrant plea-bargaining with terrorists. They showed themselves to be no different from Mosley's Blackshirts and lower than a slug's belly. The rest of the media was even worse - doctoring photographs, telling a pack of lies and falling for Hizbollah propaganda - how many times did we see Green Helmet Man parading around and showing off the disinterred corpses of children for Western cameramen to ogle over, as if it were a sporting trophy? And our so-called 'men of the cloth' were just as bad. But the wicked got what they wanted from a West that is easily duped because it chooses to be easily duped, and this is so because it chooses to be violently anti-semitic. The spirit of Nazism has been resurrected in 21st Century Europe, and has sadly been exported to the US.
Another aspect of this was the marches in dozens of Western cities. Tens of thousands of brain-dead Leftist and Islamist rabble-rousers carried banners showing solidarity with Hizbollah. Contrast this with the size of the rally in Glasgow last week, which had a few hundred attendees, with half of them carrying "Stop The War" placards - and half being non-Muslim. Of course, the Left pretend to be against racism and for civil liberties if their banners are to be believed but salivate over the worst racists and vilest regimes on the planet. What a depressing picture this creates of a Britain that seems to care more about the lives of Hizbollah terrorists than of London pubgoers and Glaswegian holidaymakers.
And today there is a different battle going on in Lebanon - between the Lebanese Army and terrorists in a refugee camp. The protestors, who only a year ago slandered Israel on our streets are strangely absent. There's no Green Helmet Man around today, nor a Red Cross ambulance in sight. No bellowing has been heard from the obnoxious Galloway and his ilk. Our press and media remain strangely silent. The so-called 'peace activists' have suddenly decided Lebanon isn't the place for them. What a stunning lack of morals from a bunch as deficient in guts as they are in ideals.
Spirit, the rockets into Israel is going on daily - even today. I get a newsletter from them and it has been going on since the 'end' of the Lebanon/Israeli war. And also from the Gaza it has been going on.
And silence from our media - even fox news. I do hear it on conservative radio and they sometimes have guest speakers on talking about the problems of islam/muslims in Lebanon, Gaza and elsewhere. If it is being mentioned on any mainstream media outlet, it is so minute of a news clip that it is missed. All the news outlets also fell into the muslim 'victim' whining even after the muslims were the ones who have endlessly murdered not only the lebanonese Christians, but also the israelis. They would use their dead as propaganda no matter what the real circumstances are - our medias believe their claims of 'victimhood'.
No one bothered to look at the Israeli hospital - and them taking in muslims to treat - and we all know what would have happened if a christian or a Jew went to a muslim hospital. We all know the muslim's hypocrit's oath since the London's attempted bombings.
