A New York Post editorial (thanks to WriterMom) skewers the Bush Administration's fantasy-based policymaking regarding Fatah:
July 17, 2007 -- Yet again, the United States, Western Europe and Israel are putting all their diplomatic eggs in the basket of a Palestinian leadership they consider moderate, in a bid to move the Middle East peace process forward. But is there any reason to believe Mahmoud Abbas can succeed - or that he even wants to?
President Bush yesterday laid out a series of incentives aimed at propping up Abbas' Fatah-led government, which last month lost control of Gaza to the terrorists of Hamas in a violent confrontation.
Bush's goodies include $190 million in direct U.S. assistance, $228 million in loans and $80 million in U.S. aid to bolster the Palestinian security services.
He also announced a summit conference this fall among supporters of a two-state solution, bolstered the idea of an eventual Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and called on world leaders to "provide decisive support for Palestinian leaders working for peace."
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert joined in, announcing the release of Palestinian prisoners, agreeing to stop hunting down 200 Abbas-affiliated terrorists and allowing the mastermind of the 1974 Ma'alot school massacre to attend a key political meeting in the West Bank.
It's a dramatic show of support - but can Abbas deliver? Or are the U.S. and Israel - under international pressure to jump-start the diplomatic stalemate, and fearful of further Hamas gains in the Palestinian-controlled territories - propping up a paper tiger?
Read it all.
This is a pipe dream. A crack pipe dream that is.
Nothing else can explain this insanity. The infidel world is run by a crackocracy because what it does must be caused by the influence of drugs-how else can the constant defiance of common sense be explained?
With all the billions in "aid" that have been dumped down the sewer known as the Palestinian Authority, how can anyone claim poverty made me do it when it comes to their suicide bombers? Bush and his supporters at State and the NSC should open up their own wallets and write checks - not use my money as a taxpayer. No one asked me about giving money to these losers. Even better, Bush can invite some of these beloved, peaceful "Palestinians" to his ranch and have some BBQ.....
You are so right, IFL. Hamas, al-qaeda, fatah, they are all the same: varying shades of terrorism. I must say I preferred our leader's posture last year during the summer of love: Israel killing their enemies and the US looking the other way.
Red Mosque, Lebanon, whatever--when muslims kill muslims, stand back and watch. They've been doing this since the 600s A.D.
Millions of $$ wasted on funding these slimy bastards' terrorist state.
Bush's goodies include $190 million in direct U.S. assistance, $228 million in loans and $80 million in U.S. aid to bolster the Palestinian security services.
What's the difference between "direct U.S. Assistance" and "U.S. Aide"?
And how are they going to pay back a $228 Million loan? They have no industry, no exports, no GDP, how is a "country" with no income (other than jizya) expected to pay back a loan? Oh wait, this is just a way for a future administration to help the poor pleostinians by "forgiving" $228 million in loans.
This administration gets dumber by the day. Makes me ashamed to admit that I voted for this idiot twice. Then again, the lessor of two evils.
Never have so few done so little to deserve so much as the palestinians. 5000 years from now people will wonder in utter amazement what the hell was the mentality of the West regarding this bunch-assuming the world overcomes the scourge of Islamania that is.
It's a dramatic show of support - but can Abbas deliver?
And just exactly what is it that Abbas is supposed to 'deliver'? A stable PA, will never happen because you have muslim unstables running things. After 1400 years of screwing up, Bush thinks throwing money at violent thieves will fix things. Israel, who should know better, has a looney like Bush in charge, which is highly unfortunate, he wants to back Fatah as well...I still think I hear Abu Mazen's escape heliocopter warming up.
According to my MSNBC, Bush wants to make a Palestinian-Israeli settlement his 'legacy' before he rides off into the sunset. Clinton had the same dream and lived to regret it. Its is absolutely and utterly impossible because even if they bribed and cajoled and strong armed enough signatures and cobbled together a West Bank coalition of some absurd and tenuous form, the 'pure' terrorist element which is too large to ever be controlled again will sabotage it with ease.
Our President and his advisors and his inner circle are truly and certifiably insane.
All this nonsense is in addition to the $500 million or so that the West send to the Palestinians through UNRWA every year. The UN Relief Works Agency funds food, schools, medicine, and housing for the people who have brought the world talking Jihadi mice and Jihadi bees.

I’m becoming convinced that the President is desperately flailing, trying to delay the inevitable, so that the Great War will begin on his successor’s watch. But all the extra money will end up doing is to more closely associate Abbas with the US, accelerating the Hamas takeover. Hamas will end up with more guns and ammunition when they eventually shoot the last five Fatah hold-outs in the street.
You see, Hamas is on a mission from God.
Oh how Americans must love their tax dollars being directly funnelled to terrorists ¬_¬ I am surprised such practices are even allowed to happen.
Arafat the Fatah died of aids in Paris.
(why is Europe the incubator of these lethal paradigms like Khomenei ?)
Israel is unfortunately in grave danger under its current "leadership".
I am curiously reminded of "Weekend at Bernies", when speaking of the propping-up of Fatah.
Come on, our guys can't really believe this crap about Palestinian leadership, cooperation, government-building, working for peace. They're just arming and financing Fatah so we can watch a replay of "see the Paleo-loco's slaughter each other again". If we do this enough times, maybe the Paleo-lemmings will wind up killing each other all off.
If I knew it would mean arming them would end up both terrorist groups killing each other off, I'd be all for it...
...problem is, "the enemy of my enemy" syndrome still persists within both terrorist groups, and they're playing the proverbial fiddle of politicians...
...even worse, if we don't do it, the EU will, anyway, so it's past discussion, even though it's BS.
Abbas is pulling the age-old tactic his aids-infested predecessor terrorist arafat pulled in the early 80s when Israeli troops had him cornered and his balls in a vise...feign befriending Israel until they can regroup...if the tables were turned and hamas was on the outs, abbas wouldn't be nearly as frantically friendly to Israel...or the US...and we all know it.
If I knew how to hijack this cash transfer en route, I'd consider it my patriot duty.
And substitute Monopoly money, since Islam is the Ultimate Monopoly.
Hmmm...just thought of something...I know how I'd want to "prop" them up...same way the greeks & romans did...vertically, at the end of a pike pole, impaled. It proved rather effective then, too.
Just a thought...
What this otherwise fine editorial fails to point out is that Mahmoud Abbas is a Jihadist killer and his Fatah party is a Muslim terrorist organization.
In other words, Bush is with the terrorists!
At some point in time, the PC politicians will wake up and realize that this is all a waste of time and that all out war is unavoidable.
At the risk of getting flamed, I propose that you may want to consider that, of all the candidates, only two will have the balls (or other organs) to call the war against Islam what it is: Thompson and Clinton. Yes, I wrote Clinton. Don't underestimate her ability and determination to support Israel.
Since middle east violence is almost always connected to US presidential election cycles, expect a whole heck of a lot of fun in the late summer of 2008.

"While visions of mushroom-clouds danced in their heads"
Bush’s end game, his last ditch effort for a legacy? Trade Israel’s land for recognition of Israel by Arabs. Ally US, Israel, and “moderate” Arab nations. Confront Iran, possibly militarily. Peace for region. Peace for Israel. Take photo. Pick up Peace Prize. Intoxicating thought. Hangover coming.
Though it has an obvious religious angle and the writer is disillusioned with the Bush Administration, there’s actually a pretty good piece on this at: http://www.heartsoulandstrength.org/Learning/NewsComment/tabid/55/mid/500/newsid500/56/Default.aspx
Oh, God, save me from this madness. I'm so sick of people blaming GW for EVERYTHING.If this one man could do as much as people accuse him of he would be God Himself on earth. Oh, that's right; that was Jesus. Please people, I don't think that GW ever wanted to do anything but help the world come to a peacable living situation. And he wasn't the one who invented a seperate palestinian state. Hmmm... I seem to remember the Oslo Accords. I hope his legacy ends up like Truman's, a true American patriot. So, quit your whining and get yourselves ready for the real battle against islamic jihad. It IS coming to a theatre near you.
