ISLAMABAD : A suicide bomber blew himself up on Tuesday at a rally where hundreds had gathered to hear Pakistan's suspended top judge speak, killing 15 people and plunging the country further into crisis.The attack in Islamabad ramped up the pressure on President Pervez Musharraf on two fronts - his suspension of chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and a wave of violence that has followed the storming of the radical Red Mosque.
The powerful blast splattered human remains outside a marquee decorated with balloons ahead of the rally in support of Chaudhry, who was not present at the time. He arrived later and joined lawyers in prayer for the victims.
Hospital officials said 15 people were killed in the bombing, including two women, and 43 injured, five of them police. Many of the injured had their clothes ripped off by the explosion and suffered horrific burns.
"I saw with my own eyes bodies being ripped apart and hands and arms flying through the air," Shafqat Hayat, chief legal advisor to cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, told AFP at the scene.
OK. Let's see if I have this straight. To protest Musharraf's actions over the Red Mosque, a suicide bomber attacked an anti-government rally.
This must be Islamic logic.

We need greater exchange programs that bring people here so they can learn what life in a democracy is all about.
We need to bring people out of the tribal areas and into the US. They have been abandoned by the middle class (surprise, surprise) in the past several years and they had no choice(!) but to join up with the terrorists who brought money and aid to their areas. It's up to America to start a campaign to develop and bring prosperity to the tribal areas. All of this would stop the violence in Pakistan.
Didn't previous "exchanges" bring us students who set about killing us? Wasn't Qutb offended at the sight of liquor stores in American cities and fearful that Muslims would be seduced by them? Liberty and prosperity is not what they seek. When will our leaders get this through their heads?
Let's hope no Korans were desecrated or splashed with blood and body parts -- wouldn't wanna see round the world riots throughout the Muslim world for "Koran desecration", now would we...

Not really. Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry gave rulings critical of the Musharraf government, there is an article today’s Wall Street Journal about two of his ACLU-type supporters.
This bombing looks to be the Jihadis targeting the liberals. Musharraf is on the sidelines.
The exact charges against the chief justice have not been made public, but there are allegations of misconduct and misuse of authority.

Thats what I'm afraid of, not so much Iran getting nukes in the future but Pakistan already sitting on many nukes. And when Musharif loses control, who do you think will control those nukes?

Most of what was in my post I heard just this morning from someone from the Nixon Center who thinks we need more exchanges with the Muslim world and who thinks we are fighting the war on terror all wrong.
He actually said the US should take it upon itself to rebuild the tribal areas and (I'm paraphrasing) give the people who live there a reason to choose modernity over terrorism. He wants the US to rebuild Pakistan.
