From Fox News: Sept. 11 Security Bill to Include Protections for Citizens Who Report Suspicious Activity
After nearly a week of intense, behind-the-scenes wrangling, congressional negotiators late Tuesday agreed to include in the pending Sept. 11 security bill sweeping liability protections for citizens who report suspicious activity they fear might be linked to terrorism.
The provision is meant to address the so-called "Flying Imams" case, wherein six Muslim clerics sued passengers aboard a Northwest flight in March who reported them to authorities, leading to their detention. The clerics were cleared but their lawsuit, many lawmakers feared, would discourage future vigilance among the flying public.
Soon you need not fear reporting suspicious cheese.
JUST CURIOUS: COULD TSA AGENTS BE SUED FOR REPORTING SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOR?
Think about it, and see how absurd it is for the Democrats to challenge the John Doe provision that was introduced by Rep.Peter King to Rail Bill HR 1401.
Imagine if that store clerk had not reported what he saw on that video that led to the arrest of the Fort Dix 6. The eyes, and ears of the American people are our most important defense against terrorism---bar none!!!!
I am reporting anything suspicious, and if anything happens that is caused by the people I report, I am sueing the government...
Does this mean we wont be screwed by our ruling classes like the Brits have been ?
We seem to have to watch out for some beltway whores as much as we watch for islamic terrorists.
Good news, for a change.
I'd love to know if the phones lit up over this enough to make a difference as with shamnesty? Power to the People, Bro'!
This is good. I wonder what the laws say about this type of thing in Canada.
I noticed in the Flying Imams complaint there was something about an elderly couple who had the nerve to turn and look at the imams and then use their cell phone. The horror! Someone, quick, protect those big girly-men from the evils of staring!
Was it in Great Britain that some government document stated that staring at a person could be Islamophobia?
Thank goodness for the internet. I really admire Americans for sticking up for their rights.
Good news, however, notice the difficulty getting this simple provision through? And now that it is, what changes? From what I read the only people that are secure at the airport are average Americans, we are searched, given lists of nonos when traveling, among other things. It is assured that no average American will be able to get away with any terrorism, what a relief. So now we don’t have to worry about being sued, great, but the inept people we report to have not changed.
“The provision is meant to address the so-called "Flying Imams" case, wherein six Muslim clerics sued passengers aboard a Northwest flight in March who reported them to authorities, leading to their detention. The clerics were cleared but their lawsuit, many lawmakers feared, would discourage future vigilance among the flying public.” from above. As you can see nothing has changed, these men were reported for suspicious behavior, yet the article says they were cleared. Cleared of what, suspicious behavior? If you are reported for displaying suspicious behavior there is no clearing or not clearing if you don’t display it then you don’t get reported period. My confidence in the authorities is at an all time low, I rarely hear the truth, I see bills like this attacked, I know the airports are unsecured, they are briefing/giving tours of our security apparatus to potential islamists. I realize that we have sacrificed rights and freedoms and received nothing in return and still the authorities are ignorant to the true nature of the threat. The authorities stopped nothing on 9-11 but the average American did, look for more of the same to occur if the islamists attempt anything. That is where I will put my confidence, in the average American. If I see something I’m not reporting it I’m confronting it. What the heck do you think you are doing? You better knock it off you are frightening some passengers and you are pissing me off so sit in your fricken seat behave yourself and don’t get up until we land. All said in an unwavering yet calm cool and collected manner, I dont care if they hurl racial epithets like islamophobe at me. Thats right racial epithets, muslims say they are a race, ok, but I say non muslims are a race as well. Confrontation and exposure is the safest alternative imho but look out they are sure to be humiliated as a result of your behavior and might self destruct right there, we all know how sensitive they are. Of course they could wind up in the fetal position, mumbling and doing some weird stuff on the deck provoking our disgust as well.
I will report anything and everything. I'm watching all the time and I don't pretend I'm not watching. I make it obvious and I shake my damned head sometimes.
If I'm ever in a 'flying imams' incident I'll welcome the threat of a lawsuit. That would be a challenge that would invigorate me, not intimidate me.
I'm not islamophobic. I'm rational and have calculated the probabilities based on available information. That's not irrational nor fearful.
I am not afraid nor inimidated. Bring it on mo-foes. Really. Do something that will make a difference if you have the skills and organization. Otherwise sit down and STFU.

"nearly a week of intense, behind-the-scenes wrangling"
this is very good news, but i find it utterly incomprehensible that anyone, other than a Jihadi, wanted to argue against the need for "John Doe" protection. we got to where we are today because people who saw things which seemed odd did not report them because they did not know that those odd things had sinister associations. now we all know, and yet there are elected representatives who want to negate the advantages of that knowledge by fear of prosecution. i am just dumbfounded by that.
in a recent episode of "Dr Who", a character said that she wanted a Democrat for President "because they are so funny". if only that were true....
poetcomic1 - good ideas
I'll check it out.
This bill smells worse than limburger cheese.
