Pakistan eases curbs on A.Q. Khan

Not surprisingly, stories conflict on how free Khan now is, or has been.

By Munir Ahmad for the Associated Press:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Authorities have eased the virtual house arrest imposed on A.Q. Khan, the disgraced scientist who sold Pakistan's nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya, officials said Monday.
In what is believed to be his first public comment in about three years, Khan told The Associated Press that he was recovering from treatment for cancer, but declined to discuss other topics.
Khan, 71, the architect of Pakistan's nuclear program, confessed in 2004 to heading an international ring of smugglers that supplied sensitive technology to Iran and others.
President Gen. Pervez Musharraf pardoned him while confining him to his tightly guarded villa in the capital, Islamabad. He has been permitted few visitors.
However, two senior government officials told the AP that the restrictions were eased several months ago and that Khan could now meet friends and relatives either at his home or elsewhere in Pakistan.

Story #1:

"He is virtually a free citizen," said one of the officials, who is attached to the nuclear program.

Story #2:

However, the second official said Khan was only allowed to meet associates and relatives on a list approved by authorities, who would continue to provide him with a security detail that will restrict his movements.
Both asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of Khan's case.

Story #3:

Asked whether the government has relaxed restrictions on Khan, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said "there is no change in his status. He continues to lead a quiet life with his family."

Khan is still regarded as a national hero by many Pakistanis because of his role in developing the country's nuclear deterrent against its larger neighbor India.
Pakistan launched a formal investigation into Khan's dealings in 2003 after the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, wrote a letter to Pakistan saying that Khan was operating a black market in weapons technology and know- how.
Pakistan's government maintains it was not aware of his dealings, but has repeatedly refused to allow the IAEA to question him.
Several U.S. lawmakers warned last week that Khan's network could still be in business and pressed for Pakistan to provide more information.
However, Pakistan says it has shared the findings of its own probe and the Bush administration has repeatedly praised Islamabad for its help in preventing further nuclear proliferation.
One of the officials who spoke Monday said no country had asked to "directly interrogate" Khan and reiterated that the investigation was over.

Khan the criminal should be quietly whisked away in the night. I'm not saying by who. I'm just saying.

*Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.*

Satellite photos of Pakistan's Khushab nuclear site show what appears to be a partially completed heavy-water reactor capable of producing enough plutonium for 40 to 50 nuclear weapons a year, a 20-fold increase from Pakistan's current capabilities, according to a technical assessment by Washington-based nuclear experts.

This guys a national hero to Pakistanis, whatever they did to him was purely to appease the west for a short while.

This is why adherents of islam should be refused a western education. The qur'an has all the knowledge they need.

Well good, le the progress continue. And while you are at it, get rid of Musharaf.

Islamic Progress = More Murder & More Mahem

The media, the Pakistanis and the Bush administration keep telling the big lie: that there existed, or ever existed, an "A.Q. Khan network". That would be the "Pakistani network"! There is NO WAY this man's proliferation activities were unknown to the Pakistani government. What are we, idiots, like our president? This is a convenient lie to preserve the US-Pakistani relationship and prevent tension between the US and a nuclear-armed Islamic state. An honest appraisal of the situation yields the Bush administration's desire to have Pakistani acquiescence to American bases and the Afghan government we have set up. Of course if we confronted Pakistan head-on, we would be in a new cold war and they would line up PUBLICLY with our enemies like Iran and the Taliban, rather than in secret.

With the logic of the West, Albert Enstein's arrest while developing the most lethal weapons would have been rghtly justified.

Whisked away or dead, the infidel world cannot afford for this infidelphobe to be alive. In our life time I suspect he will be responsible for hundreds of thousands of infidel deaths.

With the logic of the Muhammadan, A.Q. Khan would have been given the title Sheikh or Emir or made head of the new Caliphate.

Possible Explosive Device found at Disney World.

progressive -- is it true that you can save me money on my auto insurance?

'Possible Explosive Device found at Disney World.'

Has Farfur mislaid his vest?

fine, progressive...we'll whisk musharaf out in the middle of the night, then have a handful of those inventions (of which khan stole the blueprints) make a visit to "good ol'" pak.

btw - do you know anything? just curious...

Is it finaly time to start work towards breaking pakiland up into its individual parts, i.e. PoK, Sindh, Balochistan? As an aside, I've heard at other threads that the Waziristan tribal areas have essentially been granted independence; the pakis apparently can't control the region where the taliban and similar jihadis are essentially control, which incidentally is the smallest region, yet they can make sure Balochistan, Sindh and PoK, where natives are most likely to be opposed to Taliban and other islamists, are viciously subjected to their jihad loving military rule. The list of reasons to treat pakis like the Sudan and Iran goes on and on.

ANd what's the deal with paks and nuclear power? I would imagine A.Q. Khan is the reason why the Iran lunatic is getting the nuclear capacity to obliterate Isreal and American cities. Anyone have any possible info that would serve as evidence of A.Q Khan getting nuclear power ot Iran? It would be doubtful, but that could be a reason for even our most clueless politicians to designate the paks as part of an "axis of evil".

Re: Smoking ‘crude pipe bomb’ found concealed in Downtown Disney.

Dismissed in a short release on the Disney website as not terror related. Talk about burying a story before the 4th of July weekend.

Crude smoking bomb in London causes uproar in constant 24-hr news cycle. Crude smoking bomb at Disney is ignored. Disney is in the club of big media. Lots on money over the holiday. Makes one wonder.

progressive- I heard Gieco's rates were better.

(And Einstein had nothing to do with the development of the A-Bomb; it was mostly Jewish scientists in exile, having fled from the terroristic Nazis. The same Nazis, who, in their Hitlerian brilliance, decided that "Jewish science" was inferior to "Aryan science"... big mistake. A.Q. Khan did no real work on nuclear physics, but merely stole Western atomic secrets that the Dutch were too naive to guard properly. He is more like the Nazis' A-bomb science workers, in murderous intent, and the Allies were ready to capture or assassinate any of the Germans, like Heisenberg, etc., if they appeared to be getting too close to achieving a Nazi bomb. Which is what should have happened to Khan years ago, since his "religion", Islam, has no moral restraints when it comes to targeting infidels. Or even their own Muslim brethren. SEE: Baghdad, Beirut, Belsan, Bali, Madrid, London, NYC, ad nauseam...)

It is known that Khan sold nuclear secrets to North Korea, Iran, and Libya. Khadafy/Gaddafi (however it's spelled) of Libya says he's given up the quest for nukes; personally, I would never believe any Muslim leader who said he was going to pass up developing / stealing / buying some bigger, better weapon...

But Pakistan's "the bomb" is one reason the USA keeps giving aid to Musharraf - when he goes, that nuclear know-how belongs to jihadists. Comforting idea, eh?

profitsbeard, you're funny! it took you 50 words (i'm eye-ballin' it mind you) to say to 'progressive' what took me only 4 in the form of a question.

but then i'm sure 'progressive' didn't get it anyway.

Reminder: on September 10, 2001, Pakistan has almost zero Reserve currency, and was suffering under a US embargo. Major separatist movements were operating in Waziristan, Sindh, and Balochistan. Jamaat-i-Islami clergy were under intense arrest pressure. Yet polls revealed 90% support for Taliban/al-Qaeda.

Currently, trickle down wealth has put cell phones in the hands of Waziri peasants. Pakistanian products flow into America, along with Paki immigrants. Over 350,000 Kashmir Hindus have been exiled from lands where they have roots dating thousands of years. US troops are being murdered in Afghanistan, by Pakistan based terrorists. Afghanistan's joke President is lecturing against US bombings in the Heroin (Helmund) district. The ISNA - US puppets of a Paki group that invited Osama bin Laden to attend their 1998 convention in Peshawar - continues to receive State Department funding for counsel on "islamic affairs."

What happened? Bush decided to transfer billions in US wealth to America's mortal enemy, under the cover of benign-Islam. If Bush had allied with Afghanistan's Northern Alliance and carpet bombed Pashtos, then the heroin flow would has been cut, and the Pak terrorist entity would be in extreme danger of breakup.

Bush united Wahabis and Khomenis at the Islamic Center, after decades of conflict and legal fights:

progressive is a knee-jerk au contrarian.

(Or, as Groucho Marx sang: "Whatever it is, I'm against it!"... as long as that "whatever" is FOR the defense of Western culture, expanding liberties, an equalitarian Civilization, free scientific and philosophic and artistic inquiry, the skeptical examination of all theocratic claims, and basic human rights that include women's dignity.)

Mohammad's example is one of the worst in history.

...It is still interesting to note that many terrorists travel to and from Pakistan, They are trained in Pakistan, they receive instructions from Pakistan, and they are paid by Pakistanis, we find weapons being shipped to terrorists in the Middle East by Pakistan, and now the Pakistanis seem to be releasing known traitors and terrorists from prison or house arrest...hmmmm this dot goes here, this dot goes here, this dot goes here....connecting the dots gets easier all the time....Islam is for losers...
